Griff Says Sellers Confused over Tracking and eBay Defects

By: Ina Steiner

eBay Seller Advocate Jim Griffith ("Griff") took to Facebook to clear up what he said was some confusion over shipping and tracking requirements - "are you certain you are uploading your tracking in your stated handing time? Then stop worrying," he wrote.

"Remember, every seller account is evaluated on the 20th of the month for the preceding evaluation period which ends on last day of the preceding month. For example: for a seller with a 12 month look back evaluation period, his account is evaluated on say, July 20th for the past 12 months from June to June. This 20-day window allows for an accurate reading of that seller’s verified tracking as it stood on June 30th. If the seller uploaded tracking for 100% of all packages in that June-June period, it will be shown as 100% tracking."

He's got lots more to say - you can read Griff's full post on Facebook, and we break it down in this article in Sunday's Update newsletter.

Let us know what you think of his assessment of tracking and how it impacts sellers, and share your advice on dealing with eBay's tracking requirements.

It's hard to take seriously any (supposed) advocate who allegedly thinks we should include candy treats in our shipments, or that we should bring doughnuts to the clerks at the Post Office.

1) Not everyone in the world shares his (apparent) obsession with sweets and pastry.

2) Doing such things adds unnecessary time and expense and cuts into profit.

3) Why should we have to bribe buyers to be honest? Why should we have to bribe postal employees to do the bare minimum that their job requires? And by the same token, why should we ''reward'' postal employees for ONLY doing the bare minimum?

and

4) Even if what he says is accurate and true... the fact that nobody can trust him is a rather revealing commentary on eBay's reputation and the honesty and trustworthiness of its execs and representatives.

This is why I walked away from Ebay.
It's MY business. My clients evaluate me. I must be excellent because : A) they say so. B) I get tons of repeat business.
That's the only "evaluation" necessary.
If I'm not good at what I do, the people will walk away.
Corporate is not in a position to pass judgement.
Corporate is a flaming example of "Mission Creep".
They're out of their league.
They have too many ways to shield themselves from "Client Judgement".
On the other hand Ebay is now experiencing is clients (sellers) walking away.
So now corporate is it seeing first hand.
There are no over see'rs over the over see'rs to whip Ebay into shape.
P.S. Hey Ebay > STOP with the contests, coupons and prizes. You're making an ass of yourself.

I read Uncle Grief's epistle on Facebook.

Complicated and it seems too idealistic. eBay spends way too much effort running your business while their service continues to decline.

Griff dumped the candy pushing and now I guess he "dishes listings" giving you spittoons or something if you meet his lofty standards.

The "Radio Show" with the 18 minute dead spots were funny. He must have Dick Nixon's secretary, Rosemary Woods as an engineer. The show was funnier when it was less policed and the occasional disgruntled seller would get on the air. The shows are scripted, and he and Robin would lose their places. LOL indeed!

I remember watching Griff vacation videos on YouTube. Griff and his posse were in Hawaii. He's about the only thing eBay has going for it.

I called him the "BUYER'S ADVOCATE" months ago on here, becaase that is all he is !

Who dubbed this clown a "SELLERS ADVOCATE" ?

He looks like he loves candy and pastry's !

Go retire Uncle Grief !

Better yet go out for Halloween and get some more candy, your costume is yourself ! Sellers Advocate is a costume for sure, cause you are not mine or any sellers advocate !

It's been adundantly clear in many Town Hall meetings that Griff himself has often not only contradicted himse f on several occasions but has been flat wrong on others.

All policies pontification by ebay management should be on ebay.com itself NOT on some unofficial website where Griff can't be held accountable for his often inaccurate bloviating.

These people are utterly disgusting.

Why ebay still pays him is beyond me when we already have Brian Burke.

Ebay keeps piling sh*t on top of sh*t but the end result is still sh*t. Changes on top of convoluted changes with contradictory policies along with glitches and haphazard implementation. Griff is wondering why sellers are confused? Buyers are not coming to ebay. Why should they when ebay promotes buyer protection from sellers and calls their own sellers defective? Sellers have to invest all their time trying to keep up with all this busy work and trying to keep their head above water from not only bad buyers but bad ebay. Who has time to actually sell on ebay? Why bother? Why should sellers go through all the trouble to create listings and do everything to perfection when ebay drops the ball and fails on their part?

Does ebay bring buyers to the site by way of quality advertising (I don't mean ebay's cheapo media advertising and ninga crap)? No

Does ebay show ALL sellers listings 24/7? No

Does ebay treat all their sellers fair and equally? No

Does ebay promote and support sellers (by the way are ebay's customers) as the reason to come to ebay to shop? No

Does ebay promote the fun of auctions? No

Does ebay tell buyers they can get everything and anything on ebay where you can't get it anywhere else? No

Does ebay fix site glitches when reported? No Do they do it in a timely manner? No

Does ebay generate positivity over negativity? No

Well I could go on and on but again what is the point? As long as ebay thinks of sellers as defective, buyers needing protection from sellers and absurd constant hoop jumping rules, sellers who remain will continue to be confused. Ebay will self-destruct and be sold as scrap the Bain way.

Goodness gracious!  What a lot of verbiage to govern/rule sellers of legal age.  What in the world has eBay become?

Oh, I know, I sound like the old guy with the ''when I was a kid, I had to walk 4 miles in the snow to get to  school'' story...but back in the earlier days of eBay, an adult was treated as one.  It was a kinder, gentler time...

''Bad'' sellers would soon be weeded out as would ''bad'' buyers by virtue of their online conduct.  It didn't take long for either scenario.  And that still encouraged growth on the site.  But since the shift to the mentality that all sellers are out to swindle buyers, all these ''new'' and ''improved'' buyer protection measures have gone way overboard!

A seller advocate should approach the powers that be with the same mindset as the sellers on the site...oh, I'm sorry, I am not a Diamond / Big Box seller...just small, insignificant noise that should be eliminated according to those powers that be.  Personally, that ''elimination'' has worked as I am no longer leaving my ''noisy'' money in eBay coffers.

The seller confinement measures are too numerous to navigate let alone mention them here but Griff will begin with tracking and how it may or may not affect one's defect ratings.  Next topic...oh, Griff, it's going to be a long, long holiday season...of explanation....sorry to say...it sucks to be you!

I'm sure all the new eBay sellers will sit attentively, hanging on every word of each new missive re: seller regulations....and all they wanted to do was sell their smart phone...too much....seriously!

There, now, step down from soap box...done!

"seller advocate" what a joke.
I don't know if anybody has noticed, but when TRS came into effect, I didn't see any of the diamond sellers qualified, now all of a sudden, they're all TRS.  Sorry I've purchased numerous times from BHexpress, never have they had a handling time of 1 day. This is bs.

His message to "confused sellers" sounds like code for "we're trying to find any little fix we can to make up for the horrible policies that are back-firing on us with holiday season coming up.  Hey geniuses why not lift seller limits,  show 100% the listings, revoke said horrible policies including idiotic 1/4-year returns, humble yourselves and apologize to all the sellers?

@Ming "Why eBay still pays him is beyond me...".  No kidding, especially since they dropped the folksy veneer long ago.  It's hard, steely corporate through and through.

LDS Brother gave me great idea for Halloween costume.  I'm going as EBay logo.  I welcome as many others who want to protest in this way to join me.

Seller Advocate My @$$

This guy was once half way decent but apparently the Stepford Works got hold of him and sucked out his brains and integrity too.

Hope he gets a BIG paycheck and can cuddle up to all that cash while he tries to sleep at night

Notice NO ONE had commented on his TOPIC---Hmmmm--Maybe because we ALL know this is a great big fat LIE and ALL of these things either ARE defects or will BECOME defects directly.

Ebay must be Pig Latin for "ALways Lies"
