Should Microsoft Recruit eBay CEO to Replace Ballmer?

By: Ina Steiner

BusinessWeek reports that Microsoft may be considering eBay CEO John Donahoe as a replacement to Steve Ballmer who is stepping down as chief executive officer. At least, headhunters seem to think he's got the chops:

"John Donahoe, CEO of EBay Inc. was mentioned by executive recruiters as a potential candidate. A former consultant, he's managed to transform the company into a broader e-commerce enterprise from an online auctioneer."

The article says Microsoft could look internally for its new CEO, or look to Google for a potential leader.

What exactly would John Donahoe bring to the table as CEO of Microsoft? What "disruptive innovation" would he unleash upon the iconic Word, Excel, IE and other assets such as Bing?

The idea that Donahoe is seen as a contender leads me to ponder once again who would make a good candidate for CEO of eBay, and in what direction he or she should take the company.

Any thoughts?

I nominate Ming or Pace or one of the other frequent posters here who could make changes for the better and not continue the destruction of eBay.

BREAKING NEWS: There seem to be issues going on for about 4 hours now keeping at least 2 million people from getting onto ebay. It's on the Seller Central discussion board now...

I think they should hire him, he would be good for them.

Better for Ebay sellers to get rid of the fraud post haste.

Oh yes, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE let him be the new CEO there!!!

A) eBay sellers will be rid of him
B) he will have the lens of the world watching his every move.

JD don't let the door hit you on the way out...

Another company's successful past being let go.

Microsoft and every other serious business should steer clear of anyone associated with Ebay!  That's my suggestion.

John Donahoe isn't smart enough to be CEO of Microsoft.

He isn't talented enough to guide a mature ecommerce company.

He's destroyed ebay yet managed to convince many analysts ebay would be 'saved' by  the likes of TRU, General Motors, Neiman-Marcus, Zappos, and a million man march of criminal buyers.

He's nothing more than an empty facade with sociopathic personality bent on destruction and leaving as much agony in his wake as he possible can.

He's nothing more than a vicious cheap cardboard construct of Wall Street, the paid hacks who ostensibly cover Silicon Valley, and the ebay Department of Spin who's become another overschooled, undereducated fat cat member of America's growing cadre of sociopathic plutocratic corporate overlords.

The Ho and his all male towel snapping henchmen couldn't grasp the dynamics of the .com marketplace so they embarked on a destruction project that's just about completed.

But he would be quite comfortable with one thing: many people hate Microsoft as much as some of us hate ebay. The difference is, however, that the thin skinned Ho wouldn't have to read about his long litany of crimes. There is no EB monitoring Microsoft.

The Ho uses 'thinking' days to conceptualize new ways to destroy as many small American businesses as possible -- a large subset of Microsoft's customers.

This rumor should have female MS executives polishing their resumes and reinvigorating their networks.

But the likely question is: is the Devil we know better or worse than the Devil we don't?

Except that devil we don't know is likely one named Wenig.

I have just gone through hell with a new MS operating system and programs. Inefficient doesn't even come close. I will NEVER buy another Microsoft product. SO PLEASE! SEND HIM NOW.

Jonh Donahoe is burnt out.

He may have been a darling money maker at one time but he now needs to take some thinking time and relax with his family while his children are still at home.

We need a new pitcher.

If Microsoft is openly courting the idea of JD as the CEO then investors need to pull their investments to safer harbors because Microsoft is already making hazardous thoughts that show poor leadership from the board members.

OMIGOD- Please hire JD Microsoft- Then we can sit back with the popcorn and WATCH MICROSOFT IMPLODE.
Usually I would say watch out what you want as a replacement could be even worse- but that is NOT POSSIBLE- no new ceo could make this any worse at this point.
Please SOMEBODY hire JD AWAY from our site!!

Ming is right of course, there is NO WAY a FOOL like JD could take over an established company like MS, and JD knows it too.

I can't imagine why Microsoft would even consider someone like Donahue.  What are his assets as a CEO?  Tearing down and haphazardly rebuilding a once very successful company?  I think even Microsoft would agree...he's no Jeff Bezos...far far from it!  So, why even mention him? Unless you're deliberately looking for failure.

I... can't... stop... laughing... OMG!

Is this from ''The Onion''?!

I think it's a story that's been planted for the purpose of influencing stock-prices, and short-term gains. --- Float JD as a possibility, watch MS stock fall, buy lots of MS stock, announce it's not going to happen, watch MS stock rise, sell MS stock.

If Donahue had brains to begin with he never would have meddled with Ebay's auction atmosphere - he would have split it much as Overstock did in the old days and have retail on one side and the auctions on the other....but NO....he had his sights on the impossible...."Amazon Light"...without the work, without the sweat equity and using only Ebay's brand recognition and it blew up in his face!  If Microsoft has any brains at all they will cross him off their list (much as I'd love to see someone with solid business sense come in and run Ebay)  :-(

From an eBay seller's perspective, I think JD would be a great fit ANYWHERE BUT EBAY!!

Would JD help Microsoft? Who cares... as long as he leaves eBay and is replaced by someone who is focused on building a marketplace that enables sellers to succeed instead of building roadblocks that impede seller success at every turn as John Donahoe has done during his tenure.

eBay sellers could fare no worse with a change in leadership.

"The idea that Donahoe is seen as a contender leads me to ponder" that the whole world has gone stark raving mad ...

The idea is simply too funny; surely, it’s someone's idea of a joke on Donahoe—April Fool's Day has come early this year …

As far as a new CEO for eBay is concerned, Meg said it, get a monkey …

“If this student were any more stupid, he'd have to be watered twice a week.”—Anon ...
Nevertheless, that nice, caring Bain company gave John Donahoe a job ... http://bit.ly/YvxFEg

Is it April fools already? MS got thier lunch served to them with RT and eBy is getting its lunch served to it by Amazon ... is it April Fools or The blind leading the Blind.

MS stole most of thier ideas from CPM and Digital Research ... they never had an original idea in thier lives - and neither does eBay.

The difference is, MS has SO MUCH money that they use it for heating in the winter, while JD constantly spends his "thinking days" trying to fool Wall Street.

Whom ever came up with this idea (if its real) is the stupidest human being on the planet. MS would be better hiring Janet Incompitant Reno or Bill whats the definition of IS Clinton ... there are PLENTY of big name screw ups - but at least THEY have name drawing power - JD does NOT. Hes just the guy that "ruined eBay" ... thats not a moniker Id want following ME around.

Alternately my cat is free to take a job as MS. Even she knows that the only job is to think of Windows naming projects (Windows 10 anyone?) and to (with Intel) flood pc sellers with money for moving PC's and screwing up the market (you get $100 a cpu or so).

My 2 yr old neice is also available ... like JD - shes knows "Its mine - I NEED it!" ...

Should it be true, MS deserves what they get, eBay will just promote some idiot from within and the stupidities will continue, and Amazon will STILL be a better place to sell goods.
