Is eBay Charging Correctly after Fee Overhaul?

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

eBay instituted new standard seller fees in April and new Store fees on May 1st. We've received a reports from a few sellers that eBay has been overcharging them since the new fees went into effect, so I thought I would open up the blog to questions and concerns.

An eBay seller filed a report on the Ecommerce EKG board on May 2nd:

"eBay charging the "old" FVF for sales after May 1st. Called and got a "courtesy" refund for sales May 1st and 2nd (the "new" FVF for my category is supposed to be 7%, eBay is charging me 11%).
"

Among the reports coming in, a seller wrote today: "Since the May1st fee change eBay has been overcharging on a lot of listings. We sell in the media category and they have been charging the old fees on 50 final listings so far this month. I have called twice now and they credited me for the first 25 listings, but I have another 24 since. I am keeping track of each final listing to make sure I get a credit. Ebay says that they are aware of the problem and they are checking into why this happening but have no clue as to when it will be fixed as of today May 11th. Just wanted your readers to be aware."

Here are some FAQs from eBay's fee announcement for background.

When will these updates take effect?

The changes to eBay standard fees will go into effect beginning 00:00 (midnight PDT) on April 16, 2013. The fee changes for eBay Stores will go into effect beginning 00:00 (midnight PDT) on May 1, 2013.

Final value fee rates are determined when the item was listed. For "Good 'Till Cancelled" items, final value fee rates are determined by when the item last renewed. Items listed or renewed before 00:00 (midnight PDT on May 16 for standard sellers and May 1 for eBay Stores) will be charged the old FVF rates.

If you are a current eBay Stores subscriber, the new Stores subscription fees and terms will automatically apply starting May 1, 2013 without any action on your part.

I'm already an eBay Stores subscriber. What happens if I don't convert my current subscription to the upcoming changes?

As a current subscriber, your store subscription will continue as a monthly subscription with automatic renewal, but you will be charged a monthly fee at the new rate. New eBay Stores terms will be applicable effective May 1. New subscription fees are effective on May 1, but final value fees charged will be based on the final value fee in effect on the date the item was listed or renewed.

Is it easy to determine whether eBay is charging you the correct fees? If you think you are being charged incorrectly or have questions, please let me know, and if eBay is charging you the correct fees, let us know that as well!

Every one of my FVFs has been overcharged. Every one!

It used to be when I found errors in my monthly statement, ebay refused not only to discuss them but refused to correct their mistakes.

What will it take now for these thieves to correct their mistakes and issue refunds?

Or will they?

I am confused by my FVFs since 5/1. I thought they were going to be easier to divine. As low as 3% on an item over $3k. Is that right??? I only have a premium store.

Ming don't be upset, but I'm in the same boat as you.  None of my FVFs have been correctly charged since Mid April.  My store fee is off too for the charge in April.  It should have been prorated for the promotion they had at the time and the balance of the month free since I upgraded my store.  But so far I have not seen that happen.

I too don't understand why Ebay can't be honest and upfront about stuff like this.  If you make a mistake, admit it, own it and then fix it.  It doesn't have to be complicated.

@RCL

It actually is less complicated now.  It is just overwhelming right now because they changed so much.  But the structure is actually simplier now.  We all just have a learning curve to go through.

See if this link helps you.  If not, please ask more questions until you get all the answers you need.

You're not being cheated. It's FREE SHIPPING for sellers.

You guys will get riled up but nothing will happen. No one will get fired, or their pay reduced... at eBay.

Your ''pay is reduced.'' It might be some dimes here and there, but what about all the time you spend double checking your statements. I guess you can put the billing documents on your smart phone and then you can double check them while at the beach or camping with the kids.

Your partner is a pickpocket. You need to watch them all the time.

And when they screw up and cheat you, you have to let them know. Spend your time on the phone and go over line after line.

Make your you note who you talked to.

When the next statement comes you have to check to make sure you were reimbursed for the billing errors.

If a mistake was made I. The error refund, you have to follow up and make sure the error and refund are resolved so you are not cheated for the overcharge.

It's NEVER an undercharge is it.

Wait, Wait, WAIT!!!

Where are you going? We have to go over the statement for THIS MONTH.

Then if there any errors you can give eBay a call and get the overcharges from this bill taken care of.

How do you feel? Happy with life? Well paid for your effort?

Ah, it's just a job, no?

At the end of the eBay day, the time clock buzzes at 5 o'clock and you punch out. Leave your cares and your worries o. The desk. It's the weekend and the work and thought given to it can promptly start again Monday moring at 9 AM when in punch in for another eBay day.

Having your own job, being your own boss and calling the shots, that's what this is all about.

I'm checking dates now, but it looks like I am being charged 11% in the  All Other (Art) category.
Here's a nice simple percentage calculator if anybody wants to do a quick check on their invoices by line item.

... OK the 11% is correct for me, since all those listings started in April.

So I'll have to wait for something listed after May 1, to see if they are charging me correctly.

Or I could end all my listings and re-start them.

The FVF is NOT based on when you START a listing.  FVF is based on When is SELLS and for how much.  So if you are being charged 11% you are being overcharged.  The highest amount in any category is 9% now and some categories are lower than that.

Back a couple of posts I gave a link.  That link will help you figure out what your rate should be.

@Ed

I respect your passionate feeling about Free Shipping.  Personally I feel that it should be called Shipping Included, but of course Ebay isn't going to do that.  But to single out Ebay really isn't accurate either. Amazon calles it FS, so does many other retailers out there.  It isn't just Ebay.  Ebay is just one of many many many sites that do it.  Nothing unusual or sinister about it.

On Ebay however, FS is great for some products and not so much for other.  So each seller just needs to determine what is best for their business and go with that.  It certainly isn't a one size fits all on Ebay.

Sellers that sell enough to have a store and sell stuff under $85 have actually gotten a pay increase from Ebay with the fee changes of May 1st, as long as they pick the right store level for them.  But you are very much right, for sellers that sell stuff regularly for a higher price that that, it is an increase in fees.

GOOD catch !!!  Thank you.

Now that you caught that, I remember that coming up a long time ago.  Doing it this way makes it way too time consuming for a seller to track if they have lots of transactions.  You could spend all day trying to figure out what was charged and was it appropriate.  Which may have been the plan.

But great catch and I am appreciative of it.

No problem, this new seller update is a monster and I'm sure all the little intricacies will float to the surface as we all scramble to adjust.

I'm using the percentage calculator I posted above to check my FVF's until all my April listings roll around again.  If I enter the item number in the Account Activity search, it lists all activity including the last listing date.

So far, so good - but I'm watchin' em! :D

My current statement is a confusing mess too -

- Some Final Value Fees are showing at their old rates.

- Others are correct, but are showing with TRS discounts already applied.

- The rest defy logical calculation - I have no idea how they were arrived at...

I read the other day that Jeffery Skilling, former president of Enron, may have his federal prison sentence shortened by at least ten years.

I'll bet the ebafia BoD is salivating over the possibility of hiring this guy to disruptively displace The Ho.

It's clear ebafia hires most of their bookkeeping and bill coding employees from parolees convicted of theft and embezzlement.

One thing I find fishy is that every single eBay mistake is always in eBay's favor. Never once in 10+ years have they ever made a mistake in my favor. Kind of makes you wonder.

You can guarantee all these fraudulent charges will end up on Ebay's EBITDA so shareholders think they're making more money than they really are.

Yes, they are overcharging.  I upgraded to an anchor store where the Fixed Price monthly fee is supposed to be lowered from 5 cents to 3 cents.  I called ebay and confirmed it was wrong, but had to 'turn it over to the technical team'.  But guess what?  They couldn't call me back at my request if anything got fixed.  I'm just supposed to look at my bill in a couple of days.  It's still wrong, but they are sure enjoying their nice new building in Salt Lake City Utah where one entire building is devoted to their amenities.  Guess they are banking on the extra 2 cents for millions of items to pay for it.  Yes, I'll check back and I'll check my statement, but it's a LOT OF EXTRA TIME that I do not have!!  Peggy  (I haven't even checked the FVF yet. UGH)

Here in Oz we started on the 1st of May.I listed the dearest of my 40 free listings first. Or so I thought. On closer inspection I only received 28 free listings( confirmed by eBay) and then they tried to charge me $1.90 and $2 for my other listings instead of $1.50.I have contacted eBay 3 times in 8 days and each time get replies stating they will get back to me in 24-48 hours  normally it is within 12 hours so there are big problems. I did get a personal reply yesterday, the only one so far, only to tell me that it is a technical problem so they are hand balling it up the system and will get back to me with an answer. This is ridiculous I have spent 10 days trying to figure out how best to rearrange my listings and work out the finances as now if we list an item for auction and have a BIN price as well the BIN price must be more than 30% of the start price. I was selling at a start price of $39.35 or BIN and $45.95 now it is start $39.95 or BIN $51.94. We can list at fixed price for $1.50 however we don't get as much exposure. They are definitely trying to get rid of us mum and dad sellers. This is doing my head in ARGH

@SKYHOOKS--

Thank you for "validating" not only my math re the 30% on an auction start price and the absurd 30% BIN point spread BUT the fact that for somethings there is that "Over $50 mental pullback".

I sell an item world wide that I too had listed for the SAME point spread--but with the 30% I would have had to go OVER that $50.  Now---for MOST of us---I think an item you don't "need" but might very well "want"  (a LOT!!!!)  that $50 is the limit of an "Impulse purchase".

I know for me it is on a lot of things.

So I had to either LOWER my auction start price to still have the same  BIN price---which was WORKING for me---and now ebay (and I!!!!)  make LESS on each and every sale because of it.

Whose stoooooopid idea WAS this--to make LESS on every sale?  What were they SMOKING?  I thought the medical pot rule was repealed in Cali????

I don't want to go to a fixed price as I have had some nice "bidding wars" on this item--and I have had some competition (no longer selling but you never know) that threatened to undercut me so I need to keep selling these as long as I can and make as much as I can on them.

Makes me absolutely CRAZY when I go to relist and now get a message--"If you item didn't sell LOWER the price"---geeeeeze do ya think I didn't do my homework on this?  And that the price is NOT competitive?  And that I don't know how to run MY own business?

Oh wait---we WERE talking about EBAY now weren't we.

Can't quite cope with the thought of checking those FVF and other fees tonight---

After all tomorrow IS another day.

If you will call eBay, and ask them to please REFRESH all your listings for you... they will.  Then, everything will be under the new FVF rates.  Everything listed before 5/1 is under the OLD FVF rates.  Good luck to all!
