Etsy Adds Field for Processing Time akin to eBay Handling Time

Managing buyer expectations is half the battle in ecommerce customer service. eBay tries to do this by showing shoppers the estimated delivery time, including sellers' handling time. Now Etsy is launching "processing time" to show shoppers the time it takes to make an item and put it in the mail once an order is placed.

"Adding processing times sets clear expectations for when your items will ship, improves the buyer experience, and can reduce unnecessary convos," Esy told sellers on Wednesday. "You are not required to choose a processing time when you list an item, and you can include processing time in your shipping profiles to save time."

All the details of how the processing times feature works is found on the Etsy announcement page, including what to do when waiting on information from a buyer in order to fulfill an order or when becoming backed up due to an unexpected influx of orders.

Etsy will release the feature to all sellers over the next week; sellers who want to start using the feature immediately can join the Shipping Improvements Team Prototype.

Some sellers were concerned that Etsy's processing time feature would trigger automated notices to customers - Etsy said it would not.

Do you think Etsy will eventually make processing time a required field?

What do you think of posting processing time (or handling time) in listings? Especially as we head toward the holiday shopping season, are there ways online sellers or marketplaces could make total delivery time more clear to online shoppers?

I usually ship quickly, however, that is my choice, I don't jump through hoops for anybody, lets hope that etsy doesn't get the same shipping time, free shipping fixation that ebay suffers from, if so, I'm outa-of there

Etsy is becoming Fleabay's Evil Twin.

Won't be long and Fleabay will be absorbing it. Here today and gone tomorrow.

That would be an interesting acquisition - what company might wish to acquire Etsy?

I don't have an issue with this.  That being said, I also have no control over what the Postal System does with the package once I mail it.  The only "reliable" method to know when the package will arrive is sending it overnight express.  I'm sure my customers wouldn't pay for that and I'm certainly not going to!  From time to time a package I paid extra to send Priority 2-5 day shipping has taken much longer to get to it's destination, when I have complained to the P. Office about it they stated they don't "promise" it will get there, now we know another reason the P. Office is in financial trouble.

If an order comes in before 1:00 p.m. I ship that day, after 1:00 it goes out the next day.  If it's a custom order I ship in 3 business days (as long as the customer isn't changing their minds every 10 minutes about what they want)...that's all I'm "promising" anyone!

@ Ina

It is not beneath Fleabay to acquire it.

Back about 10 years ago Fleabay took over UP4SALE. It was there one day and the next day you belonged to Fleabay. Gone Poof No Warning.

I don't see the investors selling. Etsy is differentiated enough from either Ebay or Amazon, that it's better off running solo.

It would be nice to see some "FOR REAL PHONE SUPPORT" added into their "improvement equation".

There have been seller complaints within their forums concerning both the Direct Payment and shipping snafus. This is retail and "THEIR" lack of phone support impacts, both seller and buyer. Not exactly in keeping with "LEAN" business theories. Creates ALL SORTS OF DELAYS.

It's nice to have the option to add that in.  It will work great for some, not so well for others.  As long as they don't try to do the one-size-fits-all thing...  I can't imagine they would make it mandatory.

I try to under-promise and then over-deliver.  It seems to work well, I have a lot of loyal customers.

Given that Etsy has a lot of hand-crafted items, having a place to specify the handling time seems like a good idea. Some sellers create items on-demand, meaning they can't ship out immediately, so having that information available in a consistent way is a good thing.
