eBay Product Reviews Get Sellers in Trouble

By: Ina Steiner

With traffic suffering due to Google penalties, eBay is pinning its hopes on its catalog strategy. But one part of that "make or break" initiative is leaving sellers vulnerable to misbehavior by their fellow sellers.

eBay is encouraging buyers to leave reviews for the products they purchase, and as one reader informed us through a report on the Ecommerce EKG board over the weekend, that can spell big trouble.

"Mass chaos is being caused in the coin category where buyers are leaving product reviews as seller feedbacks. Almost every product review I read in coin categories are actually specific item feedback," the seller wrote. "In one case a buyer left a "feedback" saying a 1918/7 D Nickel was not genuine. Now every 1918/7 D Nickel on eBay that uses the catalog has a review spammed in the listing saying the coin is a fake. Awesome..."

We confirmed that listings from different sellers included the following product review on the coin they had listed on eBay:

"This coin is not a 1918/7-d as the seller claims, just a regular 1918-d nickel."

Not only does it jeopardize the sale of listings for that particular item, but it could scare buyers away from all of the affected sellers' listings. It's not even clear if the seller who sold the nickel to that unhappy reviewer is selling that particular coin at this time.

In tomorrow (Monday)'s Newsflash (available now), we delve into the issue of eBay's product catalog strategy and how the product review feature is a fatal flaw the way it's currently implemented.

In the meantime, we're curious if readers were aware of eBay reviews. Do you see them displayed on listings? Has eBay ever asked you to fill out a review, as this reader described in June?

Could eBay make it clearer exactly what a product review is, and is not?

And do product reviews make sense for used goods and collectible categories such as coins?

Anything to reduce the number of Top Rated Sellers.

Threaten to sue this buyer if not removed immediately and then do it if you can disprove his or her allegedly false authenticity claim.

Well publicized lawuts against liar buyers could quickly bring an end to ebay's duplicitous behavior.

eBay sends me "reminders" to review and rate products I buy on eBay. And yes I do see ratings displayed on items I am considering buying on eBay. However, I do not see how an opinion posted by a complete stranger with perhaps one experience with one item is of any benefit to me. The skewed ratings posted on Yelp, Angie's List, and other on-line rating services speak volumes about the hazards of anonymous and risk-free ratings. Again, it seems that eBay is late to the opera.

I cannot imagine having some other persons cranky reviewer on MY ITEM PAGE!

We say that ebay has "sunk to a new low"  a dozen times a week but THIS TIME--I think they have gone so far over the line I would kick in to a GoFundMe to prosecute either ebay or the review giver IF it could be proven that this was WHY ebay is placing these on sellers pages.

I do wonder tho-if some one who sells in this category went digging to find out if only CERTAIN SELLERS are being targeted like this---would prove that ebasy is FAVORING some and TRASHING others--for what reason tho--that would be an interesting study.

Its sad that sellers feel the need to be constantly on the look out for being sabotaged by the very people they PAY to promote their items.

I have NEVER done an ebay review--and I never WILL.  I do leave reviews on Amazon but I might reconsider if leaving one would adversely affect an innocent seller of the same items.

Despicable doesn't even come close.

After reading this article (after I stopped ROTFLMAO) I felt compelled to assist my fellow sellers on ebay by reporting the review/feedback you quoted on all of the coins with that review. Only about half of the active listings for said coin even have a 1-5 star review. Is this a random choice of ebay? Who chooses which listings get an option of writing and ranking a review? There is an actual reason listed to report the review; “It includes feedback about the seller” This should keep someone in ebayville busy.

eBay is not really structured for product reviews.  Stupid idea on their part.

Product reviews should be for modern products not antiques and collectibles. Ebay should create two sites--one site for new goods and one site for used items. The current "one size fits all" policies do not work.

Product reviews should be limited to NEW items only (listed as New).

Man, I feel sorry for anyone who sells collectibles or jewelry on Ebay (or clothing for that matter).
We sell brand new electronics, and that is hard enough to deal with on this ridiculous site. We sell factory sealed, fully warrantied items, and people still claim "INAD", leave a bad review every now and then...I cannot even imagine the torture that a coin dealer must go through...wow

Once again, (and as usual) the one size fits all mentality that reflects in almost everything eBay management implements proves to be a strategic failure.

Why do we not have an UPVOTE button on here!!!!?????   SONNY YOUNG is spot on ( as are several others) and it IS completely inane for ebay to have "reviews"  of items that might be 100 years old---the ONLY place I can think of that does anything even remotely similar is Consumer Reports with used car ratings and even there the data is from many places and for very specific criteria.  Not from just one guy on the side of the road with a busted down 1977 K-Car.

Something else that occurred to me--how can we KNOW if a "review"  is posted on OUR items--and how can we get it REMOVED?

I frequently see Amazon reviews given under seller feedback and feedback given under reviews. Just because you don't like a book you got and want to review it, don't review it and give it 3 stars or less under my feedback! And seeing a 1 star under reviews because the seller took too long to ship is unfair to the future sales of that item.

Apparently eBay is trying to be in that game as well? Stupid since they don't seem to get anything right and their 'reviewers' will I'm sure be leaving reviews for the wrong seller, wrong product, and for things that have nothing to do with the product. Since ebay is lousy at correcting reviews/feedbacks I'm sure they will let incorrect reviews stand as written. So glad eCRATER will remove incorrect feedback.

Perhaps eBay will follow in Yelp's steps, and remove a rating IF YOU PAY THEM.

FEEbay - you and I are in the same boat. We too sell NIB electronics and still get liar buyers (I thought when it said WIRED it was really wireless, so I opened them and they WERENT wireless so here they are back) and SNAD (its not compatible with my no name cell phone).

While I THANKFULLY dont have this problem - there isnt a problem in the known universe that eBay doesnt cause (on their site at least - although with the last CEO and his white house buddy, Im not putting the nations problems past eBay either ...lol).

When your entire business runs on theft and deception - it cant/wont ever be any different.

On AMAZON - you know a REAL ecommerce platform - any product reviews in feedbacks get removed and vise versa. You cant leave a feedback that says how bad the item is. Its there to rate the sellers service not the item.

In reverse - you cant rate your seller in the product review section.

When they happen on Amazon, its fixed ASAP - its removed faster then you can name any Bill Clinton floozy.

On eBay ...yawn.... when they finish the next MBA meeting concerning HOW TO STEAL more from sellers, MAYBE they will look into it.

I expect fraud, theft and wrong doing from eBay ... doesnt everyone? (except tool)

Sellers have an option of not showing Product Ratings on their listings.

This setting is available on the ''Site Preferences'' page under ''Selling Preferences,'' where it is listed as ''Show product ratings on your listings, if available.''

The change does not affect existing listings, but only new listings created after the change is made.

OK, I give the Readers Comments ''by XXX'' graphics on this page a ''2'' on a scale of 1 to 2 ... I'd leave a ''1'' but I like blue icons ... it appears that 80% of eBay Members have abandoned Feedback and that soon eBay itself will abandon the exercise when it stops ''backdating'' non-Feedback.

How can any review of a used item be beneficial to anyone? Simply amazing that ebay thinks they can compete with Amazon with this ill concieved "feature".

eBay had a good run for 20 years. The market has changed, consumers have changed and competition has been created and eBay had not kept up.

R.I.P. eBay

We can't even go a week, without some stupid ebay mindless thing,

A review on one of our listings, vintage ray-ban SG  has absolutely no use, does not even represent the  item listed, and goes to a link of some other item that someone did a 3 word review on, a year ago, it does not match our item even one bit

Just another fine example of the Big ebay stupid idiots telling their team of minions what to do, do something do anything, anything to get us to payday on Friday.

As mentioned above by others, this will be just a tool for nasty sellers to rid themselves of those pesky competitors, and in the end all it will accomplish is less good sellers, and less money for ebay.

Good work ebay, but your still in business, there must be something more you can do to ruin your company, keep thinking, get more creative,

Apparently eBay has removed the FB on eBay item number: 351623877453, it now shows 5 stars.
