eBay CEO Gets Earful from Top Rated Seller at Annual Meeting

By: Ina Steiner

An eBay shareholder who also happens to be a Top Rated Seller asked eBay CEO John Donahoe and the board of directors why he was being punished for something outside of his control. The seller raised the question at the company's annual shareholder meeting in San Jose, California today.

The seller, named Dave, said he was a hobby seller (since 1998) with over 1500 positive feedback ratings who listed things around his house, from laptops and hard drives to coins, baseball cards and bobbleheads.

He said he would lose his TRS status in August due to new tracking requirements that will require TRS sellers to upload tracking on 90% of their shipments. Dave said he places his lightweight items into USPS First Class envelopes along with a tracking bar code, but the Postal Service won't scan them.

"I think everybody in this room probably does not think that anybody should be punished for things over which they have no control. I have no control over the Postal Service."

The seller suggested eBay make an exception to the tracking requirement for small, lightweight items that the Postal Service won't scan, perhaps for items that are four ounces or less or for domestic shipping where flat rate shipping costs less than $3.

"I'm sure there are thousands just like me," he said, and it would benefit buyers as well.

Donahoe thanked the seller for his suggestion and said "I'm certain Devin (Wenig) and his team will take it."

The tracking requirement was first announced in 2012, when sellers of lightweight items like postage stamps, coins, ephemera, labels, etc., said the requirement would make it impossible to sell those inexpensive, lightweight items on eBay.

It's rare, though not unheard of, for eBay sellers to use the company's annual shareholder meeting to talk about challenges they face and make suggestions to the top executives gathered there.

Also new this year - after the formal voting (everything went eBay's way, including the rejection of a shareholder proposal) and a presentation by John Donahoe, Rev. Jesse Jackson was allowed to make a statement calling for tech companies to take action to promote diversity, part of the Rainbow Push Coalition's "digital inclusion initiative."

Rev. Jackson called out Silicon Valley firms for the lack of diversity on their boards and C-Suites (chief officers), and in their financial transactions, advertising and professional services.

Donahoe pointed to the challenge of diversity when hiring engineers, though I'm not sure how many eBay board members and senior executives are actually engineers. He pointed to eBay's Girls Who Code initiative and said he would spend time with Rev. Jackson after the meeting.

Girls Who Code ?

Ebay is an irrelevant mess.

That TRS will sortly be "no longer a registered user". Ebay will silence any malcontents who do not go along with the party line of "Do as we say, not as we do"

Regarding the seller/shareholder - I'm sure that was a curve ball for Donuthole as his response was anything but.  As far as being able to actually ask a question, far more seller/shareholders should go to the meeting to do the exact same thing....the last thing they want is for sellers issues to actually be brought up at this meeting.
Regarding the Girls Who Code comment:  I'm sure Donuthole has ''binders full of women''....who code.

I don't get it. Why is this guy complaining to Donahoe about this? This is a postal service issue. They are supposed to scan all packages with tracking, whether it's 2 ounces or 2 pounds. We have never had an issue with this, either. He needs to contact his post office and go further up the USPS food chain if they won't follow standard operating procedure. I think the bigger issue here is calling someone a TRS who sells probably 100 cheaply priced items per year.

If Ina knows what this shareholder's user ID is, it would be interesting to track the seller and see if ebay exterminates Dave.

Of all the issues that could have and should been raised, this one would have been last on my list.

Does no one question whether they're getting their money's worth with this CEO and his hand pick crew of seller eating sharks?

This is just reason why ebay is such a monumentally bad investment. Incompetent mediocrity at best or worst depending on your perspective.

Sellers have zero reason for being optimistic simply because a Top Rated Seller gave voice to the hues and cries of the poor eBay selling masses.

John Donahoe discontinued eBay Live events so that he could avoid any contact with eBay sellers.

Just because Mr Donahoe was compelled by virtue of a public meeting to hear a Top Rated Seller's "noise" does not mean that he or anyone else in charge at eBay will "listen" to it or take action to reverse it.

Donahoe and the rest of his hand picked MBA's are notoriously oblivious when it comes to sellers pointing out the "defects" in eBay policy. Their job has become one of creating defect traps that are designed to punish eBay's best sellers simply because management's opinion is that they have too many great sellers.

Another half baked update from the clown car management at Ebay and they got embarrassed at the shareholder meeting. Truth is they don't know what they are doing.....losing so many good sellers. I would note that Ebay's web traffic is flat to down and Bonanza traffic is sharply up.

A combination of good old incompetence, with healthy doses of disingenuousness, unscrupulousness and criminality is the name of the eBay game—this narrative would surely bring a smile to the face of George Orwell …

I’ve been “libeling” this bunch of crooks all over the internet for the past six years or so, and they could easily track me down (as others have done), if they chose, as I comment using my real name and my email address is noted in my primary rant on eBay’s alleged criminal activities.

eBay could bury me in lawyers if they chose but not a word from eBay or their lawyers have I ever heard, nor has my eBay account been affected (then I am only an occasional buyer).
Then, maybe their lack of action has got something to do with the fact that the criminal activity that it is alleged they are knowingly and calculatedly involved in (endemic fraud on buyers at nominal-start auctions) is so easily demonstrable.

But, the even greater disgrace of the matter is that no one in any authority will do anything to even stop eBay facilitating this massive ongoing fraud on consumers, let alone criminally prosecute them for knowingly facilitating same.

Still, it informs you where your government’s true loyalties lay—not with the hoi polloi …

eBay Inc, where the incompetent mingle with the malevolent and the criminal ... http://bit.ly/11F2eas

Empty suit. And like Annie stated, smug.

My guess is that he knows absolutely nothing about tracking requirements and postal scans.

Don't really care who the TRS is that talked about his shipping issues, BUT I am curious as all heck about whomever that other ebay shareholder/seller was that...''congratulated eBay on its new seller procedures, and said he's been a seller ''forever,'' and he's ''never had it so easy to sell.''

Maybe it really is the water up there...

Where does that appear in this article.  I somehow over looked it.  I reread the article, but I don't see the comment.  Obviously they really can't be a very active seller or they would never make such a statement.

@Marie In the main article. You are reading the blog.

@mjr55 You said "They are supposed to scan all packages with tracking, whether it's 2 ounces or 2 pounds" which is true. However if you are selling a postcard or stamp you would not normally send first class package at triple the cost of plain old letter rate, which does not come with tracking.

This is a cost which would have to be passed onto the buyer, would inflate eBay's take and probably kill the sale

Gee...it wouldn't surprise me that Ebay planted fluffers in the shareholder question and answer
part of the meeting. Garbage in and garbage
out is the Ebay way of management.
