Some Say New eBay Search Feature 'Needs Changing'

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

An eBay seller noticed a new feature on search results pages that they aren't too pleased about: a link to other "new & refurbished" listings. The seller included a screenshot they took of a search results page showing Pampers diapers with "26 New & refurbished from $8.95" prominently displayed under the first result.

The seller wrote in part: "...first they have placed a link under all of our listings in the search results that links to other sellers products..and some sellers like myself that have new items listed are being told the items have been refurbished,..." Sellers discussed the feature on this thread.

We were curious what happens when shoppers click on the link - we tried the search and found similar search results with the feature (it's not clear how long it's been there and whether it's a test that only some shoppers are seeing). We clicked on the link to "new & refurbs" for one of the listings and we were taken to a Product Page - with no refurbished items in sight. Instead, it prominently featured a Buy Box for a single seller eBay had chosen to feature.

(We blogged about eBay's Buy Box feature in the July 26th EcommerceBytes Blog, again on July 30th, and published a screenshot in this August 30th post.)

It would seem eBay's new search feature is not ready for Prime time - there is no Item Condition attribute for "refurbished" in diapers.

On the bright side, at least eBay didn't callout "used" diapers in search results!

Nothing about Wenig's ebafia is ready for prime time. In fact, ebafia is so poorly run by its current management cabal that it should be relegated to the 3 am or so Extenz time slot.

eBay executives are a sad bunch that just won't get the message from sellers that their stupid Promoted Listings they are trying to jam everywhere on every page is an abomination to sellers, so much so that all sellers should turn off cross promotion in their seller interface.

Devin has even run blocks of 'Sponsored Listings' at the top of sellers listing pages above everything in the past.

Can you say morons?

Here is the item you searched for, now we want to show you a few hundred more options......

In sales school they tell you to shut up when you closed the sale and if you keep talking you blow the sale, marketing experts teach that when a customer has too many options presented, 9 times out of 10 it confuses the customer and they don't purchase at all and you lose the impulse buy they were going to make.

eBay executives make blunder after blunder and wonder why their marketplace is an utter abomination to sellers who are also eBay buyers.

Time to clean house at the top of the company, Devin just keeps waxing worse and worse.

Way off topic but IMPORTANT

I just had a guy buy 4 items and went to combine his orders and seen this at the bottom of the page:

Select Payment Methods for this item

PayPal - payment will go to:
PayPal Email Address

You can offer buyers these additional payment options.

Money order or Cashier's check
Personal check
Cash on pickup

Merchant credit card
Only for sellers accepting credit card purchases through their own merchant account.
Visa / Mastercard Discover American Express

Send invoice to the buyer
Copy me on this invoice

So now eBay is allowing us to accept Money Orders and Personal Checks?

Apparently Devin does not care how you get paid, as long as he places a final value fee against your account every month.

In its early years, SNL's troupe was called "The Not Ready for Prime-Time Players."  (May still be, don't get to watch it much anymore.)

eBay's "team" could be called "The Not Ready for Prime-Time Clowns."

You see all this lunacy that Devin has cooked up all works together, force sellers into his folly Seller Hub where Devin can round up suckers to buy promoted listings, then pollute all search results with sponsored listings in addition to every eBay sellers product listing pages with ads that are nothing but 'Sponsored Listings'.

The one thing Devin has been completely successful at is utterly destroying the eBay marketplace and ruining any hope of regaining the integrity the marketplace once had before his moronic predecessor started the abominations and disruptive innovations.

Ebay promotions also disappear from ebay messaging. Its gotta be intentional. That way they can get away with not honoring their promotions. It happened with the last ebay bucks for sellers promotion. The email vanished from inboxes and sellers who sold items and qualified did not get their ebay bucks as promised and when they called customer service, customer service said "we can't see where you were ever sent the promotion" and the sellers did not get their ebay bucks!

Marketing by definition is 'meeting the needs of the customer', well eBay customers want a straight up product search engine that provides relevant results not corrupted by Devin's idiotic promoted listings trash.

eBay has failed the marketing test big time and Devin is a massive flop as CEO, one who was supposed to right the wrongs of Donahoe, all Devin has done is extend those wrongs and multiplied bad policies.

When will the board of directors and investors learn? How much more money do they need to bleed? This madness can be stopped by firing ALL of upper management and bringing in persons that came from other auction sites that have not had a chance to become polluted by the leftover admin at Ebay and the near(?) criminal ways of running a business like that. I am really beginning to believe that just about anyone with a high school education can and would do a better job at running ebay than the current clowns. After all, even Ringling Brothers went out of business and they were the Worlds Greatest Show! Ebay isn't even a speck compared to how great that circus was and yet Ebay contains all the clowns! Life's not fair! ROFL!

There's a (useless) Report an item button in the description section.  Use it.  Also tweet @askebay with the ID #.

I've been seeing this for quite a while (at least a month).  I think it's all done by bar code (which eBay requires).  The problem with that is that not all items with the same bar code are identical.  I sell collectible music, and in some cases, a limited/collectible edition has the same bar code as the standard edition.  In these cases, eBay states that the item can be found for much cheaper (often less than half the price I'm selling it for), but only after clicking the link, you find out that this incredible price eBay advertised is for a DIFFERENT item!  However, by this point the buyer has navigated away from my listing and is now on a page made up of listings that they aren't looking for.  For example, I just did a search for "the thing ennio morricone vinyl" among the listings were 2 of my listings - one for the regular edition, and one for the deluxe edition.  I'm asking $85 for the regular and $168.99 for the deluxe, both of which are at or near the going rate.  Under my listing for the regular edition, it says you can get it "new & refurbished" from $78.99.  Alright, fair enough, if a buyer wants to save $6, they can get it from another seller - the truth is, the $78.99 listing was in the same search results at the very top, so the buyer probably saw it already anyway.  BUT, under my listing for the deluxe (which happens to have the same bar code number), it says you can get it "new and refurbished" for $78.99.  This is a LIE!  When you click the link, you see a number of listings including both the regular and deluxe editions.  However, there is no deluxe edition to be found for anywhere near $78.99.

SEARCH NEEDS CHANGING

For god's sake just scrap the whole fricken thing because it's the biggest piece of junk I've ever seen - go back to the beginning (1995) - you know when things really started to happen. I have never seen a company work so hard at driving buyers and sellers alike off their own site. Kindergardners could do better. Oh wait - I got it - pot is legal in California right?

Refurbished diapers (once known as cloth diapers back in the day) ranks right up there with "rear brake" and "engine dress up kits" results when entering dress into the "tell us what are you are selling box" while attempting to list on eBay.

Refurbished diapers?  What pray tell is a refurbished diaper?  Never mind, I really don't want to know.
