Is Facebook the Biggest Threat to eBay, Etsy and Craigslist?

By: Ina Steiner

This article suggests that Facebook is a threat to online marketplaces and classifieds sites. The evidence? Cnet reporter Ben Rubin appeared in an interview on CNBC discussing Facebook's ecommerce initiatives.

In the interview, available for viewing here, Rubin says Facebook is testing a marketplace but on a very small scale.

Last month, Facebook brought Buy Buttons to business pages. In February, we had reported on Facebook's new Sell features that allow Group members to add a description of what they're selling, add pricing, and set a pick-up/delivery location. Here's the latest help file on Facebook about selling in Groups

Rubin says that while people have been selling on Facebook Groups for years, it appears the company is going further by creating "consumer-to-consumer marketplaces" in two cities in Australia and New Zealand.

He said Facebook has already impacted Craigslist, and could be a threat to eBay as it "struggles" and "is lagging" in ecommerce. He also pointed to Facebook's login, calling it secured as opposed to Craigslist where it's more anonymized.

If you've seen any signs of a Facebook marketplace, let us know. Is Facebook the biggest threat to established online marketplaces?

EBay is the biggest threat to eBay. I listed a few items last night and the item specifics, the maximum of $4 shipping for a very heavy book, the picture requirements, etc, have made it so difficult and frustrating to sell on eBay that I just hate to do it. And then your item gets mixed in with thousands of relisted auctions making it hard for buyers it find it. Yeah, eBay stupidity is the biggest threat to eBay.

I doubt Facebook is a threat at all.  The biggest threat to Ebay is that Amazon has greatly expanded it's used items and the knock out punch would be if Amazon set up a site for auctions.

I agree with "alaska"; the greatest continuing threat to eBay comes from the cretins occupying the eBay executive suite ...

The eBay executive suite—where the incompetent mingle with the disingenuous, the unscrupulous, the malevolent and the outright criminal, and the just plain stupid … http://bit.ly/11F2eas

@ Alaska, "Ebay Stupidity Is The Biggest Threat To Ebay" would be just fabulous plastered across tee shirts, LOL! Love it.

Craigslist is still the "go-to" for local sells.  I've been selling to my neighbors through Craigslist and moving items that wouldn't sell on Ebay.  Facebook is late to the game.  And the "FB groups" requires that you JOIN the group and some groups are closed or picky about who joins the groups.

eBay is it's own threat.  Until they removed our non profit with 100% feedback over 12 years, we never would have thought of selling elsewhere.  But eBay did us a favor.  We now operate our own website selling with no fees and we use an app called equid on Facebook and it is giving us great results.  You can purchase products directly off a Facebook page and pay with Paypal checkout.  Thank you eBay for showing us how we can sell fee free and without fake DSR reviews.

I believe it is. I've made tons more in selling groups. I created genre based and sell/post accordingly and managed to kick ebay to the curb. No listing fees and still invoice and ship. PayPal protects both buyer and seller. What's there to not like? My groups have 20k plus members and we keep rules simple and admins on same page. We offer feedback threads and admins help resolve some issues but most likely send them to resolution center PayPal offers. So many more details but all in all, facebook is a threat regardless of being late in the game or not...

No. Ebay is the biggest threat to Ebay. They were untouchable til they threw out all their customers. Now that DW appears to be continuing in JD's footsteps amazon will continue to see double digit growth while ebay continues to fizzle out.

Yes it is .When people become accustomed to impulse buying then FB will grow in strength.I for one welcome the spontaneous buying option and will be working to make the most of this in the future.

Has anyone here tried "Close 5"?

They're advertising heavily in the LA/Orange County areas of Southern California.

Alaska says "EBay is the biggest threat to eBay."

Brilliant comment and this statement is an absolute fact. eBay management is either in denial or so bullheaded that they will bankrupt the company rather than own up to the fact that the changes that JD made have failed.

Running off many thousands of sellers who were also buyers and who then told family and friends how vile the company is (and continue to do so)----not smart eBay.

Facebook will have to change from an ego driven site where users talk about themselves and pay no attention to others.  I have tried to buy from facebook users, they are seldom serious enough to meet at the appointed time or place, many times they do not answer questions, I have given up.  I will stick with Craigslist for local sales....users know this is a sale site and are usually serious buyers and sellers.

Too many people who just like everything, constant offers I tried Facebook but seems like everyone is an expert, and knows more than you do about what you are selling, and they hit like every second even people from other countries hit like for local sales, and as someone said the groups are picky on who they let in,

Why do people get bent out of shape over relisted items?  The problem isn't that the items are relisted but that they had to be.  I have alot of inventory that's "unsellable" on eBay (and eCrater for that matter) but moves just fine, even at higher prices, elsewhere.

eBay makes ANY alternative a threat, through its own insane policies. Fees are profit-killers, and RISK adds to the sales load. Why wouldn't a seller avail himself of any other "ecommerce platform" especially if it's FREE and generates CASH sales?

Now, having a national/global market available is a plus and sellers will pay a reasonable fee structure for access to it. But, the DOUBLING of FVF's years ago, then the added insult of FVF's on shipping COST, makes their fees onerous. Virtually demanding that sellers accept the thieving PayPig - a "separate" co [yeah..whatever!] puts eBay at the bottom of sellers' list of choices.

@RIKTOYS

Yup, you have to relist, and re-relist, not b/c the item isn't needed or wanted by any buyers, but b/c eBay isn't generating the traffic. Even when I list a used item at 25/30c on the dollar compared to new, and have the lowest starting bid on that item type, I typically have to list it three times before a sale.

I would find it hard to think that FB is a threat to anything. I only drop in maybe once a week anymore. I think if anything Pinterest might be a bigger threat but I agree, eBay's biggest threat is looking at them in the mirror!
