What Do You Think of the Etsy Shop Redesign?

By: Ina Steiner

Etsy is redesigning seller shop home pages, it revealed today. It's giving sellers the ability to update their home pages prior to going live - in other words, you can play with the redesign before shoppers will see it.

One big change that looks like a win for sellers: Previously, listings on the home page were sorted by "most recent" by default. Etsy's Director of Product Management Arpan Podduturi told us the new tool lets sellers customize the order of items as they appear on desktop, mobile web, and the Etsy app.

He also explained that currently, sellers can categorize their items in up to 10 sections for a single shop. They will now be able to create up to 15 different sections.

But the biggest benefit Etsy is touting is the ability for sellers to redesign their shop home pages "with a more modern aesthetic and mobile-friendly features," with tools for sellers to tell their unique stories.

Etsy is also offering a new structured shop policy format. It's clear the company thinks this is an important feature so that shoppers will be clear on sellers' policies - the new template is designed to make it easier for sellers to communicate those policies more clearly to buyers before they make a purchase.

Starting today, sellers will have a preview period to play around with the new features and get their shop looking the way they want before the changes become visible to shoppers beginning April 5th.

Let us know what you think of the changes, we'll have more in tomorrow's Newsflash newsletter.

I just gave it a quick look-see and I think it's pretty nice.  I haven't had a chance yet to play around with the settings, though.  I like it--fresh, clean, updated, and organized.

I don't mind the change. The only thing I would suggest is to make the feedback type and photos a little smaller.

Beware of canva.com. Cheap stuff is free--upgrades are not. I think it gets invoiced (maybe monthly?) couldn't figure it out. Most likely another ''seller service'' Etsy wants you to buy. The new layout is awful--can't find listings easily.

Read the Etsy forums about this issue--a few like it. Far more hate it. Seems it was done for the mobile experience, which brought out a comment from one person who said they never downloaded the Etsy app because of the invasion of  privacy issues: downloading the app gives Etsy permission to see everything youy see on your phone, and not just Etsy pages, but everything else you see. Can this be true? and Can this be legal? Ina, you should investigate...Seriously

The new Simplified Shop Policies are a disaster (and worthy of an in-depth separate post).

See, for example, this Etsy discussion thread:

I frequently find "designed for mobile" to be really counterintuitive.

Forget that it often forces you to browse large catalogs 3 items at a time.  Forget the pile of usability problems presented when paging is handled stupidly.  Forget the complete absence of visual cues, all the way down to borders around elements.

On a screen that's 4-6 inches across, real estate is at a premium.  Yet here they squander 75% of it with useless static content.  What kind of drugs are their duhvelopers on?  And they're foisting this abomination on the desktop too?

This is among the most meaningless developments from Etsy yet.  What they need isn't bigger banners, more white on white, and better mobile visibility.  They need CATEGORIES, a DISTINCTIVE look, and HTML!

Etsy developers don't believe in innovative disruption (fortunately), nor do they have ANY ABILITY to design a site with a pleasant, unique look (unfortunately).  The powers that be at Etsy have dictated:

A White on White Site,
To no ones Delight

Even factory made,
Whether Silver or Jade

Of cloth or of suede,
By kids in 3rd grade

Pretend it's Fair Trade
As long as it's paid

For over a decade now, Etsy has been the only multi-shop venue of its size that did not require shops to write and publish their own Policies before opening for business.  Etsy corporate has been catering to sellers who are unprofessional (at the very least) and deceptive for years now.  Adding some poorly written vague universal Policy statement to most shops won't change the fact that Etsy is infested with shops run by resellers and scammers.  How many times did sellers ask in the forums about a redesign of their shops looming on the near horizon after stumbling across something strange being tested on the site, only to be met with denials?  What ''improvements'' has Etsy made to shops over the past year?  Added Shop Updates (unusable if you don't have a smart phone), Shop Videos, and now this.  What Etsy needs to fix is their poor category structure and their rigged SEARCH algorithm.  Oh, and legitimize the millions of reseller shops on the site by officially stating that items for sale no longer need to be designed or made by the shops, vintage, or crafting supplies.

What  "Life During Wartime" said.

Which is why I just simply gave up on Etsy.  I have over 10,000 vintage items, but without a category structure, etsy is hopeless.

NOBODY buys vintage from a phone.

MY GOD, they are soooooooooo STUPID!

Etsy had the opportunity to really be something, given all the problems over at Ebay.  They were literally handed a golden opportunity.

Nope.

Just one more corporation, with braindead 20-30 somethings trying to show their boss how smart they are.

Trouble is, their boss just turned 40, and is stupid too.

GOD how I wish I was younger, and could start up a Vintage/Handmade/Collectibles site like so MANY of the posters here talk about, would like to see, and would patronize.

I still believe, especially given all the successfull start-ups in the last few years, that Ebay, Etsy, Zibbet, & Others, could be blown away by just one decent site.

& How about this for an idea? 1% of sales for a fee. DOES ANYONE REALIZE HOW MUCH THAT IS ????  (Let alone 2.9% - 4%)

Well, back to working on my own site.  Only trouble with that are the Google rules.

well Etsy said they were going to give 6 months maternity leave to their employees and increase their employees greatly this year.

on top of that the new multi sex bathrooms they installed.. I mean am i the only one that sees the correlation? LOL

Ok that was posted tongue in cheek... I mean I am sure Etsy needs MORE employees To create things the sellers do not want and of course after they hire a few hundred more they have to appear busy... anything but answer the phones!

I am waiting to form my opinion on this new shop until i see it completed.. April 5th?

At this point it is not a ''complete Disaster''... yet.. give them time and as a few others noted.. is this about charging new fees with special new taxes?

Ah.. a road tax?

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, low and behold, a new shop design. I have come to the conclusion that what's really needed at Etsy is a mass exorcism at company HQ. There is no other explanation other than satanic possession that can account for the disasters that they have foisted on the sellers. May God have mercy on their souls.

Thank goodness I have the option to get rid of that little banner! Used to drive me crazy, I love that we can put a larger one there now.

I played around with the new shop design today and it really looks terrible.

The banner I've used for years no longer fits apparently, I had to use an old one that I don't really care for anymore.  The shop picture and personal picture are in odd places.

Three ginormous pictures across looks pretty bad too, they were already plenty big with 4 across.

Having all the policy stuff on the bottom of the listing looks really awkward too.

Just don't like it.

If you think buyers using a mobile phone are going to continually scroll to find all the information that Etsy has put there, you are probably kidding yourself.  Policies which were never read will still not be read and everything else including reviews, thank goodness, will never be seen.  I haven't cared about anything Etsy has done for many moons now and I could care less about this new shop view.  If it helps fine, if not then par for the Etsy course.

I guess if you are buying any of the millions of $2 chinese factory goods on Etsy then the quick purchase on a mobile phone as you are driving down the freeway @ 80mph is fine.

But to ruin the PC view to accommodate this is typical Etsy Logic.. i mean lack of.

Personally I wish Etsy would direct their efforts on improvements more helpful to sellers.

Remember when it was promised that there would be real phone support by the end of 2014?

this new shop views is using up massive amounts of Ram and is shutting down older computers with hung up screens.. so much for Etsy's so called programmers.. once again they have proven their skill level.
