Major Outage Across Multiple Ecommerce Sites

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

Readers are reporting problems accessing various ecommerce sites, including PayPal, Etsy and Twitter.

A check of the main page on downdetector.com shows a problem across a wide number of sites this morning - and not isolated to ecommerce websites.

A similar incident on a smaller scale occurred recently - it affected a large number of users, but not everyone.

This appears to be an Internet connectivity problem. We're working to get answers - let us know if you're having access problems today, and which sites you can reach, and which sites you cannot.

Update: things have been getting back to normal. Here's an article on TheNextWeb about the cause of the problem - it says "A distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack against DynDNS." Thanks to commentors here and on our Facebook page!

According to a number of news sites, it appears to have been a problem originating with Amazon cloud servers.

I am reading that it was caused by hackers. I guess nothing is impenetrable and secure.

I received confirmation on background that this was an issue due to a denial of service attack relating to a major DNS host.

Apparently mostly an East Coast problem.

The downdetector.com home page really maps out the problem and shows it was fine for a while, but reports have spiked again.

I jinxed myself by doing 8 hours of tune-up work on Etsy and eBay and Amazon yesterday. Amazon seems to be benefiting from all of this but Amazon is my slowest site anyway.

Glad i got my shipping done before it spread to the Midwest... As for paypal, they have ebay's pound of flesh and very little else so if they go tits up so be it. Suppose i'll just watch the ship sink and go blub blub blub. They did this hacking stuff a few weeks or so ago when the DNS athority was surrendered to the UN, so this isn't surprising.

@ 27tcle

Bull! Stop spreading alarmist nonsense. Either you don't know how to correctly read header info or you're just full of beans but in any case you DID NOT receive an email originating from a a legit internal PayPal server that contained a spoof PayPal site address in Russia.

Feel free to post all of the header info though, of course after you have sent it to spoof@paypal.com

Oh , & private servers are safe. Wake up America. The tip of the, bring America to its knees , has only begun. All the signs are there.
I would not be so quick to blame anyone. Smoking mirrors in a vicious election , would not surprise  me. We can hope for the best , & expect the worse.

It was probably as simple as Hillary trying to get on the internet.

gizmo: It's "smoke and mirrors," not smoking mirrors. The expression refers to illusions magicians create using smoke for some tricks and mirrors for some tricks. Very amusing that you wrote "smoking mirrors." That would be a sight.
