Amazon Designs a New Way to Compete with Retailers

As if it weren't already getting increasingly difficult to compete on Amazon - now the marketplace has launched its own fashion brand for men available exclusively for Prime members:

"Introducing: Buttoned Down, a New Line of Wardrobe Essentials for Men, Exclusive to Amazon Prime"

The Buttoned Down brand launched today with a collection of Supima cotton men's dress shirts. Click on a shirt listing, and you'll see Amazon is going after rival retailers by significantly under-pricing them.

For example, here's a listing for its "Buttoned Down Men's Non-Iron Classic Fit Button Collar Dress Shirt" - scroll down, and you'll see a section called "Us & Them" that shows the price of the Amazon shirt at $49, compared to Brooks Brothers: $92, Nordstrom: $69.50, and Lands' End: $55 - $65.

Amazon is also offering an Unconditional Satisfaction Guarantee: "If you are not completely satisfied with the Buttoned Down shirt at any time, we are happy to give you a full refund."

In its press release, Amazon says there's more to come: "Buttoned Down is one of the first Amazon private apparel brands to launch exclusively to Prime Members, with plans to expand into dress pants, sport shirts and sweaters in the future."

It seems no category of retail is safe from Amazon's grasp, from fashion to grocery and everything in between.

Amazon still makes 50 percent of their income from their selle4s. If I was you guys I'd drop Amazon in a flash..stop relying on their traffic and build your own. We do not need these middle men marketplaces screwing everyone over.

We need to force people to look elsewhere instead of defaulting to amazon.

The pricing mentioned for Brooks Brothers' and Nordstrom shirts are those shirts at full price. You can easily get either of those branded shirts for far less if you are a smart shopper.  In fact, I've seen them for far less on occasion, especially with an online or store coupon or in a Brooks Brothers Outlet or Nordstrom Rack store. Sometimes if you buy three at a time at Brooks Brothers you can get them for about $35.00 per shirt. Both stores also have great sales and I often receive a mail flyer for substantial reduction of prices from Brooks Brothers for certain dates.

Both stores are also known for stellar customer service.  Brooks Brothers have been around since 1818. I doubt if the executives at Brooks Brothers are losing any sleep over this.

I wonder just how big Amazon feel that they have to be.

Costco offer some beautiful high end dress shirts under the Kirkland brand so one doesn't have to necessarily run to Amazon for a quality shirt at a good price.  And the men's Kirkland brand undershirts are some of the highest quality that I have seen on the market.

Whats good about it is if you have to ever return anything NO MATTER WHAT THE REASON you just return and get your money back.

Never have we ever been called a liar, scammer, stupid, ignorant or we didn't read the description. Amazon is a just return it with no questions or snarky remarks made, unlike Ebay or any of the other sleazy sites.

FeelingFroggy , it does indeed sound like a liar/scammer's paradise.

I mean we eBay sellers all know first hand that eBay buyers are the role model for honesty and integrity. Veritable angels.

I can see where this move could trigger some concern, however Amazon is a huge marketplace with plenty of niches and space to offer just about anything. My question is whether shoppers will jump on the Amazon Shirts based on price or still with their band loyalties. We have been extremely pleased with our Amazon Handmade sales and customers this year.

Going back to McPosty's comment about dropping Amazon or all these big venues, it's far easier said than done. This has been a terrible year for selling outside the venues. Small boutiques just don't have the advertising budget to pay big for Adwords or other social media campaigns. Once way up front in Google searches, we find ourselves headed to the back of line as big players such as Kohls even invade the stamped jewelry markets.

We would love to say goodbye to venues and all the non-sense, but getting there will be a huge challenge.

^^ Exactly.  I see these brands new and used for less than half the retail price.  Usually get them at rummage sales.  Men are getting smarter.  See them in the thrift stores All. the. time.

In the USA we still have anti-trust laws on the books and they were written for big corporations exactly like Amazon.

Amazon is a huge monopoly that needs to be broken up.  I do not often advocate for Government intervention, but it is long overdue when it comes to Amazon, Ebay, Facebook and some of the others.  Amazon is by far the worst as it absolutely kills small businesses.
