Will eBay's Latest Social Feature Finally Take Hold?

By: Ina Steiner

In the mid-2000's, eBay began losing its strong user engagement to sites like MySpace, and its answer was to throw a lot of things at the wall - blogs, wikis, neighborhoods and groups, for example. Yet it has always been ambivalent about users interacting with each other for fear of buyers and sellers taking transactions offline.

eBay's latest reaction to social networking sites like Facebook and Pinterest is called Setify - see today's news story, "eBay Setify Gets Social with Collectors of Comic Books and Coins."

eBay said Setify lets collectors track and share their collections. But it's uncertain just how much collectors are willing to trust eBay to do this for them - and how much work they're willing to do to "share" with others in the eBay community. Keeping track of collections isn't easy, and lots of sophisticated tools have been developed to help collectors track items both for fun and for insurance purposes.

Take a look at eBay Setify and let us know if you "like" it!

What is the long term value of engaging with eBay's latest social feature?

eBay's current leadership has seen to it that the words eBay and social do not belong in the same sentence.

After everything eBay has done to stifle non transactional buyer to seller interaction & communication, it is only a matter of time before this too falls victim to eBay's paranoia and is rendered useless.

At first blush, it appears that eBay is ''inventing-a-problem'' in order to solve it. Or, if ''inventing'' isn't the correct word, perhaps ''exaggerating'' is a better fit.

Maybe it's just-me... but I'm not all that impressed with it. It seems to be more hype than anything else. Perhaps it would have value to someone else.

Clearly, they invested a lot of time (&/or money) in the demo video... if only eBay had committed the same amount of time in IMPROVING eBay and IMPROVING Turbolister, perhaps they wouldn't need the gee-whiz, ya-hoo, pie-in-the-sky, gimmicky toys and distractions.

eBay needs to reevaluate its priorities.

I would like to see more integration with facebook and twitter and easier to get ebay users to those sites for us.

instead of telling us that if we have friends sign up for our pages like facebook that cant bid on our items which made no sense???? as more things dont with ebay.

stop expanding on things like this and work on issues they currently have and work with the BIG social networking sites..

After looking at their promo reel, it seems as though Setify is an up-dated version of "Want It Now." Instead of searching the web, apparently you search eBay to complete your collection, and I assume you get e-mail alerts when something you're missing gets listed. I also assume that by marking what you already have, you don't continue to get alerts about those items. What I really want to know is how eBay will be making money on this endeavor since there's got to be new fees involved.

It will probably be fine until the "I know it all and let me tell you how its going to be" group infiltrates the site then it will become useless as the chat boards.

This is interesting, however, how long until someone is targeted for a burglary for what valuables they are "sharing" -- They better be careful how they implement this feature ..

eBay sellers, this is where your selling fees are going when they're not earmarked for executive compensation. To projects like this which do absolutely nothing to enhance or improve the marketplace.

On the other hand, I'll bet the announcement for this useless waste of time and resources will look great to investors and help the investment bankers pump and dump more shares.

Ebay can either delete its discussion boards, etc. or STOP being so ham-fisted in moderating them!  People get a taste of places like facebook and they don't want any part of Ebay's "community" platform.  We have the same discussion boards on FB that we had on Ebay....only we are free to post and act like adults!

Ebay has become like Big Brother (not the tv show) or like a (not so nice) mother looking over their kids shoulder or reading their diary. Who wants that? Ebay is already forcing themselves in everyone's business. Ebay did a good (sarc) job in destroying the community and now have absolutely no right putting their insincere nose and pushing their agenda onto anyone's social site.

Less eBay involvement in your life = less stress.

That being said, what does eBay even know about social anything?

''Social stuff'' from a company that goes out of its way to give sellers invisible magic DSRs, gives you on 5 in said DSR's if you DONT contact your buyer, hides buyer info (DUH ITS IN PAYPAL STUPID JD) and more?

When/if eBay ever decides to stop behaving the way they do then fine, until then ... anything social from eBay is a cruel/weird joke.

If you examine this on its face - its really though, NOT a social thing - but a way (as RIC said) to make money. ''tell us what you have or dont have and we will find you something to spend your hard earned money on''. BLAH - who needs eBay to spend YOUR money?!

Its similar to letting eBay have access to your inbox, or thier involvment in returns etc.

The less you involve them the better - they are King Midas in reverse (sorry Hollies).

No.  As a seller, it looks like another time waster, just like Facebook is.

I'm with Bidofthis.com ..how long til someone's house is burglarized or their business.  I asked that when Griff was promoting the like, want, own buttons a couple of weeks ago. If I still collected anything of value, the online world would be the last ones to know about it.  Sure not using those buttons since eBay gives out your contact info on the slightest whim.

Exactly Beth !!

When I sold on eBay, I once had a non-paying buyer who had a UID closed obtain my personal information through eBay which led to repeated phone calls begging to buy the item off eBay.

Come on eBay, the buyer never paid, transaction was cancelled, there is absolutely no reason to release my information under those circumstances.

ShelfLife (www.shelflife.net) has been up an running for over a year with significantly deeper functionality for collectors to manager their collections, a full marketplace that auto-matches buyers and sellers and a ton of great tools. This isn't innovation, it's imitation.

I think it's a lot of pseudo mumbo-jumbo geared toward the amateur collector.  Most savvy collectors know how to manage their collections.  This new feature has the unintended consequences of potentially attracting some mischief makers to prey on the casual or amateur collector.

Can you extract the EXIF data from eBa'al photos?

With that you can determine the time, date and exact coordinates of where the picture was taken.

Only iPhone users need to worry about EXIF data. Maybe that's why eBay's got a giant woodie for mobile app users.

Do we remember how good life was before JD slowly destroyed our businesses?

I was slightly outraged to hear, 'ebay actually started with collectors', Sure until JD chased collectors who buy AND sell off a stick with humiliation and over-control. Now that collectible sellers and buyers have moved on to their own websites and seller friendly venues which treat sellers like _customers_ , ebayzon wants them back.

Does it feel like an abusive boss showing up on your doorstep with a new promise after you've already moved on? Never again!

This Setify is another trap to waste valuable time that could be spent removing all ebayzon's tentacles from your customer base.

We will never forget or forgive.

J.D. - ''I just noticed that millions and millions of dollars of high-end collectibles are selling on sites other than ebay. Why aren't these sellers using ebay?''

Underling - ''Policy changes over the last several years have chased the sellers away, sir.''

J.D. - ''What idiot would institute policies that would drive business away like that?''

Underling - ''That would be you sir.''

J.D. - ''You're fired.
