eBay to Let Buyers and Sellers Create Pinterest-Like Collections
By: Ina Steiner
eBay is catching up to other sites and marketplaces and will launch new features this fall. Tuesday's EcommerceBytes Newsflash explains eBay's hiring of a "Chief Curator & Editorial Director," what's coming, and how eBay's new social features compare to those from other sites such as Etsy Pages, Amazon Collections and sites like Pinterest.
While it's passe to "follow" users and content from other people on sites like Facebook and Pinterest, it seems revolutionary on a site like eBay which has been slow to add such features - when it finally added social buttons that let people share listings on social networking sites, that was big news.
You can see some of the new features by going to the eBay Profile page of eBay user shopmycollectibles. Her profile page shows her picture and description along with her eBay feedback. It shows how many people are following her, how many collections she's created, how many views she has, how long she's been a member of eBay, and her location (United States).
The next section shows thumbnail pictures of her "Items for sale" (with the title, selling price and how much time is left before the listing ends), followed by "Collections by shopmycollectibles," a list of Collections and Members she follows, and tiny pictures of members who are following her.
eBay's new Collections are very similar to Pinterest boards, but are limited to eBay listings (users on Pinterest can "pin" photos and products from across the web).
If you've used such features on marketplaces such as Etsy and Amazon, let us know if they benefit you in terms of traffic and sales.
What do you think of eBay adding social features - will you try to gain followers, create collections and follow other people?
