New Categories Are Closed to Rank and File eBay Sellers
By: Ina Steiner
eBay is fond of saying it doesn't compete with its sellers, but it's increasingly entering categories that its sellers are barred from participating in while giving preference to a chosen few.
Today, the category is gift cards for company stock - see the article in Tuesday's Newsflash, available now
. Shoppers can purchase gift cards that allow recipients to cash them in for shares of stock in publicly traded companies.
Because they are delivered digitally, only PayPal is allowed to sell the new cards on eBay, Ryan Moore confirmed, citing the gift card policy. eBay has also entered the wine and live-auction categories, which are restricted categories.
Will the new categories bring shoppers to the site who might then stick around? Or is eBay making it increasingly difficult for its rank-and-file sellers to compete? What do you think?
