eBay Revives Guaranteed Arrival Program

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

A reader alerted us to a survey eBay sent that said it was exploring the possibility of launching a "Guaranteed Arrival" program. The idea is that sellers can choose which listings they want to offer a guaranteed arrival date.

What's in it for the seller? The incentive is better exposure for those listings that offer it.

The risk: sellers are responsible - if buyers don't receive their purchases on time, they will be "compensated."

Note that we've only heard from one seller and haven't been able to find anyone discussing it on industry boards. The reader said the program will start on December 15th.

Going back to the archives, we found eBay had launched a "guaranteed arrival" program in 2011 (you can even see a screenshot), but it was limited to Diamond sellers. The URL for the program no longer works - apparently it never got off the ground after launching 5 years ago.

What would you think of such a program? And would it be palatable on any of the venues on which you sell?

Maybe the post office can guarantee to pay for things for stuff they dont deliver "on time". Especially on Dec 15th.

Seriously Ebay, no seller that I can think of would ever commit to the stupid shipping estimates you give out.

Another really dumb idea from eBay. A Seller would be a fool to be part of this.

I would think that eBay is still desperately throwing spaghetti at the wall; and I wonder how much longer this utterly unscrupulous entity can keep showing a profit while their marketplace is so obviously continuing on its way on the downhill journey to the sewage farm ...

eBay keeps throwing out visibility carrots like there was no tomorrow.

With all the various factors which allegedly raise items in visibility, it is no wonder eBay's search algorithm is unable to surface relevant results.

Management knows full well that sellers have no way to view what level of alleged 'elevation' their listings are entitled to and as such are simply throwing out bull ship in the hopes sellers will fall for it.

USPS delivers late more often then they deliver on-time, so unless they are going to start paying out insurance claims just because an item is late, then I (as the seller) can not do the same.

Can any seller actually guarantee a delivery date? With USPS, they will only guarantee Express Mail/EMS will arrive on time. However, the last time I sent an item across the country by Express Mail, it took over a week to arrive because the package got caught up in one of those never-ending loops on the East Coast where it was traveling between two post offices which had no relation to the recipient's location. (The postage was refunded to me.)

I haven't had any experience with overnight shipping through UPS or FedEx, but I've had many packages, especially UPS, that show online a delivery of X date, which got "up-dated" to the next day or even the day after. And it's worse in December with the massive influx of packages and only so many hours in a day within which the drivers can deliver.

As far as buyers being "compensated"...I'd love to know how much eBay intends to give back to the buyers.

Any seller who would sign up for this program would have to crazy.

95% of my USPS packages arrive on time or sooner. I might go for it.

"Compensated?" Yep, right out the pockets of sellers.

The program makes NO SENSE (not that anything on eBay does).

How can a seller - any seller - guarantee a service from another company?

Can I promise that my local dairy will deliver milk at 6AM tomorrow to my grocery store?

Its bizarre on its face - its absurd.

Sellers who live in large cities or near "good post offices" will have a better chance at this - but what does it say (or not say) of how/what eBay thinks of sellers in more rural areas where theres 1 po in an entire town and it does "what it wants".

How can any seller promise anything even remotely CLOSE to this?

If EBAY wants to put ITS money where ITS MOUTH is - great. I promise you will have your item in 10 mins - eBay - pay up!

Stupid eBay people doing stupid eBay things.

No wonder the stock cant cross $30 a share ... imbeciles !

@pace306, You presume that eBay gives a hoot about "sellers in more rural areas"?—LOL

I have no doubt that eBay has no interest in small sellers—anywhere.

This is a deal for eBay's preferred sellers that have or are close to reliable shipping facilities ...

Oh for crying out loud eBay. Give it up. We have seen time and time again that the promise of visibility is a big fat lie unless you are an enterprise seller.

Outside of drool guy does anyone believe this?

Ebay has been using this better exposure trick over and over and over with TRS, TRS+, defects, feedback, 1 day delivery, free shipping etc. With so much ''better'' exposure all sellers items should be shown 24/7 everywhere. Sellers have found out, except fool, most of that promised exposure was/is being taken away so eBay can start charging to be supposedly visible. Of course, this is all based on whether eBay's exposure machine even works. For all we know, and for legal reasons, your  ''better'' exposure will be in the Mojave Desert and only at high noon.

As said above - its the 1 step forward - Visibility if you do X, then eBay takes it back for some other reason (1 day handling or no returns).

That MORON CEO Wenig should furnish all eBay sellers (by law) a spreadsheet on all the gives and takes that eBay does - INCLUDING the secret ones.

Its ASTOUNDING that in 2016 you pay for a service but have NO IDEA what you are getting or why.

Why cant it just be ORGANIC?? WHy all the lies and games ... then eBay wants to know why they are doing so badly ...!

The question is not what ebay sellers can do for ebay, but what ebay can do for its sellers.

Why is ebay not negotiating with the USPS to make ebay packages a priority along with Amazon packages?  Why are ebay packages not delivered on Sundays and holidays like Amazon?  Surely ebay has to be the #2 shipper behind Amazon, why are they not using that as leverage.

Griff told us the the ebay team negotiated FOR 3 DAYS! to get ebay sellers the exact same rates that everyone else online was offering.  Wow, such fantasic work there.  While at the same time, Amazon was announcing that their sellers would use the old rates, while still getting the priority treatment form the USPS.  What exactly was ebay doing in these negotiation?  Stellar performance there ebay!

No seller anywhere can guarantee arrival dates for postage. My mail clerk told me in no uncertain terms that the PO does NOT guarantee or even promise to get your mail to whomever you are sending it to. In other words, you pay your money and take your chances. Ebay is nuts as well as any seller that falls into this trap is nuts to think that guaranteeing something you have no control will be of benefit to you. It will bite you in the backside!

Yet another thing about ecrater, and yes. sales are slow (which I lay directly at google's feet) currently, but while we have rules about how soon something needs shipped, there is no way they would expect us to guarantee when it would arrive.

We could use a couple of hundred more GOOD sellers on ecrater to help us with visiblity and selection. The more sellers (and I mean good ones, not the barely literate, selling yard sale casts offs or more imported pirated goods from China) we can get the healthier the site will be and sales, I'm sure, will pick up.

this is just a thank you to Philip Cohen, I heartjacksparrow, ming the merciless and eccomerce for their comments over the few years. It helped me leave ebay (and even ecrater) to a more fair place to sell my records. I am only a single seller and can't be involved with the time wasting of promoting my store-I NEED an online partner that does this work-finding new merch, listing it, mailing it take up all my time- and my track record of selling clearly shows this... Too bad eBay gave this up long ago-they had all the business and threw it all away. And ebay lies about it-that's what really pissed me off-I will not deal with a proven liar

The only way I can get my eBay packages to arrive on time is to send them in Amazon boxes.
