Sellers Question Etsy Motives in Removing PayPal Icons

By: Ina Steiner

Sellers are upset over a change Etsy made to the way it displays PayPal in the shopping cart. Etsy removed the credit card icons that let shoppers know they could use credit cards to pay for that shop's items through PayPal.

Those who object say they face a decision: suffer a decrease in sales (for shops with standalone PayPal), or add Etsy's own Direct Checkout service that makes it clear shoppers can pay using a credit card.

Etsy acknowledged it made the change intentionally, but some sellers are skeptical at the reason provided - to reduce buyer confusion. Instead, some believe it was done to force sellers to use Etsy's Direct Checkout (DC) system.

Etsy DC offers PayPal and credit-card processing, but through Etsy's own PayPal and merchant credit card accounts.

We asked Etsy to respond to seller concerns. A spokesperson provided the following statement:

"After considering industry standards and research with buyers, we found that the credit card icons with the PayPal logo was a source of confusion during checkout. This change was intended to provide clarity to buyers and help with their checkout process. Buyers will continue to be able to purchase with PayPal either through their PayPal account or as a guest buyer as they have in the past."

Etsy has had some major problems with payment processing in the past, one reason why some sellers are so adamant about keeping their own PayPal accounts tied to their shops.

We'll dig into this more. Let us know what you think. Do you think including the credit card icons next to the PayPal button was confusing to shoppers?

And will shoppers who now see the message, "This shop accepts only PayPal" think they can't use a credit card to pay?

I am used to seeing PayPal with the little credit card icons after it (on every other site I shop on)

If I was seeing just the PayPal logo by itself, like you show up above, I would assume I cannot use my credit card at PayPal.

Their reasoning doesn't make sense to me, isn't ''industry standards'' to use the credit card icons with PayPal icon?

It's only confusing to shoppers who want to use paypal. As a seller I prefer paypal over Etsy's direct checkout. Paypal offers so much more, such as instant payments, a debit card that offers cash back, business loans and effective customer support at the call center. Etsy will charge the same as paypal, offer less and sneakily lead customers away from paypal and continue to offer less.

99.9% of Etsy, ebafia, and Amazon explanations for anything are NEVER to be trusted. This is one of the larger loads I've read in a while.

It's always about the money. ALWAYS.

I'm not a big PayPal fan, but ssweet pointed out, it's no contest between these payment services. PayPal is the lesser of the evils.

Advising buyers they can pay with PayPal can be inserted into listings but at a great -- and unnecessary inconvenience.

Etsy is slowly but surely going the same path that ebafia did.

Etsy sellers should object to these drip, drip, drip anti seller new policies by staging a meaningful boycott.

''I can think of nothing more gratifying than to see Brian Burke, Hal Lawton, and Devil Wenig frogmarched off their campus in handcuffs.''

That's not going to happen. Behind the scenes, eBay encourages their shill army to go after dissenters. In one eBay Facebook group, Lawton actually went in and REWARDED the people bashing this blog by sending them free shipping supplies. I could send Ina the whole thread, which I think would shock her, but I don't want to get kicked out of the group. Needless to say, I always check here first for the real scoop, and am thankful this site exists.

Heads up to Ina - the group is planning some dirty tricks aimed at ECB

Since many eCommerce sites take PayPal, I would think most customers would assume they can use it at checkout.  If not, I am guessing they also have a card for use elsewhere.  I don't think there are too many people that will only use PayPal online for security reasons, I would suspect almost everyone that has PayPal also has a card to use.

Oh BooHoo.
Just use direct check and quit your whining.
PayPal is no good.
I suffered abuse form a few buyers right after Etsy began accepting stupid PayPal. I hope they get rid of it.

"Dissenters" here could easily have some dirty tricks their up their sleeves as well -- like publishing ebafia execs home addresses, personal email addresses, and telephone numbers.

If what dc says is accurate, it would appear that the truth is hurting the ebafia triumvirate's playground and they want to start a another war with sellers.

As I've said elsewhere, ebafia has no institutional memory. They don't remember the disastruous consequences to ebafia when The Ho fought a war with his own customers, sellers, and ebafia corp is deservingly suffering the consequences of their losses.

A FORMER ebafia exec, Jose Mallabo started a war with Auctionbytes/Ecommercebytes and got fired.

DC, please preserve the thread if it exists and send it to Ina and David. Sending it to them no more identifies you than posting the information you've posted here.

@TheEnd

Do you think you could be a little more civil and a lot less mean in your posts?

I don't use Etsy nor ebay, but I do take PP. I also shop on some websites where PP is pretty much the only way to pay for goods as there is no direct deductions from bank accounts. One thing is sure though, on any internet site that someone wants to buy something they either have to use a credit card through PP, Stripe, etc, or some other way to pay, since so far there has not been invented a way to send actual cash to a seller!

After years of buying on line, if I see that PP icon, I don't really 'see' it. I just take a glance and see that I can use PP and if I have money in my account I use PP to pay, otherwise I go through a cc checkout using one of the several cards taken on line. I think sellers have to give their buyers more credit than they are doing. If PP is allowed they know they can use a credit card.

This is just another thuggish strong arm move on the part of Chad & Co. to force people to fork over more money for direct checkout.

Every time you hear someone say "I'm from Etsy and I want to help you" run as fast as you can in the other direction.

Etsy DC sucks and we never found out how many hundreds of thousands of dollars were "lost" last year in their payment processing fiasco.

If any department store like Walmart, Kohls or Target had ever pulled a stunt like this, which amounted to wholesale theft, their VPs would have been led away in handcuffs.  But it seems that nobody can touch Etsy.  I often wonder if it was because of Chad's ties to the Obama administration, because if so, it's a whole new ballgame and this time around, all bets are off.

It's about time something was done to protect the small struggling business owners.  We don't need a gang of thieves who have their hands in our pockets while telling us how much they're doing for us.

I haven't made an online purchase for a while so things may have changed. Before when you clicked on the Paypal link on any site, did it not take you to Paypal where you signed into your account, confirmed the purchase/payment and chose how the payment was made, credit card or Paypal balance etc? Now you just click and instant payment you do not have a choice?????

As with any online selling venue some sellers are successful making a living or second income and some are not. Are the successful sellers complaining how they get paid or more concerned with providing customer service, making more sales and shipping the days sales?

Is a missing icon really that big of a deal? I would be more concerned with the sellers reputation, delivery cost and where the item was shipping from.

For those that find a missing icon a tragedy I have a simple solution to your problem, grow up, get a life, move on and quit buying online, just go to the brick and mortar stores where you have a choice, cash or credit.

In the early years, Paypal was very fair, they screw both buyers and sellers with equal injustice.  How many times did I hear from a buyer: ''Sorry, can't pay you, Paypal froze my account.''.  As for myself, I was on a buying trip to Asia from Paypal surprised me by freezing my account.

Since then Paypal has ''cleaned up their act''.  But with six months for any idiot buyer to demand a full refund, all sellers are at Paypal's mercy.

After being burned badly by eBay in my 12th year and nearly made homeless, I find selling on Etsy a pure pleasure.

I especially love the direct checkout.  No Paypal to worry about and my money is deposited in my account on the second business day.  Without fail!

With way lower listing and selling fees, no fees on shipping charges, nice buyers, easy this and easy that, I am a huge fan of Etsy.

Hide Paypal all you want.  Paypal deserves that and more.  Freeze my account will you...

Sounds to me like "goin broke" has never been an online seller, successful or  unsuccessful.  If he or she had been, they would understand why Etsy sellers are so upset with this latest bit of underhandedness.

In today's over saturated, cutthroat ecommerce world, every single element is important- even something so small as a CC icon.

For your information, most buyers are not that savvy.  When they go to buy something on an Etsy shop, it now looks like they can only use Paypal if they have a PP account.  That's a really big deal and can cause a prospective buyer to look elsewhere.

I can see the difference already- not one PP sale since Etsy inflicted this disaster.

''goin broke'' has been and still is active in e-commerce selling and must be successful to remain doing so.
''Flying Childers'', if you live in a glass house don't throw stones.

''For your information, most buyers are not that savvy.I can see the difference already- not one PP sale since Etsy inflicted this disaster.''
Maybe your attitudes is the reason.

Etsy sellers had lots of notice and time to either integrate Paypal into Direct Checkout or keep it as stand alone. The choice was yours and nothing was forced upon you. How I run my business is my business and no one else's. Look back at Ebay, they forced you into Paypal only, now with a 180 day return policy across the board. You can specify less time for returns but Paypal will refund up to the 180 days.
Johnny Ho sank the Ebay ship and now is on his way to the controls of Paypal.

As long as I make sales and get paid I don't care how. Never had a problem with Direct Checkout or any other payment service and yes I do still have a Paypal account also.

I've used PayPal since at least 2000, maybe 1999, with no problems to speak of. Likewise, while I've heard of problems with Direct Checkout, I've never experienced any problems with it myself.

I pulled out of Etsy when they started grabbing my Paypal and waiting a week or more to pay me. Later I saw they had cash flow problems and was glad I did. Thankfully, I don't have to sell there to make ends meet.

Tiffee, Etsy never ''grabbed'' anyone's PayPal. If you were on Etsy prior to 12/31/15, you had the opportunity to opt out of integrated PayPal. As for Direct Checkout, you can request that funds in your Shop Payment Account be transferred the next day!

I'm beginning to wonder if there aren't a few Etsy shills on this site too.  You can recognize them immediately by the way they jump the shark every time an issue is mentioned.  The truth will always come out.

Flying Childers, if you're calling me a shill, think again! I have sold on Etsy for more than 10 years and will be among the first to say the site isn't perfect! I will also correct misinformation about Etsy when I see it.
