What Do Sellers Think of eBay's New TV Ad?

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

eBay is running a new television ad as part of its new global brand campaign that kicks off on Monday. We wondered what sellers would think of the ad, so please watch it (below) and let us know if you think it will succeed in driving shoppers to the site.

The ad shows "how moments of inspiration can be instantly shoppable on eBay" and features a Selena Gomez song. The refrain "When you're ready, come and get it" is repeated eight times throughout eBay's ad.

It's noteworthy that in its press release announcing the new campaign, eBay emphasizes its sellers. For example, eBay Marketplaces executive Chris Payne says, "Thanks to our sellers, eBay has one of the most extensive and interesting product catalogs in the world."

Designed to put eBay top-of-mind during the holiday season, the campaign includes television and digital ads, social outreach, and a sweepstakes in the U.S., Australia, UK, and Germany, with more markets to come in 2015.

And remember eBay's fairly new "collections"? Themed collections relating to items featured in the ads will be shared on eBay.com.

We've got more about eBay's global brand campaign in tomorrow's newsletter. For now, please watch the ad below and let us know what you think.

That "new" purse is going back right after the party, SNAD, with seller paid return shipping.

I guess they left that part out.

eBay sent an email to sellers with the title "We're bringing more buyers to you" that informs them of the new ad.

"See the new global campaign
In our biggest campaign yet, we show buyers that whatever inspires them can be instantly shoppable on eBay. Get ready for a successful holiday season."

No branding until the last segment. So many opportunities to use at least subliminal branding. Idiots.

Spending money on advertising instead of “performance” bonuses! Obviously, desperation has set in …

Frankly, even moving Johnny Ho upstairs—hopefully, only until they can gracefully advise him that its long past time for him to spend more time with his family—is not going to make any difference now; the Ho has succeeded in doing so much damage the old scow has water lapping at its gunnels; not even the new captain elect, Devin Little, will be able to get this broken-down old hulk off the rocks …

Only five more days to the latest smoke and mirrors performance on the 15th ...

The eBay executive suite—where the incompetent mingle with the disingenuous, the malevolent and the outright criminal, and the just plain stupid ... http://bit.ly/11F2eas

Ebay included Jimi Hendrix in their ad copy?

It's obvious ebay is trying to turn around their sales slump, they're definitely suffering.

Mr Hendrix himself would most likely cringe to see the way his images were used in this ad. OGH!

Buyers don't know the turmoil ebay is in. I doubt many of them really care as long as they get a deal. Sadly, it will be an ebay seller who makes this all possible at their own expense.

When you're ready, come and rip off one of our sellers- we'll make it easy for you. Thanks for shopping on ebay!

What idiot ad agency dreams these up?

Awful, just awful.

And the implications in the email should scare all of us.

Gee I thought it was an ad for a smartphone or maybe to shop Amazon. It was not until the end and only IF you wait until the end do you see ebay.

Once again ebay missed by not having "Ending Soonest" first.

The app itself is just another gimmick. eBay needs to focus on fundamentals like keeping the Members that it already has. We all know formerly active members who no longer log onto eBay due to dissatisfaction with eBay customer service. As any marketing exec will tell you: there's a finite number of potential customers that you can piss of and still remain profitable.

Well I sure hope that most buyers don't know the turmoils sellers are having on Ebay.  While I know it is fun and emotionally gratifying to slam Ebay, I have kids to feed which is far more important than venting.

So hopefully more customers are forthcoming.  I for one would certainly welcome them.

I'm not as concerned about using stuff and then returning them as some sellers are.  I don't currently get so many returns that it is concerning, just part of doing business, but I also respect that other categories are at much higher risk for that.

I also won't participate in the the Holiday Extended returns either.  Boy that sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.  Got to wonder how many TRS sellers will participate because they refuse to lose that discount for November and December.  But then because they offered the extended return policy they start racking up defects they would not of had under a regular return policy.  How many of those sellers will lose TRS status all together because of too many defects?  Bet we will never know.

Despite all the problems sellers are having with Ebay, I personally hope this is a terrific holiday season for sales.  Ebay problems are secondary to taking care of my family.

Wow!  Granted, I don't know much about the advertising world but as a consumer I think the ad is a failure (can't resist saying: as many of ebay's recent endeavors).

It wouldn't have held my interest long enough to get to the end to SEE (but never HEAR!) the company's name.

In addition, since I knew it was an ebay ad, I understood the little boxes around the products the SECOND time I watched it.  I didn't even notice them the first time through.  Second time, I got it because I had seen the ad once and knew, then, that it was an ad for ebay.

To be fair, I watched it three times and I weigh in with my vote of not at all a good ad.

AGAIN : Completely IRRELEVANT to what Ebay is BEST for > AUCTIONS of neat old stuff.
Nobody in their right mind would buy the stuff in the ad "remotely". All that stuff is better bought in brick and mortar stores where you can see and feel the quality of the merch.
Ebay has run aground. It's finished.

I think the target demographic for the ad is a younger one based on the music and the general age of people in the ad.

Not only eBay - most commercials these days are geared toward a younger demographic.

Seems like the only companies targeting the over 50 crowd are the pharmaceutical companies, medical device companies, Depends, Metamucil, and cosmetic surgery providers (and I am noticing many of these commercial actors seem to be getting younger, too!)

Chris Payne says, "Thanks to our sellers, eBay has one of the most extensive and interesting product catalogs in the world."

And yet the beatings (of the sellers) continue.

Looks like a Comm 101 student project: currently pop song, non-stop visuals, slow-mo. But you can tell it wasn't made by the one kid in the class whose project was SO far above everyone else's that you just knew he was probably gonna make it in the field.   It's thoroughly forgettable, unoriginal, uninspiring.  And although the song may be popular, "when you're READY" isn't the right message.  Doesn't exactly send people rushing to log in and spend. Final grade, C-.

(P.S. You won't find Dorothy's actual slippers on ebay; you'll find a "New Vintage" pair made in China.  Same with Hendrix' guitar.)

The TV Commercial is really, really, really what we do not need and quite frankly is that all you got?
We need a CEO to advertise and highlight all the categories on ebay, there are other items on ebay besides high fashion, the effort put into the high fashion category on ebay is just so absurd, I mean really.
We need a CEO offering coupons to buyers for buying items in EVERY CATEGORY, COUPONS OFF THIS PURCHASE AND YOUR NEXT PURCHASE. We need a TV Commercial that spurs sales NOW!
JOHN DONAHOE IF YOU DO NOT ACT NOW AND FIX THE CARNAGE EBAY WILL CLOSE, SELLERS ARE FED UP! AND YES THIS IS NOISE LISTEN TO IT!!
We need a CEO,CFO and President of ebay to go on national television and apologize for all the technical problems and security problems and for driving a wedge between buyers and sellers, we needs a ceo and his managers admitting they are wrong and that they are revamping a horrible buyer protection program and TRS program.
Sellers are small businesses and buyers too, so many sellers have fled ebay.
We need a CEO to make ebay USER FRIENDLY, instead we have a battle ground between sellers and bad buyers.
In it's present state ebay is absolutely horrible. How many sellers are refusing to buy anything on ebay, how many sellers have told their friends and family not to shop on ebay.WORD OF MOUTH!
The site is not running properly, while moving around on ebay there are page loading delays, wrong pages delivered yesterday, pictures missing or very slow loading.
Do they really think this is acceptable
Every day HONEST sellers are cringing when they sign into ebay to see what buyer has opened a case because ebay is prompting buyers to do so and has made policy to help them shoplift. It is like a epidemic, I had very few problems on ebay with buyers, the last 6 months have been a nightmare and recently it is unbearable.
Very slow sales for the last two months and what sales you have there are thieves that I never has before, there lying and making things up and my time is wasted fighting them off.
Ebay's customer service is like rolling the dice you might get help but you probably won't, even if you have proof, buyer remorse is suppose to be not covered in buyer protection but ebay's customer service is not following that part of the policy.
