Yahoo to Renew Focus on Commerce, Going Beyond Ecommerce

The Queen of Yahoo internal memos Kara Swisher has obtained yet another from former PayPal President Scott Thompson, now head of Yahoo. In the memo as reported on AllThingsD, Scott wrote the following about the company's commerce initiative:

Commerce We will renew our focus on commerce, and I expect this newly created team to play a critical role in Yahoo!'s future growth. Our Commerce teams will build on Yahoo!'s massive reach and strong consumer relationships, but their charter will go beyond traditional ecommerce. The focus of this team will be driving higher ROI for advertisers and agencies that reach users on Yahoo! by closing the loop for them between user interests, advertiser spend, consumer intent, and purchase behavior. The foundation of the new Commerce group will be Autos, Shopping, Travel, Jobs, Personals and Real Estate. We expect to name the leadership of this business unit shortly.

Swisher, who broke the news yesterday that PayPal Vice President of Global Product & Experience Sam Shrauger was leaving the eBay unit, said she's heard Shrauger will be named head of Yahoo Commerce.

What do insiders Thompson and Shrauger know the rest of us don't?

Some possibilities.

1. PreyPal will soon be put up for sale.
2. The banksters are about to make PreyPal irrelevant.
3. The feds are closing in on PreyPal's Mafia like policies.
4. Thompson lost the ebafia CEO sweepstakes crap shoot to the outsider low achiever, Devil Wenig.
5. There's an enormous pay and perks differential between ebafia and Yahoo.

Doesn't look as if Yahoo Auctions are on Thompson's radar nor does he appear to be interested in small businesses.

In any case, these PreyPalsters take a thoroughly corrupt corporate culture to Yahoo so all of us should consider treading lightly on/with Yahoo.

Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson announced the company would be laying off 2,000 employees on Wednesday in order to take the ''next step toward a bold, new Yahoo.''

I
had to google to see if he had past employment with Bain.

Seems all these CEOs, including the new JCPenney's CEO Ron Johnson, the first thing they want to do is to cut jobs. Also CEO Brian Dunn just resigned after closing 50 stores and cutting 400 jobs.

Yahoo died years ago when they shut down their auctions site. With new Paypal CEOs, I doubt they can raise the dead.
Somehow all the new CEOs want to dump product, (except for Amazon) and just sell advertising. That's find and dandy, but you need traffic. Of course, when you own the counters, I imagine you can program the numbers to look very impressive.
Has anyone of them ever figured out that we all know how to go to Amazon, Macy's, Sears, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Bahama direct and don't bother to look at stock photos or click through unless it is off Google.

Hey!!

YAHOO

Re-start your auction site.

I know about 9 MILLION people who would switch in a NEW YORK MINUTE.

Just study (on auctionbytes of course) all the stupid mistakes the goofs at eaby made and don't do ANY OF THAT.

You could turn the whole company around.

And do your own payment system, call it Yahoo Money.

At least you have a brand that everyone knows.

Police the site, instead of cookie cutter punishing everybody for the sins of a few bad apples. Here's another tip, when a custome (i.e. seller who PAYS YOU) sends an e-mail, actually READ the e-mail. Stops all those annoying phone calls.

Ask how to do the payment system from the people you grabbed from pay-pal.

And HURRY UP would ya???

Yahoo is still quite relevant as a content aggregater. And judging by the huge numbers of comments posted on many of the articles, it's definitely popular. It would be good if they could leverage that success and build a *good* ecommerce platform.

@Ming: You may be right on #3. I saw an article recently about the feds investigating "non-bank" financial services - and I would suspect that Paypal fits in that category quite nicely.

The feds do not care if paypal is doing right or wrong, they just care how much money they are bringing in so they can get their CUT!

Paypal knows the drill, just PAYOFF the feds and they can go back to being as evil and corrupt as they want.  The fear of lawsuits etc will also go away.

Scott Thompson's memo is cryptic however, reading between the lines, small sellers should not hold out much hope for Yahoo to return to auctions.

Instead, it sounds like Yahoo will be a marketplace that will attempt to attract eBay's Diamond Sellers as well as the sellers that were approached by eBay to be Diamond Sellers but chose not to be associated with eBay.

When Yahoo makes a move to return into the ecommerce space, it will certainly shake up Mr Donahoe's plans for eBay.

Who knows.... Two years down the road, eBay's very survival may depend on the ability of John Donahoe to bring eBay's focus back to small sellers in order to restore marketplace GMV.

If yahoo got back in the game do not expect anything different than ebay or amazon or even paypal, especially when the guy is coming from paypal.

All we see with these companies is them recycling the SAME people.

These people switch jobs like we change our our underware.  The other guy is willing to take them in order to get trade secrets from the other company and when they are done with them the next company gets them and so on.

This is why the sellers and buyers end up with the SAME crap at all of them.

No matter what ANY of these companies do it is NEVER about us, it is always about how much more MONEY THEY CAN MAKE!

The sooner everyone realizes that ebay, amazon, yahoo, paypal and the rest of them are NOT our "friends, partners, team mates, pals etc", the better we will be in placing our loyalties where they should be and that is with what is best for US.

We are only dollar signs to them, they have NO loyalty for us which is why they are selling us down the river more and more for china sellers who can sell their junk for pennies and the box stores.

Heck, even our post office has sold us down the river for China and then want to cry to us to help them bail out of the mess THEY made.  They won't give us tracking for international pacakges but they will for CHINA!

I'm looking at this from a different angle: Thompson, Shrauger, and Donahoe are very much on a close knit basis. It makes sense, since eBay and Google do not play well together.

If you can't get along with #1 (Google), might as well have a vested interest in #2 Yahoo.

Even though Google rules, don't count Yahoo out - they still have a large worldwide reach.
