Etsy Removes a Crucial Feature with Latest Upgrades
By: Ina Steiner
Etsy announced improved seller tools
with great fanfare on Valentines Day, but a week later, sellers are struggling with some of the changes as they are rolled out.
While Etsy made improvements to its variation feature within listings, it took away a feature that is crucial to many of its sellers: no more bulk-editing of variations across multiple listings. The missing functionality is costing sellers time and frustration. A seller explained
on this thread how the change impacted her:
The seller has 200 types of bags, and each bag has its own variations. So if she adds a new color to her product line, she must go into each of the 200 listings for those bags and individually add the new color as a variation. Sellers also discussed the problem they're facing on this thread
Etsy has responded to complaints by pointing out that with the new tools it has now made available to sellers, they can add category specific attributes to listings, which will help buyers more easily navigate search, and increase the scan-ability of the sellers' listing page.
But it's surprising it would roll out the new tools before making a bulk-edit feature available.
In response to one seller's concerns about variations, an Etsy moderator further explained
that because of the increased specificity in listings, "the old bulk edit tools are not compatible with our new inventory management and attribute tools. Attempting to make bulk changes to categories or mass edit variations creates a risk that sellers accidentally delete data from listings. We'll be monitoring the feedback on this matter to ensure we come up with ways to ease the listing process for sellers in the future."
Etsy also said "bulk editing functionality is definitely something we're thinking about," and said that Etsy was working on a tool to help sellers add attributes to their listings more quickly. The full response can be found here
More changes are ahead - Etsy is rolling out a tool that will help sellers quickly add attributes. And a new Shop Manager remains optional for sellers, but at some point, it will become mandatory.
As the Etsy changes roll out, let us know what you're seeing - the great, the good, and the not so good.
