Amazon launched a new 1-hour delivery service in Manhattan on Thursday that will extend to additional cities in 2015. "Amazon Prime Now" lets members of its Prime Shipping program order from a selection of tens of thousands of products and receive them within an hour for $7.99. They can also select a 2-hour window delivery and pay no shipping at all.
Presumably Amazon Prime Now includes products from third-party merchants who use FBA - we've got a question in to Amazon to clarify this point.* If so, that would be a pretty open program for sellers depending on what they are selling. Amazon includes electronics and toys in Prime Now, but other categories in the program such as health & beauty are gated - Amazon only allows pre-approved sellers to list in those categories.
But now that Amazon launched its own brand of "everyday essentials" called Amazon Elements, even the big name brands may be nervous about Prime Now.

On Tuesday, eBay differentiated its same-day delivery service by adding 80 small businesses in Brooklyn to the eBay Local program. "They will offer delivery and/or in-store pickup (ISPU) to Brooklyn shoppers through eBay's website and mobile apps."
Tom Allason, Senior Director of eBay's Local initiatives, said eBay has been testing last mile options for over a year. "We kicked off the program with a focus on large retailers to scale the program. Now we want to provide the same opportunities to small businesses, who are the core sellers on eBay."
eBay Local is a pilot program for "last mile" solutions for buyers and sellers. It includes same-day delivery, scheduled delivery, in-store pickup. It's available in five markets in the U.S.: New York (including Brooklyn and Queens), San Francisco and parts of the Peninsula, San Jose, Dallas and Chicago, and there are eBay Local programs in the U.K., Germany, and Australia.
In the UK, eBay sellers of any size can participate in the Click & Collect in-store pickup program, with certain requirements.
So which company's same-day delivery service will be more democratic for small sellers? Or will both programs hamstring smaller online-only merchants who can't promise such speedy delivery?
Update 12/18/14: An Amazon spokesperson told EcommerceBytes, "We do not offer 3P products at this time, but the service is just getting started." |
