Amazon.com Announces First Quarter Sales up 23% to $19.74 Billion

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) today announced financial results for its first quarter ended March 31, 2014.

Operating cash flow increased 26% to $5.35 billion for the trailing twelve months, compared with $4.25 billion for the trailing twelve months ended March 31, 2013. Free cash flow increased to $1.49 billion for the trailing twelve months, compared with $177 million for the trailing twelve months ended March 31, 2013. Free cash flow for the trailing twelve months ended March 31, 2013 includes cash outflows for purchases of corporate office space and property in Seattle, Washington, of $1.4 billion.

Common shares outstanding plus shares underlying stock-based awards totaled 476 million on March 31, 2014, compared with 471 million one year ago.

Net sales increased 23% to $19.74 billion in the first quarter, compared with $16.07 billion in first quarter 2013. Excluding the $10 million favorable impact from year-over-year changes in foreign exchange rates throughout the quarter, net sales grew 23% compared with first quarter 2013.

Operating income decreased 19% to $146 million in the first quarter, compared with $181 million in first quarter 2013. The favorable impact from year-over-year changes in foreign exchange rates throughout the quarter on operating income was $18 million.

Net income increased to $108 million in the first quarter, or $0.23 per diluted share, compared with $82 million, or $0.18 per diluted share, in first quarter 2013.

“We get our energy from inventing on behalf of customers, and 2014 is off to a kinetic start,” said Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com. “Our device team launched Fire TV, offering great content, including our recently announced exclusive deal with HBO, and innovative features like unified voice search, which we’re delighted is being adopted by so many new partners, including Netflix, HBO Go, Hulu Plus, Crackle and Showtime Anytime. The team is working hard to keep Fire TV in stock. Our retail team launched Prime Pantry, a new option available only to Prime members offering exclusive access to everyday essentials in non-bulk sizes — ranging from breakfast foods and popular soft drinks, to cleaning and personal care items. And, our AWS team significantly lowered prices on EC2, S3 and RDS, saving AWS customers hundreds of millions of dollars over the next several months alone.”

Highlights
Amazon introduced Fire TV, a tiny box that plugs into your HDTV for easy and instant access to Netflix, Prime Instant Video, Hulu Plus, WatchESPN, Showtime Anytime, low-cost video rentals, and much more, offering an open ecosystem of over 200,000 movies and TV episodes. Fire TV also provides access to games from EA, Disney, Gameloft, Mojang, 2K, Amazon Game Studios, and more. The device offers voice search (that actually works!) to instantly find movies and TV shows, as well as the new ASAP feature which predicts the movies and TV episodes customers will want to watch and prepares them for playback.

Amazon announced that HBO Go will become available for Fire TV, targeting a launch by year-end.

With the launch of Fire TV, Amazon released new developer tools that allow developers to quickly and easily optimize PC, console or Android mobile apps and games for the new Fire TV. The new tools include sample code, as well as documentation and guidelines to help developers design and build living room experiences, including how to manage the input for the Fire game controller and Fire TV remote.

Amazon Game Studios introduced Sev Zero, the Studios’ first game built from the ground up for Fire TV. Sev Zero combines a fast-action third-person shooter experience with the calculated strategy of tower defense gameplay for a fun, big screen experience.

Amazon announced that video streams on Prime Instant Video nearly tripled year over year.

Amazon announced a content licensing agreement with HBO, making Prime Instant Video the exclusive online-only subscription home for select HBO programming, including The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, The Wire, Big Love, Deadwood, Eastbound and Down, Family Tree, Enlightened, Treme, early seasons of Boardwalk Empire and True Blood, as well as mini-series like Band of Brothers, John Adams, and more. The first wave of content will arrive on Prime Instant Video May 21.

In addition, Prime Instant Video is now the exclusive online-only subscription home for FOX’s 24, BBC America’s Orphan Black, FX’s The Americans, and MTV’s Teen Wolf.

Amazon introduced Prime Instant Video for the U.K. and Germany, offering thousands of popular movies and TV episodes available for unlimited streaming to Prime members. Prime members also continue to receive unlimited One-Day Delivery on millions of items and access to 500,000 Kindle books to borrow from the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library.

Amazon Studios greenlit six original pilots for full seasons available exclusively to Prime members — The After, Bosch, Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street, Mozart in the Jungle, Transparent and Wishenpoof! will become the next Amazon Original Series following rave customer reviews of the pilot episodes. In addition, Garry Trudeau’s political series Alpha House will return for a second season.

Amazon Studios announced it has greenlit two new pilots — the half hour dramatic comedy The Cosmopolitans, from Whit Stillman, and the one hour drama Hand of God from Executive Producers Marc Forster, Ben Watkins, Ron Perlman, Brian Wilkins and Jeff King — for its third pilot season debuting later this year on Amazon Instant Video.

Amazon now offers U.S. fulfillment center tours open to the public. Visit www.amazon.com/fctours for information on available tour locations, dates and times.

Amazon introduced Prime Pantry, a new service available only to Prime members offering exclusive access to low-priced everyday essentials in everyday sizes. Available nationally, Prime customers can buy as much or as little as they want and have items conveniently delivered to their home. Selection includes popular soft drinks and bottled water, a new range of paper and laundry products in popular pack sizes, single boxes of breakfast cereal, potato chips, convenience-sized personal care products and more. There’s a flat $5.99 delivery fee per Prime Pantry box.

Amazon introduced Dash, an easy-to-use shopping device that allows Prime Fresh customers, and their families, to effortlessly shop hundreds of thousands of items — ranging from groceries to household essentials — from anywhere in their home without having to browse the AmazonFresh website or app. Dash works directly with a customer’s AmazonFresh account — simply scan items or say the items you want and Dash finds it for you using voice search that actually works.

Amazon Fashion and Shopbop are joining with Vogue and Born Free, a private sector-led initiative with the sole objective of ending mother-to-child HIV transmission by December 31, 2015, to create the Born Free Collection. Amazon Fashion will sponsor the launch event and support the initiative through on-site messaging and social programming. The collaboration, featuring pieces for both women and children from 22 notable female designers, is based on the works of Kenyan-born, New York-based visual artist Wangechi Mutu and is available exclusively on Shopbop. All profits from sales of the Collection will benefit Born Free.

Amazon introduced Flow to the Amazon app for iPhone. Flow offers customers a convenient way to search for products they need to restock in their home without typing, scanning a barcode or taking a photo — simply move your phone over packaged goods you need to restock and the Amazon app recognizes the products and saves them in your search history, where they can be added to the shopping cart or saved for later.

The launch of Amazon Student on Amazon.co.uk was announced, offering students six months of free Prime One-Day Delivery on millions of items, including books, laptops, housewares, kitchen equipment and more. At the end of the six-month free trial, students can convert to a discounted Amazon Prime membership for just £39 per year — less than half the standard cost of Amazon Prime.

Amazon.in continued its rapid pace of category expansion, launching apparel, shoes, video games, music, luggage & bags, health & personal care, and sports, fitness and outdoors stores.

Amazon Publishing announced the launch of a new German-language publishing program under the Amazon Publishing umbrella. The European Amazon Publishing team will acquire German-language fiction for publication in Kindle and print editions available on Amazon.

Amazon announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire comiXology, the company that revolutionized the digital comics reading experience with their immersive Guided View technology and makes discovering, buying, and reading comic books and graphic novels easier and more fun than ever before. The acquisition is expected to close in the second quarter of 2014.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced its 42nd price reduction, lowering prices for Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) by an average of 51 percent, reducing Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) prices by up to 40 percent and lowering Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS) prices by an average of 28 percent. To help customers continue to optimize their costs, AWS also introduced Cost Explorer, with advanced reporting, analytics and visualization tools that allow customers to easily view their costs, analyze trends and identify spending patterns.

AWS announced that all four of AWS’s infrastructure Regions in the U.S., including AWS GovCloud (U.S.), have received a Department of Defense (DoD) Provisional Authorization, which recognizes the ability of AWS to meet the stringent security and compliance requirements to run DoD applications. This certification simplifies and speeds the process for DoD agencies to evaluate and adopt AWS, allowing more DoD agencies to use AWS’s secure, compliant infrastructure.

AWS continued to expand the AWS Activate program, which helps startups launch and quickly scale their businesses on AWS. With AWS credits, training, support, forums, and exclusive offers from AWS partners, AWS Activate makes it easy for new companies to join some of the world’s fastest-growing startups who use AWS.

AWS announced the broad availability of Amazon WorkSpaces, a fully managed desktop computing service in the cloud that allows end-users to access the documents, applications and resources they need with the device of their choice.

AWS announced the broad availability of Amazon AppStream, a service that allows developers to stream resource-intensive applications, such as 3D games or interactive HD applications, from the cloud to a broad range of devices.

Financial Guidance
The following forward-looking statements reflect Amazon.com’s expectations as of April 24, 2014, and are subject to substantial uncertainty. Our results are inherently unpredictable and may be materially affected by many factors, such as fluctuations in foreign exchange rates, changes in global economic conditions and consumer spending, world events, the rate of growth of the Internet and online commerce, and the various factors detailed below.

Second Quarter 2014 Guidance

Net sales are expected to be between $18.1 billion and $19.8 billion, or to grow between 15% and 26% compared with second quarter 2013.

Operating income (loss) is expected to be between $(455) million and $(55) million, compared to $79 million in second quarter 2013.

This guidance includes approximately $455 million for stock-based compensation and amortization of intangible assets, and it assumes, among other things, that no additional business acquisitions, investments, restructurings, or legal settlements are concluded and that there are no further revisions to stock-based compensation estimates.

A conference call will be webcast live today at 2 p.m. PT/5 p.m. ET, and will be available for at least three months at www.amazon.com/ir. This call will contain forward-looking statements and other material information regarding the Company’s financial and operating results.

Not tomorrow - we have scheduled a top tier management meeting in the boardroom.

All managers will bring their iPhones, iPods, iTabs, Droids, Blackberries and other personal electronic devices to the meeting where they will be used in communicating the latest plan to rule the e-commerce world!

Talking and other forms of verbal communication (burps, grunts, whistles, snorts, laughs) are similarly prohibited from employment.

We will use these devices in order to understand the mindset of our customers, the sellers - er - buyers on our flagging eBay platform. Extra credit will be given for those who can come up with a solution for employing the following devices in mobile e-commerce:

1. Radio Shack TRS-80
2. Sony Walkman
3. Atari 2600
4. Eniac

If we do not come up with a suitable solution which is incomprehensible to the average CSA and is totally non-sequitor to the seller community, the next step will be to intiate mandatory thinking days.

To this end, I have taken an option on some acreage at the former Minidoka WRA Relocation camp where all of you will be placed in a solitary environment until your thinking sentences are over.
I will also be joining you there as a token of support.

There will be a small contemplative garden constructed for meditation. Flagellation devices and hair shirts will be encouraged - check the latest listings on eBay, but only buy from sellers who offer free and immediate shipping so as not to damage their Top Gun, er, Top Rated status.

Yours in desire,

JD

pace306, it does seem that Donahoe's ''disruptive innovation'' has turned eBay into a ghost town of buyers, and it does seem that all that they can do is point the finger at the sellers.

I guess that ''if we build the Chinese Walmart they will come'' initiative just didn't work out.   eBay used to be a fun place to shop and sell, and their offerings were unique and not to be found elsewhere. Now, if anything unique is left on the website it can't be found due to search that is manipulated by eBay to hide listings for certain sellers and funnel buyers to those who eBay management deem to be worthy of selling on eBay (big box retailers and the Chinese).

A C-player executive with a lot of thinking days and no original ideas came in and ruined a good thing.  Don't point your finger at the sellers boys, this is your creation.  Clearly nobody really needs what is on your site, and if they do, they'll go down to Walmart or Target to purchase it.

Yeah, “Thinking Days” …

eBay’s Johnny Ho on “thinking days” (LinkedIn, Jul 2013)

http://www.linkedin.com/today/post/article/20130715110232-18739943
3-to-beat-the-chaos-take-a-thinking-day

This is a “must read” for anyone wanting a measure of eBay’s senior management; and, just to whet your appetite, a couple of Ho quotes therefrom …

“I just finished one of my thinking days last month. I filled a white board with my assessment of the external market and how we were doing against our priorities for the first six months of this year. As frequently happens, once I had written everything out in one place, I found it useful to step back and look at things from a holistic perspective. I emerged with new insights and with greater clarity about what’s most important. To remind myself of these insights, I wrote them out, as I always do, into my personal priorities file and now carry this file with me everywhere I go.”—John Donahoe, LinkedIn (15 Jul 2013)

“Last year, for example, when I took an extended vacation as part of our company’s sabbatical program, I had some pretty transformational thoughts about reconnecting to our company’s purpose and setting ourselves on a good-to-great journey. I came back to work not just rested, but with more clarity and more conviction than I’ve had in years. This allowed me to share these transformational thoughts with our entire company which has re-energized our team and made me a more effective leader.”—John Donahoe, LinkedIn (15 Jul 2013)

And, if you need any further insight into the workings of Johnny Ho’s febrile brain, try reading the transcript of his rambling September 2007 Legg Mason “Thought Leader Forum” interview at http://bit.ly/16McqO1 where he lays out his plans for the future of eBay. Don’t miss the doodling illustrations by Sente—they too are telling. (And for anyone with sufficient staying power to read the whole interview, eBay is offering an internship as PA to the Ho—in the adjoining eBay Dept of Spin, of course …)

"Even though people think I'm an expert at technological innovation, my own instinct for technology was frozen in place in 1982." - John Donahoe (26 Sep 2007) ...
[On the first part, who could have possibly thought that? On the second, a few of the only true words that Johnny Ho has ever spoken ... http://bit.ly/YvxFEg]

Rexford :)

The problem with JD's disruptions is, that when you purposely set fires, a good portion of the time they burn out of control - which is exactly whats going on here.

Your comments are %100 correct (to me anyway), JD's plans have (to use the same metaphor) all gone up in smoke.

It's understanding that JD wanted to change eBay (from a revenue perspective) from one that relied on "granny's attic sellers" to "real merchants offering real product" as to increase eBay's revenues. That in itself would have been fine, but a case of severe Amazon envy and 20 or so "MBA geniuses" took it way to far and it of course ...imploded.

First they started courting manufacturers to sell directly on eBay. But the manufacturers shied away from eBay - they knew then what we know now - eBay is an abysmal partner. If they will lie to us (their user base) they will lie to them as well.

That was fine until 1) they used VERO to kick off sellers of those products and law suits (like mine that never actually went ahead (threats on paper did the trick)) 2) the "flavor" of eBay started getting lost when unique dealers disapeared.

eBay even had to eat crow to let buy aka buy.com aha Rakuten in as a seller. The huge FVFs couldnt be resisted. LMAO since Rakuten up n left then high and dry 2 yrs ago.

eBay has no other tricks up its sleeve since it produces nothing, doesnt know how ecommerce works, all it knows that if theres no business - it must be the sellers fault. After all, the 20 MBAs said so, right?

eBay has a severe problem with plain old maintenance - ie CS etc. Dealing with eBay if you must is a traumatic experience since thy use the cheapest and worst companies (people like Lithium) to provide those services. When you hang up with eBay you feel SLIMY and used.

Now J&R is gone and soon possibly others - so now what? what does toning down the DSR rate do? Instead of finding new sellers to replace the big guys, all they do is run them off to Amazon and to whom ever else has a site.

Try buying a Sony DSLR off eBay. WHen/if it breaks .. .SONY says "STFU for buying it on eBay". THAT is a problem JD has never figured out how to deal with - and taking my %20 wont change that. THAT buyer will NEVER come back.

3 yrs ago eBay had a huge booth at CES in Vegas. They courted any and every seller. They gave out tshirts, lanyards, had girls hanging out all over - didnt do anything. (want my lanyard?)

2 yrs ago eBay showed up again, in a MUCH SMALLER booth tucked in a corner in the North Hall with all the self styled electronics trans-shippers. eBays sign said "Manufacturers - Let you accounts sell on eBay!". Wanna guess how well that went over? If you said "like a lead balloon" YOU win the prize. Manufacturers HATED it, they laughed and they all have in their contracts (even little pisher companies that make cellphone cases ... NO EBAY SALES". So THAT was money well spent.

This last year, eBay didnt even bother to show up. They backed out in the end and had ZERO presence.

LMAO - "did see that comming did ya?"

Now that the bribery to get manufacturers has ended (they are now so few and far between that its laughable), he funds used to buy "deals of the day" has run out, Vero has had to scramble after being caught red handed taking money from rights via verowatch.com to kick sellers ... so now what?

If you are Amazon, you continue to try, to innovate, to expand. If you are eBay? You screw your best class of sellers and force them to take 90-180 day returns (to help put them OOB).

Im sure the upcoming FALL Seller Update will be worse then this one - and Ive said many times that eBay has alot of very bad ideas for sellers just waiting to be unleashed (like one that says sellers must be responsible for the warranty of the item sold for the life of the product).

The "we are only a venue" line apparently only fooled the courts in Paris - here in the US they can put ANYTHING in the TOS, and because they "know" no one will sue - they have carte blanche to do what they wish at will. "Dont like it? Dont sell on eBay!".

I dont put much stock into 11main.com, but I do into Amazon.com - and THAT is where I suggest anyone who can, shift to. They arent perfect by any means but they are otivated - to make Amazon.com the best selling platform it can be, while eBay devotes itself to just emptying your wallet by lieing, cheating and stealing from you when ever they can, and thats not much of a business plan is it?

Every time eBay rolls out another seller killing change, they attempt to justify the squeeze down by saying the changes will benefit sellers.

This dog and pony act is not fooling sellers and has certainly not improved the lot of buyers as ebay has purported.

Brain Burke claims that buyers who leave neutral and negative feedback are less likely to return to eBay. Taking him at his word, then how does he justify the fact that one of eBay's preferred sellers shows they have disappointed over 3,000 buyers just in the past 12 months?

300 of eBay's worst rated small sellers combined do not generate that many neutral and negative buyer experiences.

Meanwhile, all Messers Burke and Donahoe are focused on is beating small sellers with a stick, and blaming small sellers for ebay's inability to attract buyers and grow sales.

eBay's new search engine is an unmitigated disaster and does little to make searching on eBay a pleasurable experience. Is this the fault of small sellers too?

eBay's display of estimated delivery dates which were completely out of touch with reality this holiday season has disrupted more eBay buyers than can be counted. All 3 major carriers experienced previously unheard of delays in deliveries, due to a combination of weather challenges and short sighted staffing to save money. Are sellers to be blamed for eBay failing to set REALISTIC buyer expectations with the time frames they chose to display?

eBay management is long overdue for a reality check.

eBay's many problems are not exclsuively the fault of small sellers.

eBay's many problems can find their roots in the decision and policy making process of the out of touch MBA's who have failed miserably in their attempts to grow sales.

Their ongoing persecution of small sellers is going to accelerate the exodus of those sellers from eBay. As sellers leave, eBay's merchandise diversity declines. And, as eBay's merchandise diversity declines, buyers will throw their hands up in the air because they can not find what they came to eBay to buy.

It is too late for this management team to comprehend this simple concept.

Management's disconnect has been and continues to be so complete, that eBay will find it impossible to meet growth targets even when those targets are adjusted downward.

There needs to be a complete house cleaning of the C Level cubicles in San Jose in order for eBay to have a chance at bailing themselves out of the hole the current management team keeps digging deeper and deeper.

Sorry, Amazon as a 3P selling site is not the answer for wannabe Ebay refugees. The A-z claims is major source of fraud for 3P sellers. You will lose your merch and your payment on an A-z claim and Amazon enables this.
Want it for free ?  File an A-z claim get your money back and keep the item.
Scammers know this.....

Amazon figures you'll put up with a certain amount of fraud to sell on Amazon. Besides the UPC codes requirement and the horrible
seller interface. I am not a fan of Amazon
for 3P selling.  BTDT.

Amazon stinks as bad as ebay, in a different way, They short sellers on shipping, force returns, and have a one-sided A-Z policy.
Amazons prices aren't that great either because of the Huge commission extracted from sellers.

Amazon is absolutely horrible for 3P sellers too....IME.
A-z claims ( can be initiated for anything / complaints about  "punctuation" in the description)
automatically defrauds sellers of their merch and their payment.
You lose everything and get dinged....for your efforts.
Amazon enables this scam and considers it a cost of doing business on Amazon.
Furthermore the UPC codes on everything are a pain and the seller interface is definitely not friendly to use.
The most interesting thing I observed :
Amazon uses your sales metrics to identify hot selling products and then they start to sell the same products.
Next thing you know Amazon is your competitor.
Ebay is headed in the same direction......because Amazon keeps delivering higher sales every quarter but not on the backs
3P sellers . Everything is getting rigged on the 3P sites.......people get wise, standalone
web site is the only answer with good seo.

Not sure why some sellers are having a problem with the A-Z thing. I don't. My sales are way up this month at Amazon and the more I list there, the more sales. Very happy that I started selling there again three years ago to supplement ecrater sales.

I buy and sell on Amazon and am a Amazon Vine reviewer and don't have problems in either direction in my use of Amazon. I'm glad that they are doing so well and ebay in in the toilet where they deserve to be.
