Will eBay Make Things Right Following Shipping Label Outage?

Mondays are big shipping days for online sellers who accrue orders over the weekend, but for eBay sellers on Monday, the day was a bust if they relied on the marketplace's system for printing shipping labels.

eBay acknowledged the glitch on its systems announcement board 2 hours after the first report came in on Ecommerce EKG. According to eBay, the problem started around 10:30 am Eastern and it announced the problem resolved 10 hours later. "Customers experienced long loading times and/or received error messages when attempting to print shipping labels on eBay," it explained.

Sellers were worried about disappointing their customers, and also about the consequences to their eBay performance record which judges sellers harshly for shipping and delivery times.

"Any transaction defects or delays in uploading tracking that we can identify as resulting from this issue will not impact seller performance records," eBay wrote.

But as one seller wondered, would eBay reach out to the customers of sellers who were impacted and let them know a delay was eBay's fault? We asked eBay's spokesperson if it planned to do that but have not heard back.

Ebay does step up when Mother Nature gets in the way.  But on this one I'm not sure it lasted long enough to cause that.

I too had issues with it today.  It sure took me longer to get my shipping done, but I managed.  Not that I liked that any as I do have other things to do with my time.

However I don't know how a seller would prove they got a defect due to this.  You could still do labels, it just took a lot longer than normal.

Does anyone really thinks that Fleecebay cares about anything that happens to sellers.

Fleecebay has burped, coddled and changed the diapers of the buyers that they don't have time to burp the sellers.

Marie says " You could still do labels, it just took a lot longer than normal."

Marie, we could not print them at all, and it was down hours past our business hours. We tried printing from both eBay and PayPal throughout the day.

This is why this defect system is so ludicrous.  If eBay are going to hold sellers to ridiculous metrics, then their own systems and the third party systems that link with them should work flawlessly.

If eBay (SNADbay) wouldnt have created the stupid DEFECT system to start with, we wouldnt be having this discussion (each and every time).

The greater point is that eBay never learns from its mistakes.

To err is "human" even though JD is a pod person. eBay makes mistakes (has issues) but when it happens its a NON event. GOD HELP any seller who has any issues - for them is DEFECT CITY, with eBay management crackling in delight.

Delays happen. Even when there are no mistakes on either SNADbay or the sellers ends - sometimes its just USPS. But AGAIN, GOD help the poor seller, at the "mercy" of some deranged buyer who thinks that sellers control USPS (I get it all the time ... "cant you MAKE them (USPS) do XXXX?) (No I cant - no one can).

eBay will not make things "right", they never do. Its not that they are delighting in the errors, they just dont care. Why should they when they can just lay it on sellers?

Sellers know from previously broken eBay "promises" that "making it right" will occur for a limited number of sellers in cases where the buyers negative feedback specifically mentions the shipping delay. Other than that , sellers will be hard pressed to find eBay very helpful.

For future reference in cases where eBay or PayPal shipping modules are broken, here is the link to the backup shipping process in PayPal:

From
past experience, this shipping module works even when PayPal shipping is down.  You have to enter information manually, but at least you can still get orders shipped.

It did work...very slowly. I think it was taking about 10 minutes to print a label. Just left the window open, did some other stuff, came back, selected the mail class, came back, clicked buy postage, came back and printed. Very annoying...I had somewhere else to be last night

For me it was completely down for about 3 hours. I think Ebay's defect label is well beyond a 5 now.

"Any transaction defects or delays in uploading tracking that we can identify as resulting from this issue will not impact seller performance records," eBay wrote.

Unfortunately for small sellers, eBay will be unable to "identify" any of those defects.

To add to what Ric posted, I always use PayPal's MultiOrder Shipping program, and had no issues with that yesterday.

I thought I had it bad that I couldn't print labels for my ecrater store as my satellite network seemed to be hung up for several hours. Even if I had been able to print the postage, too much snow to wade through with a pile of packages and cane, so today at this point I have 11 outgoing packages.

Hahahahahahahaha! Yah, right! Luckily I had no sales over the weekend so it didn't affect me. I was in my 4 days of being invisible. 4 days visible and 4 days invisible, it's regular as clockwork these days. I would not expect them to ''find'' any problem on their end.

When I started selling on eBay five years ago something told me not to rely on anyone else but myself for shipping my merchandise. Man, am I glad I did that. I have been using Stamps.com since Day One and have never had to worry about shipping.

I did manage to print my labels. A process that takes under 30 minutes dragged on for over 2 hours. I don't trust ebay to protect my status. They have a difficult time keeping the current cut and paste tracking of shipments up to date as it stands. To me it is about my customers and if there were a way to get the items out, we were going to do it, even if it meant printing through USPS.com. The last thing I want to do is beg to have each one of several defects removed. Ebay managers are so arrogant they won't even send a note to the buyers they seem to have so much respect towards. If my computer goes down for a day, I end up paying a hefty price in defects, delays and low DSR's. Ebay's entire system goes down and they just fix it and pretend nothing happened. This is what makes sellers so angry; that Ebay does not hold itself to the same standard of service that it expects of their sellers. Very arrogant. Very unprofessional.

For the record, when the dust settles, I won't be surprised if ebay hangs it on the the sellers. I can already hear them ''you could have, you should have...you need a contingency plan...I understand but that is all we can do for you today. Thanks for selling on Ebay!''
