The PayPal service is down, with users unable to login on Sunday morning and unable to make purchases. Reports are coming in to Ecommerce EKG as well as to DownDetector.
Because eBay offers shoppers little choice but to use PayPal on its marketplace, the outage is impacting it as well (reports are coming in to DownDetector for eBay as well as PayPal). Obviously other marketplaces such as Etsy as well as independent online merchants are also impacted if shoppers can't use their PayPal accounts to pay for purchases.
PayPal's site went down 8 weeks ago on October 4th (a Sunday afternoon) when it was down for about 3 hours - in that instance, eBay's site was also impacted by technical issues. PayPal and eBay blamed a power outage at a data center the two companies share.
Obviously PayPal's outage this morning is of great concern since it falls during the Black Friday - Cyber Monday extended holiday shopping weekend.
It's not certain if the outage impacts PayPal Debit Cards, so shoppers should have a backup payment method when leaving the house to buy gas, groceries, go shopping.
We will keep you posted, please stay tuned.
Update: PayPal appears to be back up. Please keep us posted on Ecommerce EKG and in the comments - thanks for the alerts this morning!
Update 11/30/15 8:50 am: PayPal is experiencing another outage this morning (Cyber Monday!) See new Ecommerce EKG report started this morning. |
