The Postal Service kicked off the holiday shipping season today by announcing that it will be delivering packages seven days a week in major cities and high volume areas starting Nov. 17 through Christmas Day.
The USPS is expecting double-digit package volume growth during the busy holiday shipping season, it said.
We asked if there was a way for online merchants to find out which zip codes would receive 7-day delivery. Spokesperson Katina Fields said the decision to deliver on Sundays takes place at the local level. "Due to package growth, particularly during the holiday season, the Postal Service will deliver packages in high-volume locations to keep the network clear and moving."
She added, "However due to volume projections it will likely be taking place in most U.S. cities during the holiday season."
In Thursday's announcement, Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said, "The Postal Service will be out making deliveries every single day during the holiday season, including Christmas Day. During the holidays, no carrier makes more deliveries to more places than the Postal Service, and this year, we're raising the bar with enhanced tracking and Sunday delivery." |
