Amazon launched a new car-shopping site today, but while you can find pricing and reviews - and you can add cars to your Amazon wish lists or "garage" feature - you can't actually add a car to your Amazon shopping cart.
The "car research destination and automotive community" looks to be a first step in launching cars for sale, but when we asked about its plans, a spokesperson said she was unable to comment on what Amazon may or may not do the in future.
The Washington Post noted that Amazon already sells millions of car parts and accessories. "One selling point for Amazon Vehicles, according to the company, will be that customers can leave reviews for cars in much the same way as they can for any other item on the site."
The newspaper believes the new car-shopping feature will help Amazon sell more parts and accessories.
eBay has been selling cars online since 2000. Former eBay CEO Meg Whitman had said eBay launched Motors because they discovered people were buying and selling cars on its auction site even prior to them creating the special section.
Over the years, eBay Motors has evolved from a P2P marketplace to more of a B2C marketplace. And it has not been resting on its laurels - just this year, eBay acquired Cargigi in March to help car dealers onboard their inventory to eBay Motors more easily.
Will Amazon be able to offer a selling platform for cars, and how big of a threat do you think Amazon is to eBay? |
