Amazon Experiences Checkout Glitch Tuesday Afternoon

Amazon shoppers were stopped in their tracks when they found they were unable to complete purchases on the marketplace for a brief period on Tuesday. The company's solid reliability has people perplexed when things do go awry.

The following message greeted buyers in North American and Europe when they tried to checkout on Amazon this afternoon:

"Oops! We're sorry" - An error occurred when we tried to process your request. Rest assured, we're working to resolve the problem as soon as possible. If you were trying to make a purchase, please check to confirm that the order was placed. We apologize for the inconvenience."

The problem peaked just before 5 pm ET, and Checkout appeared to be down for about an hour.

"Been trying to order my books for an hour and @amazon checkout is down and wont even let me rent or buy anything," tweeted one user at 4:51 pm.

People reported the problem on DownDetector.

Sellers noticed as well, with one posting a thread on the Amazon boards titled, "I wonder how much this glitch is costing us." Another posted at 5:27 that they had noticed a 40-minute window when they received no orders.

What's really notable is that when there is a glitch amazon owns up to it.
