eBay and Etsy Acknowledge They Need More Shoppers

By: Ina Steiner

If you listen to eBay and Etsy management teams, you'll discover they are starting to sound alike in many ways, including talk of structured data and expanding promoted listings for sellers.

But both companies also acknowledge the crucial need to attract more shoppers to come to their respective sites, and they pledge to do more brand marketing to drum up traffic and sales.

One has to wonder how much Amazon is a factor, as shoppers increasingly turn to Amazon first.

eBay had focused much of its marketing on social networking sites in recent years - but now it's turning to sporting event sponsorships and outdoor advertising in urban areas.

eBay shared its new ad campaign on the eBay for Business Facebook page:

"Remember when we said we'd be investing in advertising that encourages buyers to shop FIRST on eBay? Here's one of the many ads to support that effort and help you sell MORE. A version of this just went live in Times Square!"

Meanwhile Etsy told analysts yesterday it's focused on driving sales for Etsy's community of sellers - by bringing new buyers to Etsy and by encouraging existing buyers to make more frequent purchases.

"To do this, our market strategy includes: first, raising brand awareness of Etsy.com as an everyday shopping destination. Second, making enhancements that encourage purchase frequency, and finally connecting sellers and buyers locally as we continue to scale globally."

Last year it ran a "Difference Makes Us" campaign, and it appears Etsy will expand on that again this year.

How would you like to see eBay and Etsy advertise in order to bring shoppers to the site? What message would attract the attention of shoppers, and where would you advertise?

I used to have a lot of Buyers, but eBay drove them all away.

Are they going to get them back?  With advertising?

Right!  Sure!

More appropriate would be an apology...

Can't speak as to Etsy, but will as to eBay....

eBay subliminally alienate buyers due to the fact that sellers must constantly raise prices to cover annual shipping increases as well as eBay's constant fee increases.  Add the fact that eBay recently cut the eBay Bucks buyer rewards by a staggering 50% and you can see the reason eBay can't retain buyers.

eBay is simply run so poorly that they fail to see the direct correlation between forcing sellers to raise prices and buyer alienation.

Let's also not forget the fact that with every fee increase, eBay alienates more and more sellers who then tell others about how eBay drove them from the marketplace.  Over the years, this negativity has been responsible for eBay's inability to grow sales at double digit rates the way Amazon and other ecommerce platforms do.

So, eBay will begin to advertise again, and the cost of that advertising will lead to additional fee increases and the cycle will continue.

eBay creates it's own problems and is their own worst enemy. Worse still is the fact their extremely over compensated executives can't or refuse to see the problem for what it is.

They could advertise all they want but they will get no where until they respect their sellers.

EBay needs to stop trying to be Amazon. When I need to buy new merchandise or books I check the prices on Amazon and eBay. Amazon is almost always cheaper, because eBay sellers get to (often) list for free and keep on relisting.  There is no incentive to keep their prices competitive, they can just keep relisting for free. Buyers of antiques and vintage collectibles are quitting eBay because the policy of nearly unlimited free relists has swamped eBay with so much stale, overpriced, or just plain boring items, that it's not worth the effort to find a desirable item among the hundreds of items that are relisted every week and never sell. The free listings enable the sellers to stick to their unrealistic pricing while cluttering the search results of the buyers and making the buyers’ searching experience miserable. We buyers have repeatedly begged eBay for an optional filter to keep the relists out of our search results. EBay is not interested in fixing this problem and they see new merchandise as their future. EBay should stick with used merchandise. It's a bigger and less competitive market.

Sure, duh... it's ebay's only purpose to get buyers to the sellers and, sure, buyers are spreading out not just to Amazon but to everywhere.

But I will also put some blame on sellers who seem to demand top dollar on used items moreso than in the past making bargains a 'not so much' thing anymore.

It's like any closed system - it seeks equilibrium... somebody's got to poke a hole in it.

Soooo----FleeBay  treats  it's  sellers  like crap  and  demands  that we  pay homage  to  them?  I  don't  think  so!

This  rubs  off  on  buyers--who  are  often  selling ON  FleeBay---and  makes  the  market-place  hostile  and  inhospitable  for  BOTH  buyers  and sellers.  Lack of  support;  the ability  of  buyers  to scam  sellers  with ZERO  support  from  FleeeceBay--this creates  a  huge  problem  that FleeceBay REFUSES  to  address.  -

I  sell  on  ebay  but I  find myself  buying  elsewhere;  I  do  still LOOK  on ebay for what I  need  but--first  off  if  I  don;t SELL  anything I  can't BUY;  I  see  my items hidden---is  it possible  that  popular  items  like Ralph Lauren get ZERO  looks  or watches--week  after  week?  How  do  you get  them SEEN?  Why  does  there  seem to be a flurry   of  sales AFTER  I  buy  something?  Do  I  have to  keep  buying  there  to SELL  there?  What if  I  don't  need  anything--or  I  need  the  money  for  stuff  I  can't  buy  on ebay?

Some days  I  just  wanna pick  ebay  up  by  the scruff  of  the neck  and  shake  it.

I am getting action on eBay, and adding more listings.  Amazon's "race to the bottom" has led me to drop some products, particularly on FBA.  Also don't neglect your own store!

Most of the buyers I know in my category have left eBay due to the free shipping fiasco that eBay pushed on sellers. In the past, buyers would purposely buy multiple individual items from the same seller to combine shipping to save money and make the transactions worthwhile. Now sellers have raised their prices on those same individual prices to include the "free shipping" on every individual item. Thus raising the prices to unrealistic levels, somethings triple the original price or more. Then sellers started combining items into groups to combat that "free shipping" effect but then those groups are typically of little interest when you only need 1 or 2 items from the group. So sales are non-existent in my category on eBay. Where there used to be 2,000 to 4,000 individual items listed previously there are now around 500 items and of those, only 30-50 are new auctions while all the rest of relists that have been sitting for months with zero interest and no sales.

Compare that with Delcampe where things are like eBay used to be, where sellers can manage their own sales however they want. Delcampe only takes around 5.5% and that doesn't include shipping. Plus sellers can add their payment fees (i.e. PayPal, Skrill, etc.) to the invoice if they want. Plus almost every seller in my category there lists all their items individually so you can pick and choose what you want, combine shipping, etc. just like the old days on eBay.

And guess what, I've made more sales in my category on Delcampe in the last month or so than what had taken me years on eBay, even in the good days. I've even listed some test sales on eBay a few times over the past year and had ZERO sales while I had over 500 sales on Delcampe around the same times.

Everyone I know goes to Amazon first for NEW items and Delcampe for collectibles. Most people don't even bother looking at eBay at all anymore.

And I forgot to mention.. where eBay only has around 500 items in my category Delcampe currently has over 10,000 listings!!! So guess where I do most of my buying and selling these days.

Ebay is so completely out of touch. They keep hiring inexperience and keep digging deeper and deeper to the point of no return.

I am just floored that DW came in on the coat tails of JD's epic failure and is following right in his footsteps!

Please stop with the "sellers spoke and we listened" crap about supposed BS value.

EVERYONE that raised their hand and said "I" when they asked about 3rd party ads should have been fired outright. Not sure why they are acting like they have a good idea to stop now. Lets see....Do we want to use the ad space to send buyers AWAY from ebay where the very same products are sold......or do we want to promote the ones on ebay so we can see the ad space and collect FVF? ROCKET SCIENCE WINS!

Raising fees means higher prices and less customers. Instead of raising fees invest in getting more customers.

Now that you just screwed your best sellers who just got screwed by paypal merchant rate elimination and postal rate hikes definitely now is a great time to rub that salt in the wound. The only problems geniuses that sure you may report an extra 1% growth but it is going to make no difference and sales will still be flat. Because yes you do need more buyers. You get more buyers in 2 ways. One apologize for the 10's of thousands of people JD displaced for no reason, Make selling affordable again.

Ebay if you are reading this I swear it is the truth. I used to buy stock for my business sourcing over 75% on ebay. Finding decent prices was on a downhill slope since 2008 but things didn't get epic bad until the massive fee hikes for non stores and defect policies rolled out. Even though some was walked back the damage was done. That decimated the site and as a result I am now buying less then 5% on there and using 3rd party auction companies like live auction group and auctionzip to source the rest. You lost thousands in fees from just me alone.

Also Mr. Wenig how does it not completely burn your biscuit that every time I buyer a retail type product it is dropshipped from amazon or walmart/samsclub? Can you guess why ebay is no longer my first choice for those items anymore?

Etsy doesn't really advertise. They rely on its sellers to bring in buyers to save money.  There are still many people who have never heard of Etsy.  Until their name is as recognizable as Amazon and Ebay they can forget getting enough buyers to their site to enhance their bottom line, not their sellers.  They could care less about them.

Ebay has for many years, never seemed to know what buyers wanted. At one point they decided to allow store items to be seen in the regular search. At that point store items weren't part of the regular search so they did this experiment and let stores be in search like everything else. In those 6 weeks I made more money on ebay than I had ever done before or after on any other venue. Every one I communicated with that had stores were reporting the same thing - phenomenal sales. Then Meg Wittman in her 'wisdom' yanked the rug out from under us and store listings were pulled out from search and our sales plummeted. Her excuse? Research showed that buyers didn't like store's being in search!!! Whose research? Surely not from buyers who were finding what they wanted and needed and surely not sellers who were selling non-stop. It was the beginning of the end for ebay and it's nonsense of tricking searches to do what they, the BOD, wanted and not what buyers wanted. They want buyers, go back to about 12-13 years to how ebay was set up then and toss all the stupid rules and fees and see what happens. It is probably too late and those that think they know what the company needs will never admit they don't have the foggiest clue on how to run a company that 20 years before hadn't existed and so no MBA textbook even covered the topic. Once Pierre wasn't in charge these folks kept coming in and trying to run ebay like it was some blue chip company, and paying it's CEO as if it were, even while that highly overpaid CEO destroyed their company through total and complete lack of knowledge of this new form of running a business. Remember when ebay first started, people paid each other directly and were on the honor system. The more ebay interfered the worse the company got, till know it needs buyers.

Ebay needs to get out of it's own way. But it won't. I don't feel in the least sorry for the business entity that is ebay although I do feel sorry for the sellers that use that venue.

If they want more shoppers, get the "Hairballs" out of feedback. I just had some ahole out of Brooklyn praise my product to the heavens, used the word "Perfect", then leave me 4 out of 5 stars.
ALSO : I sell a product that sells itself. I do very well. But I see other people selling crap. Nobody Needs a stuffed item. It's just all crap that will not appreciate in value, and will see the dumpster in just a few years. My product DOES appreciate in value.
A more focused innovation is require to capture the money from the wallets.
"Public" government School tamps down imagination and innovation. Now you're seeing the results.

EB & Etsy have to figure out how to be the "go-to" sites again.  AMZ has such a varied product(s) that they are first on everyone's minds when it comes to streaming services, mobile devices, books, you name it.

EB should figure out what to do with Half.com for sure.  It also has Ebayclassifieds and it sits dormant.

The first thing people should think about when they want to buy is Ebay.  Maybe it should convert back to strictly auctions?

In the race to the bottom. Ebay will buy Etsy and just spit it out like the other venues they have bought.

Ebay doesn't have a shred of a thought process. All they do is follow.

In a few years they will be swallow up by the likes of Alibaba and spit out just like they have done to others.

People do not shop on EBay because of the scams and fraud that Ebay has allowed to flourish in that marketplace. Buyers do not trust the marketplace. They have lost their identity chasing greed and corruption. They had a unique market place but wanted to convert it to a high end  designer retail market. In the process they allowed  cheap China imports  with designer names attached to take over. At the same time they were crippling loyal sellers with constantly changing policies.  They ruined the auction business because of the shill bidding they allowed  on the site that ripped customers off. A market place cannot be everything to every customer. Buyers Trust Amazon more. Plain & simple !

Etsy's so called advertising was all internal, including their 'Differences Make Us' campaign which ran on the site's front page, and was a colossal fail due to the disorganized incomprehensible video, which featured  klutzy people ''falling'' to the floor, and one reaching into a drawer of prophylactics.

No one could figure out what the 'message' was, much less attract anyone to the site -- and only served to offend and further alienate its base.

With Etsy's focus on ''seller services'' and manipulated non-working search, it no longer needs to attract outsiders -- it already has its own built-in cash cow, in the way of duped sellers/shop owners that it continues to string along.

eBay used to have a lot of buyers, but they were also sellers. They were making money back then, before all of the punitive rules, hidden listings, and blatant big enterprise favortism, and as a result they were buying on eBay.  eBay ran them off by the many thousands. Those many thousands told friends, relatives and anyone who would listen of their bad experience, advising them not to shop on ebay.

eBay continue to court the "casual, clean out your closet seller", while continuing to mistreat the "loyal" sellers that they have, and have had for years. Loyalty means nothing in eBayland.

Many of us have been saying this for years. Nothing is going to change. In fact, things are worse under current management than they were under Donahoe (who could have imagined). Most people only bring it up again to vent.
