Amazon Website Experiences Outage - How Much Did It Cost You?

By: Ina Steiner

Amazon's website went down Monday afternoon and remained inaccessible for about 40 minutes. The outage seems to have occurred sometime between 2:30 and 3:00 Eastern. Earlier this month, Amazon's seller portal known as Seller Central was down, but today the entire site appears to be experiencing the outage.

A report on Ecommerce EKG came in just before 3:00 pm:

"Amazon down again?? This time it seems like it's the entire site.. what the h*ll are they doing over there?? 2nd time in a few weeks.. why can't these sites just leave things alone instead of screwing around trying to fix or change things that aren't broke?? Why can't they just concentrate on the issues that sellers want?? This is ridiculous."

The site was seemed to come back online at about 3:37 pm. While down, visiting Amazon.com brought up a page with the following message:

Oops! We're very sorry, but we're having trouble doing what you just asked us to do. Please give us another chance--click the Back button on your browser and try your request again. Or start from the beginning on our homepage.

Twitter was full of reports about the outage. We've got an inquiry into Amazon PR to find out what happened.

The Seller Central outage earlier this month did not prevent shoppers from purchasing items, but prevented sellers from processing the orders. Amazon remained mum about that incident.

Today's outage did prevent shoppers from making purchases since the site was completely inaccessible. How much does a 40 minute Amazon outage cost third-party merchants in lost sales?

Impulse sales of items that can be found elsewhere are gone forever.

But, buyers who prefer Amazon (especially Prime members like myself) would likely wait-out the outage and make their purchase later.

It's difficult for me to imagine that Amazon (and its sellers) lost 100% of every sale that would have taken place during the outage. ~ Surely there were a sizable number who simply made their intended purchase later on in the afternoon.

(Just a guess. That's what *I* would have done if I'd encountered it.)

It cost me time as I was in the middle of listing when it went down. As to sales, who knows. But it has been a PITN as both times the 'glitches' caught me in listing mode.

For purchases on Amazon, I would out wait the glitch as I usually have reward points and credits that I use to help fund purchases. Why go elsewhere and have to pay more?

@Moonwishes Because something you might be looking for might not be there at all. There are many sellers who do not use Amazon at all.

Amazon glitches every year about this time, they try to patch things live instead of taking the site down for maintenance, and in general Amazon has not sold a single thing for me during those outages. Yes, it has happened several times in the last 2 years, and it has even been hacked into.

So saying something jejeune like "why go elsewhere" means you can't be bothered to even look. Go ahead and stay with Amazon if you want. Just don't expect everything to be there.
