PayPal Experiences Outage Sunday Afternoon

PayPal is experiencing an outage that began Sunday afternoon, worrisome to merchants as the holiday shopping season gears up - and Sundays are a particularly popular time for online shoppers. (See the latest updates at the bottom of this post.)

PayPal informed developers it was experiencing a system issue" that may be affecting PayPal APIs and PayPal Website on the PayPal Live Site." PayPal's initial report was posted at on Nov 2, 2014 at 3:38 PM EST and was followed up with a report at 4:14 PM EST that said it had restored partial functionality:

"There is still some impact to PayPal APIs and PayPal Website . We are continuing our investigation and will update with additional details."

A reader created a report on Ecommerce EKG: " Cannot log in at all "Sorry - your last action could not be completed." Comments on IsItDownRightNow show similar problems. We were unable to login in to our account at 4:50 pm ET.

Update: Twitter is abuzz. PayPal posted on Twitter, "We are aware that some users are experiencing issues viewing the PayPal website and are addressing the issue."

R-rated comments include this milder, "customers cannot pay for items they are purchasing,(more than just "problems viewing the website" for the past hour...)"

Update: PayPal has posted, "This issue has been resolved as of Nov 2, 2014 05:00 PM EST."

Update: A PayPal spokesperson provided us with the following statement on Monday morning: "We know that some of our customers may have had issues paying with PayPal for a short time today. We have resolved the problem and encourage anyone who was unable to make a payment to try again. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused."

22.00 hrs here in the UK and you cannot checkout on ebay.co.uk using Paypal as a payment method.
Way to go, not much of a positive experience for buyers and sellers alike if payment cannot be made.

I'm guessing PP is hacked beyond all recognition and buyers join the boycott 11/18/14 to never use paypal again.

"Ft. Knox" is swiss cheese.

It's probably just a coincidence, but it seems like ever since the announcement PayPal was splitting from eBay there's been one issue after another. One seller I know has not been able to print a PayPal label in any browser for a week.

Paypal is a very well run company, so I'm sure they'll be fine. Paypal's upper management has always recognized that Paypal is a great concept, but a simple concept; so they've always left it alone and not ruined it with unneeded changes.

Of course Ebay is also a great concept and a simple concept, but Ebay has lacked smart people at the top for years and they've ruined Ebay's growth and selling on ebay, with completely unneeded and unpopular changes.

Overall I have had few problems using Paypal other than it being required which is a huge issue. However with that being said, once David Marcus left and Donahoe stepped in as interim CEO, Paypal is going to 180 day returns Nov. 18th and who knows what other disruptions he created. Just watch where you are stepping where Donahoe has been because it smells to high heaven and difficult getting off your shoes.

So why is it that Sundays always seem to be the day when the major problems happen on ebay and now Paypal? Both sites should close down if unable to handle the supposed volume on a Sunday let alone the advancing holiday season. There is a lot more going on then just system overload.

Maybe its Boycott Deflection Shield was mounted backwards.

Hmmm ... the idea that PayPal has few issues is suspect. Two personal friends who are eBay Power Listers had their PayPal accounts hacked and drained coincidental to eBay's outage / password change / what-me-worry? episode in mid-September.

I had a UK buyer attempt to purchase an item from me with a payment from PP. I can only assume that the reason that I received no payment was it was during this time frame that they tried to purchase something. Lost sale most likely because once someone goes away with an unpaid item at ecrater they rarely come back to finish the payment. At least here we don't have to cjump through hoops to get a FVF refunded since there isn't one like at ebay.

I called PayPal on October 1, 2014, about a transaction that Boanaza showed as "paid" but did not appear at all on PayPal. PayPal CS said that she'd received 4 or 5 prior calls with the same issue. An hour later I received the standard email from PayPal saying that the Buyer had paid and it was now "okay to ship". So perhaps the Sunday outage is a "first of the month" ritual with PayPal?

@eBay Seller-eBay Buyer - You do realize that our buddy John Donahoe is now in charge of PayPal, right?

No, and I wasn't aware that John Do-do was in charge of John Do-do either ;-)

You have to love the way the corporate department of spin attempts to minimize the impact of these frequent outages in order to bamboozle Wall Street analysts, investors and users.

The site was totally down - preventing huge numbers of users from accessing their accounts, and yet they want everyone to believe "a small number" were impacted.

The lies and deceits continue despite it being obvious that the IT infrastructure at both eBay and PayPal are perpetually on the verge of breakdown with no permanent fix in sight.

One has to wonder - when this company gets out from under the penny pinching administration of eBay, will things get better or worse?

John Donahoe destroyed ebay, Pay pal, YouTube.  He's stepping down to spend more time with his family.

Hey, at least if the site is down, no one can HACK it, right?
