eBay Glitch Makes Critical Data Disappear from Some Listings

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

eBay sellers are reporting that critical information from their product listings are disappearing today from some - but not all - of their listings. Wrote one seller on the eBay Technical Issues board, "Just got off the phone with eBay customer service. The representative I spoke with examined my listings, tried to input the vanishing information himself, and confirmed that indeed the system is not retaining data regarding item specifics, shipping details, and return details, on some listings."

Above: shipping information is missing from seller's listing.

The seller was told to urge anyone else having similar problems call eBay customer service and report it. "The more people who report this bug, the sooner it will be fixed."

Could the glitch affect sellers' Top Rated Seller status? Wrote one seller, "When I go to My eBay, it says "You should update 5 listings to meet the service requirements for Top Rated Seller" - but all the listings were 100% compliant when I listed them."

Right: How shipping information is supposed to look on eBay listings.

I just listed 3 new items within the past hour. While item specifics and shipping info is showing, none of my gallery photos are showing (and I'm not getting the "error" message that allows me to "fix" the issue with the photo). Also, all of my "returns accepted" information is missing on all 3 listings. The "glitches"....they just keep a comin! And my frustration...it just keeps a growin!

When things like this happen, the first question that comes to my mind is:

''HOW MUCH IS THIS GONNA COST ME?''

Update: I just checked and my return requirements are missing  in eBay's "Read Details" section from every single listing posted in the last 12 days. Luckily, I also post my return info directly on my listing but this will be an absolute mess for anybody that doesn't.

This is not a new problem. I reported this two weeks ago and they wrote a bug report (191414101). I had used batch edit to change the return policy details on all my listings (102). When going in as revise listing, I can see the changes, but cannot see changes when clicking on return policy details. A buyer cannot see the details either. I just called again and she is letting the technical dept. know I still have the problem.

Fleabay is a complete joke. I can't believe the Ho seduced corporate partners like ToysRUs into using their constantly broken website.

Haven't the genius developers at eBay ever heard of testing before deployment?

(Toys R Us is a BAIN company, that might explain it).
Hmmmmm?
Make sense to you now?
No disrespect intended, PEACE.

Ebay IS Ebain dude.

Everybody should also BOYCOTT Toys R Us, as I do.

I've checked several sellers that I know offer 1 day handling and NONE of them is showing their handling time on the listings.  It use to, but it is gone now.

I looked at a seller I knew had a 3 day handling time and this is showing just like it should.

When are they supposed to roll out those "red flags" for longer shipping times? Could that be what the glitch is about?

Does a day go by with out some sort of glitch on eBay? I can't remember the last glitch free day. Is there another major e-commerce site with so many issues? I don't think so.

Why is it okay for ebay to have all of these major glitches? But not okay for sellers to make any mistakes or have glitches, or get ill or even take a day off?
there are sellers on ebay right now who have 99.9% to 100% positive feedback on tens of thousands of transactions with 5.0's and 4.9's for trs ratings who have maligned by ebay because a very, very minute number of buyers said they did not ship fast enough, or the items was not as described, or they did not like the communication and guess what most of those are buyers who did not read anything or whom are chronic compainers or who did not get their item for free while trying scam a seller.
But oh no we cannot complain about ebay's mis-steps or glitches or constant testing that make our items disappear.
So what about this Mr. Donahoe? You are not perfect at all, as a matter of fact the way I see it you are horrendous, who is judging you Mr. Donahoe? We all know you read this stuff so come on let us hear your excuse for your mistakes. I guess the fact that you have been and still are viewed as the one of the worst ceo's ever points out your qualifications for this job was not a factor at all in acquiring the job, no you just had a lot of money and you know how to manipulate the stock market and investors, you know some politicians, judges and attorneys who are easily bribed. In fact you came from Bain and Co. the bribery kings of the world. The house of cards is pretty shaky, you better make some more acquisitions to cover up the loss of final value fees on ebay because many sellers have went elsewhere. Paypal and the taking final value fees on shipping may be covering up some, but we all know. How much do you pay these people who give you good write ups in the press, or give you a ethics award? that one was hilarious, we all know that was not true. Honest people do not have to pay others to say good things about them. So Skippy I just have one more thing to say, prison is going to be hell for you.

Our listings are still not showing our return policy as of 9am EST Monday August 9th. It does appear in the revise listing area.

EBay really needs to get on top of this and get it fixed!

I wonder which contract programmers carcass is flying from the korporate flagpole in San Jose for this little bru-ha-ha.

Certainly no manager low-middle or upper is going to swing.

Wow, this hasn't been so exciting since 1996 when eBay shut down for a few hours for a "programming" glitch. Remember Pierre??? Before Meg???

eBay needs to take a step back from imposing changes, make necessary repairs to the IT infrastructure and take as much time as necessary to get their own house in order.

From niggling little issues, to larger issues such as dropping listing details and omission of items in search results, it is clear eBay is facing significant IT challenges which even they apparently do not fully understand. The unending series of glitches seem to become more serious and effect larger numbers of sellers with each passing day.

The halt to system and policy changes should last as long as is necessary to effect internal reviews and repairs of eBay's apparently fragile IT infrastructure.

Following the massive repairs to the IT infrastructure, eBay should promise their sellers that all future changes will be better tested prior to being implemented so as to avoid future issues.

Continuing to force policies on sellers that require near perfection while failing to maintain fully functional IT systems is a double standard that a publicly traded company should avoid at all costs.

How can sellers build a business on a platform as fragile and unstable as the one eBay provides to it's sellers?

For the fees eBay demands from their sellers, the company should be able to provide a working system that is stable and fully functional at all times as opposed to the glitch prone system sellers are forced to work with and around everyday.

Investors have every right to be concerned given the company they invested in appears unable or unwilling to make the necessary IT improvements to maintain a fully functional marketplace on a consistent day in - day out basis.

It is time for eBay's Wall Street masters to start challenging this company with regard to the constant stream of system failures both large and small that plague the site on a daily basis and demand that the voluminous IT challenges be rectified once and for all.

Ric asks:

"How can sellers build a business on a platform as fragile and unstable as the one eBay provides to it's sellers?"

Simple answer, they can't and they are learning that one painful glitch at a time.

On a Brighter Note, we had our second Etsy sale today (after ALL 12 of our eBay listings ended last night with NO BIDS).

We are forging ahead with Etsy and are happy to have our Feebay escape plan in motion.

Received this message:

"Dear Don,

We want to let you know that for a few hours on August 3, we had a technical issue that caused some information (including item specifics, item condition, return policies and shipping) to be dropped from some seller listings on the site. The issue has been resolved; however, some of your listings were impacted. We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused.

Rather than have your items continue without all their original information, eBay has ended all of these listings. You can find your ended listings in your Unsold Item section of My eBay. Please review them to ensure that the item specifics, item condition, return policy and shipping information is as expected prior to relisting them using your usual listing tools.

We will credit your account for twice the insertion and features fees incurred on all the affected listings. You will receive at least $10 in total credits to offset any inconvenience caused by the need to relist your items. These credits can be viewed in the Account Summary section of My eBay within 7 days.

We will also be reaching out to the buyers who were bidding on any auction-style listings that ended early as a result of this issue. We will let them know that the listing ended early through no fault of yours and encourage them to check back to see if the item has been relisted.

As always, we want the experience on eBay to be problem-free for buyers and sellers. We’ll continue to work hard to make that the case. Again, please accept our apologies for the disruption to your business.

We appreciate your business and thank you for selling on eBay.

Sincerely,

Michael Jones
Vice President, Merchant Development"

The good news, we don't have a significant number of items listed on eBay.

After we finish shipping our Yahoo sales I'll take a look at whatever eBay hosed up this time :)

Don

This goes right along with the odd and bizarre "Free Shipping" notation I and others discovered AFTER the items had been SOLD.

This was NOT showing on all my listings or even all SOLD listings but it WAS showing on several of mine and I know others who had the same issue (reported to Ina).

I do NOT ship "free" and so it was a huge shock to me to see that my heavy item had a FREE SHIPPING notation--on MY sold item page.  However it seems as tho--thank goodness--the "free" part was NOT showing to buyers.

I got paid for the shipping by the buyers as a matter of course so I expect that they never saw this--can you IMAGINE the hue and cry if this HAD shown on the item in the buyers  PURCHASE HISTORY???

Geee------I guess the item is NOT as described IF the buyer is asked AFTER the sale to pay for the shipping and has a FIT because ebay told them it was FREE SHIPPING.

Imagine the hits to our FB and DSR's then!

And of course NO ONE at ebay wants to take responsibility for this!!!!

HOw long do you think any of US would last if WE had all of these glitches????

I left several months ago now and opened my own antique mall out of sheer necessity. I saw ebay literally falling apart before my eyes. What was once my only income was evaporating by the minute. I keep watching and waiting for someone to come to ebay's rescue but I think the possee has really left the building. Well you can't live in the past and dwell on what used to be I guess.

Life moves on and I'm still able to earn a living - reading that toy's is owned by Bain was interesting. Is ebay actually owned by Bain now as well? Just curious.

I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that ebay actually is down the drain and it's probably just a matter of time till their collapse. They might be able to spin off Paypal and keep that revenue stream going byt I fear ebay itself as a viable marketplace is truly doomed. Even with the PT Barnum theory in place they will eventually run out of suckers sooner or later - or maybe not - how many chinese are there?
