Etsy Users Contend with Privacy Issue, Dupe Payments

By: Ina Steiner

Etsy sellers are worried once again about privacy issues, with some sellers stating that Etsy is publishing their personal names on customer email receipts instead of their company names. In addition, some buyers are complaining that Etsy is charging them multiple times for the same order, and sellers are dealing with refund issues.

On Friday, a seller started a thread on the Etsy boards, "Yesterday I noticed that the email receipts being sent to customers once they placed an order now show my personal name instead of my company name. It's not at the top of the receipt, but at the part where it says: "Additional Information from (your shop name):" Several other people have reported having this problem, and it seems to only be people using the standard Etsy policies," she wrote.

An Etsy moderator responded on Saturday morning, saying she was sending a report to the Etsy team.

One seller said their full name should NOT be pulled as it's only available on the credit card and billing information on Etsy. Other sellers gave myriad reasons why they were concerned about the new practice. A similar incident in March saw an outpouring of outrage from sellers.

Etsy users are also dealing with payment issues. It appears sellers are experiencing problems with refunds, while Etsy appears to be charging some customers twice for the same order. In response to a post from Thursday describing the latter issue, an Etsy moderator wrote this afternoon (Saturday):

"I know most of you are sellers reporting this issue in the thread, but if your buyer can send us a screenshot of their CC statement reflecting the duplicate charge, we can investigate further. If they can add something in the subject line like "Duplicate Credit Card charge for order" this can help us gather the reports."

The problem follows on the heels of a major payment processing issue caused by Etsy's third-party payment processor, Worldpay that stretched out for over a week.

Update 7/17/16: Etsy originally denied it was withdrawing funds a second time for single purchases made days earlier, but buyers are refuting that. We've just sent an inquiry to Etsy PR and will continue to follow this major problem.

Update 7/24/16: Etsy issued another update on 7/22/16 about the Worldpay payment processing breakdown, which you can read on the Etsy announcement board.

Not only that, but Etsy is also double charging the buyers in the continuing saga of the payment processing fiasco. Check out this thread in progress today:

Regarding
the other issue of sellers' private information. I had the most unbelievable experience a few weeks ago.

I was going to buy something from a seller in the UK and somehow, as I was going through his shop info, profile, etc. I came across his complete financial profile. I mean his bank account number, the name of several banks, his personal ID for letters of credit, credit card numbers. I mean it looked like the kind of info that was an ID thief's dream! So I didn't buy anything but I sent a convo to the seller telling him that all his most personal information was out there on the web for all to see.

I never heard back from him and am not sure if he ever took down the profile.

Chad & Co. really need to be under investigation by the Federal Prosecutor for the Southern District of NY, Preet Bharara. This has gone on long enough.

can it possibly get any worse on this site? Miserable stupid Employees.

the biggest bunch of moronic idiots imaginable running the company with no leader at the helm.. just another do nothing idiot.

imagine you but a more expensive item on Etsy for whatever reason and Etsy  double charges you or triple charges you? this could leave your credit card useless for needed purchases and... screw up your credit score by causing you to take the credit limit to the max and really not be able to pay it off in full because it is an error that needs to be resolved at that point with refunds.

would you as a buyer EVER BUY from ETSY Again? Hell No!

Why can't an 11 year old company get its shit together? Etsy has been one glitch after another this year ... and not many sales lately either!

Etsy has died.

I have an Etsy store. I used to sell vintage on eBay and did great there, until they started hiding my listings from search. My sales stopped, so I gave up and started selling on Ruby Lane.

I did great on Ruby Lane until they decided to stop paying Google for advertising or search visibility. My sales stopped dead, so I gave up and started selling on Etsy.

Then Etsy changed their search algorithm in catastrophic ways, one of which was geographically weighted results. I live in an economically depressed area; my sales stopped. The only convos I get are from local tire-kickers wanting to drop by to inspect my wares before buying.

Etsy is the worst-managed ecommerce site after eBay, whose business model Etsy seems to have embraced. Both are incompetent, and they are thieves.

Etsy's profit center is no longer based on sellers selling stuff. Charging fees for listings no one sees and fees for Pattern stores sellers don't want, double and triple billing sellers for refunds -- no one should be surprised that Etsy would do something as assinine as publicly broadcast proprietary customer information. It's a good bet someone paid them to do it.

Ironically and sadly enough, Chad Dickerson is an Advisor to this
"Security company" called Signal Sciences.
It is privately held.

Ina, another issue I saw reported on the forum was a seller sent a refund to a buyer of, I think, $1.55, but the buyer reported that the original sale amount of $81 was showing on the buyer's credit card as being refunded. It appears that every aspect of a seller's finances connected to Direct Checkout has gone belly up.

Etsy's Chief Technical Officer John Allspaw is another Advisor to Signal Sciences. He sold almost all of his etsy stock beginning on June 20, 2016 worth over 2 million dollars. Insiders have sold 56,940,091 of their etsy shares over the last 12 months.
Here is the SEC Form 4.

Sellers are now also having funds taken out of their accounts for bills that should not be due, or have needed to be paid.
Partial payments in the interim are being charged the full amount.
The Bugs section of the Etsy forums is full of horror stories.

this new development smells of a company desperate for cash. In fact all of this seems to be cash short related.

I would like to remind sellers that the NY State Attorney Generals Office is Online if Etsy rips you off.

If you do not depend on sales at Etsy.. I would advise that you close your shop there until a later time. Pay your bill in full and be done with them for now.

Worldpay has also made trouble for
bookies trying to pay off bet winners. I would advise they avoid upsetting these people unless they want to sleep with the fishes.

More people reporting today that they are being ripped off by Etsy, including sellers who are having money removed from their bank accounts for bills that were already paid or not due.

Folks, this is what used to be called highway robbery aka theft.

Why are Chad & Co. allowed to get away with stealing from their customers?

Imagine if I pulled something like this in my B&M store. Imagine if this happened to you in a restaurant where you had given them your credit card to charge and you got home and noticed that they'd hit your bank account.

This is also known as IDENTITY THEFT and it is a a crime in every jurisdiction: federal, state, international.

Has our legal system gotten so corrupt that only the little people get punished? Is this why Chad and the VCs can get away with crimes that would have the rest of us doing prison time?

Scary.

and Chad is on Vacation - or is he? was he removed finally? If so too little too late. well one can hope!

10 years on Etsy and I will tell you , this is the worst I have seen it and I really believe they are in deep trouble.

the SEC needs to take a very good look at this company. I assume the stock holders will e the last to be aware of this situation and they deserve what they get for not looking at the reports all over the internet pointing to a disaster.

It never ends with these arrogant jerks. Here's another thread about personal/ private information being disseminated on the internet by Etsy.

I'm sure that people who signed the TOU never imagined they were giving away their privacy rights.

What is worse is that all these merchants continue to offer Etsy Direct Checkout as their payment option placing themselves at risk. If this has been going on for weeks and (Bugs) Update by Bug Updates Week of July 11 - July 17 by employee MK tells them '' We're receiving reports of duplicate charges on billing statements for orders. There is a delay with the authorization charge dropping off the statement.''...then why would any seller continue to sell using Direct Checkout when they could easily resolve this issue themselves offering Pay Pal only? Or maybe sellers do not have a good standing with Pay Pal and have no other choice but to offer DC? Clicking into their forums, a seller has started a topic stating that her buyer has been charged ($750) twice. Who can even begin to absorb this happening still? It is absurd.

I cannot (will not) buy on Etsy knowing that my transaction will be compromised confirmed by Etsy Moderators. What is it going to take for these sellers to wake up and see that it is going to happen again (now) next? Does anyone think perhaps the site has been hacked but they're not telling their subscribers?

I guess that what you get when you hire (children) 18+ to handle your business.

What a diaper mess!

Etsy has forced people to use their crummy Direct Checkout and many are not allowed to use stand alone Paypal. It is not the Sellers' fault. Etsy had their own reasons for commandeering the payments. The customers were not given a choice.

@Diaper Mess - Not all sellers can offer standalone PayPal as the payment processor. In the last few years (not sure how many), any new sellers signing up for Etsy, or old sellers signing up for an additional store, are only allowed to offer Direct Checkout. In reading posts on the forum, I see that many sellers are begging Etsy to offer standalone PayPal to everyone until the craziness is resolved.

goodness gracious! check out this ''refund re-charged'' thread on Etsy:
https://www.etsy.com/teams/7720/bugs/discuss/17927426/
>buyer
states: ''So I got an email from etsy saying that they returned $28.71 by mistaken instead of $4.95. So, they were going to recharge the $23.76 back. Well, the $28.71 was never sent back to my account, but the $23.76 has been charged.''

this ''money grab'' by Etsy is mushrooming.... the mind boggles!
