By: Ina Steiner

eBay is set to report fourth quarter earnings today, and the financial press are speculating on how well eBay performed.

The Street focused on currency and economic chaos in Europe in its report. "With recent turmoil surrounding central bank decisions such as the recent unexpected move from the Swiss Central Bank, and analysts are lowering forecasts all around."

The Motley Fool raised the issue of eBay's disappointing third quarter blamed on a strong dollar, the Google penalty and eBay's security breach and resulting password-reset.

It noted that eBay had planned "significant investments in sales and marketing to re-engage users" and advised shareholders to be on the lookout for "whether those investments are bearing fruit."

Online sellers will join analysts and investors in wondering whether eBay reveal will how its breakup plans are proceeding as it plans to split PayPal and eBay Marketplaces. Here's a refresher on eBay's third-quarter performance. We'll be bringing you Q4 results that eBay will be releasing at 4 pm EST.

Let us know how you think eBay performed in the all-important fourth quarter.

It doesn't matter anymore. Wall street and the anaylists are to ignorant to believe anything but the fairy dust that JD gives when he waves his wand.

eBay has been cooking up a huge batch of "fudge" in an attempt to make outgoing C Level management look better.

This will be the last holiday season for the outgoing one per centers before they begin looking for a new teat to suckle from so the numbers better look good'

Hey Ric:

Instead of 1%ers, we should really be calling them minus 99%ers, or -99pc/-99% or for the mathematically inclined 99i%, a truly more accurate image reflecting their distance from the rest of the world.

With 23 million dollars in the balance for one cracker jack CEO, I'm certain this will be the best performance report in the history of eBay...

Let's all put on our rose-colored glasses at 4pm EST...

Certainly, Wall Street already has them on just waiting...

Article states: eBay had planned "significant investments in sales and marketing to re-engage users...."

Is there any evidence that that was done? Outside of a couple of lame promotions, where was the marketing? Heck, if they did even half as much advertising as Progressive Insurance, people would be flocking to eBay.

The video on The Street site mentions the Etsy IPO as one source of concern for eBay, for what it's worth.

Bottom line to me is that online shopping has gone on for an entire generation now -- it's no longer a novelty.  User-friendliness has vastly improved too, and now  there are apps that weed through all the marketplaces to find best price. It's a race to the bottom for all venues at this point.  eBay could mitigate that to some degree by doing some advertising and evening the playing field, but instead they're hypnotized by idiotic money-grab foolishness like "Flip your phone FTW!" and giving their low-feedback-score corporate accounts and utterly horrible Chinese sellers preferred visibility.

This just ain't gonna end well. In the meantime, it's a real slog weaning off of eBay.  I'm frustrated with the slow sales on 11Main and Etsy, but I'm going to be stubborn about it and continue to pile on the listings in those places, as well as Amazon of course.
Also waiting for Rakuten approval, as if I have time for that. If I do get approved, I'll probably end up just tossing up a few redundant items so their email-bot won't feel hurt.

I literally laugh at them when they start that, and I ask them some very direct questions that normally leave them speechless.  The answers aren't on their script nor do they even understand the questions.

it does not matter who they place blame on as it is their own hand doing all the harm not the hack, not that the dollar is up, not the fact that the economy is bad,

pure and simple e bay thru its policies and costumer service, is what's wrong sellers do not trust the venue sellers are leaving by the thousands, weekly, policies say that sellers are defects, to e bay sellers are noise, search issues, rolling blackouts, unfair selling policies, no protection from fraud, among other issues causing e bay to go under, this should be the last year for ebay , thousands of blogs ebay has turned into the most hated site nothing but constant stress
the bigger they are the harder they fall!!

ebay means every buy against you

There is more than one exec getting those huge bonus' checks. I wonder all of those put together, how do they account for that? Aren't there other shareholders who are being cheated out of dividends. There is a whole group of execs leaving ebay, they are all getting huge golden parachutes and retention bonus checks? This is really a big pile of steaming bull....

"Aren't there other shareholders who are being cheated out of dividends."

eBay shareholders have never had a cash dividend; the "long" eBay shareholders have been effectively going backwards ever since the cretinous Johnny Ho was given the helm; it can only be surmised that those on the eBay Board are as incompetent as is demonstrably Johnny Ho and his band of hand-picked keystone kops...

But, never fear, the CFO of the year, Robert Swan, and his magical Enron spreadsheet will bring home the bacon to underpin all those retention payments ...

The eBay executive suite—where the incompetent mingle with the disingenuous, the malevolent and the outright criminal, and the just plain stupid ... http://bit.ly/11F2eas

This could be the beginning of the end.  Carl Icahn, remember him?  He could very well have set out to weaken Ebay by forcing the spin off of paypal.  With paypal out of the way Ebay will have no shield to hide behind.  The lower they sink, the easier it will be for a takeover.

“EBay to Cut 2,400 Jobs, and Weighs 2nd Spinoff”

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/01/22/technology/ebay-reports-10-incre
ase-in-earnings-but-auctions-lag.html

The sooner eBay spins off Johnny Ho and his gaggle of hand-picked mates the better chance eBay may have of recovering from its seven years of stagnation (compared to Amazon) under Johnny Ho direction …

“It’s going to get a little bit worse before it gets better,” says Bob Swan (all figures calculated on his old Enron spreadsheet); in the meantime, Swan and his mates in the eBay executive have had no trouble arranging obscene retention payments for themselves—all the while the eBay shareholders have received one not one penny in cash dividends …

And now there is talk of selling off eBay Enterprise?—an operation that was another of Johnny Ho’s delusional ideas that presumably came to him on one of his rare “thinking days” …

The trouble with the people currently running eBay is that none of them have any idea what their core market is; indeed, Johnny Ho has spent the past seven years trying to destroy eBay’s core market—what made eBay the great marketplace that it used to be—the “flea market”; now, as his attempts to convert eBay into an international online “Westfield Mall” has obviously failed, he decides to trumpet his “success” and announce his intention to depart—the sooner the better for all concerned! …

And don’t let Carl Icahn’s involvement fool you about PayPal’s prospects; with Apply Pay, MasterPass and Visa Checkout now in the mix, the clunky “PreyPal” too is approaching its “best by date” …

What a joke eBay Inc. has become …

@Patricia

Yes!  And about 6 months after the well-publicized feud between he and JD, JD ups and does what Carl proposed.  All seems shady and fishy to me - but not to any of the so-called experts?  None of the "analysts" ask tough questions, demand real answers instead of Valley boy speak, or dare peak behind the curtain.  They all keep each other propped up.  It makes me wonder if all of corporate America isn't just a house of cards that is supported by "dumb, deaf, and blind" analysts whose  purpose is to con investors and drive more dollars  into an empty system.
My fondest hope is that right now there is an investigation into the flim-flam called Ebay.

So, how many years has it been since the Bailouts for Bonus Bucks? The average consumer just doesn't have as much money to spend.

The 1%ers took it all.

You can't pin all of the blame on Ebay and think to find a venue that does anything inherently different than Ebay. The lot of these people truly believe that they are doing the right thing.

Our economic corruptions have been developing for over 30 years, and no one has the ability anymore to be able to see the forest because there are trees.

From another of Ina's posts that doesn't accept comments, I note JD's promise of "cost-cutting" which in practice means chopping 3,000 heads in India, Philipines, other Asian He// Holes, and flunkies in SJ and Colorado. IOW, gutting "customer service" that's already laughable, while JD & His Merry Men pull their Robbin' Hood act.
