Are You Ready for Frankenstorm?

By: Ina Steiner

The Northeast and Atlantic states are prepping for a major hurricane dubbed "Frankenstorm" slated to hit next week. Events like this typically cause major shipping delays, power outages, and can damage inventory in cases of flooding - and Hurricane Sandy is meeting up with other weather activity in what could result in a "perfect storm."

One reader said he was getting ready and would put his stores on vacation as insurance against power loss if it looked like the storm was due to hit his area.

"Might be an idea to remind sellers on the east coast to have a game plan to execute in advance to guard against storm related power outages," he wrote. "When Irene hit, we lost power for a day, and mail was not moving for a couple of days due to floods etc... so I figure better to be prepared."

Sellers on the East Coast, are you preparing for the storm, and if so, what are you doing to prepare?

If you've been through a major storm before, feel free to share your war stories along with tips for sellers facing a possible outage.

My friends and I have been thru this before. We co-author a blog about eBay and ecommerce and we have one already done up about the Frankenstorm with some "get ready" ideas. it's here http://dsrsofourlives.blogspot.com/

And we've discussed several times in the past the "what if" scenairos of:
1. Freak of nature storms like this one...or the blizzards that have snowed several of us in the last few years

2. disablement - death - ours or close family... Seriously WHO knows your passwords to shut everything down for you if you are sick or in the hospital? or to just back you up and print out shipping stuff and pack it up??

3. Suppose any venue shuts you down - the 2 biggees both close you down and smother your listings and in one case, from experience, there is no way to recover them. So do you have a back up copy of your ebay listings that's transportable (meaning you can get it inspite of them?? having your listings stored in their inventory system is NOT an answer... and Amazon can be just as nuts so ...be prepared..

The last few years, people have been flooded out, burned out by wildfires, housefires etc and buried under snow or taken out of the loop by massive power outages so like the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts taught us..BE PREPARED (oh and read our blog..we could use some new readers!! )

Hoping that it will dump so much snow and ice on the white house we won't have to hear anymore from the failures inside.

Bring on the storm. The wimps on the east coast need something to cry about. We live in Northern Canada and don't even worry about the cold and snow until it gets about 10 feet deep.

Expect no help, assistance, or sympathy from eBay (in spite of hollow and insincere assurances to the contrary) with regard to shipping/processing delays resulting from power outages and delivery disruptions.

Inconvenienced buyers will ALWAYS be able to express their ''opinion'' with low DSR's.

In short, it's the Romney/Bain philosophy: ''You're on your own.''

Due to weather conditions we need to have patience in receiving payments and in shipping.  Power outages etc. slows our normal eCommerce life down.
Be safe all!

@mylifeisgood - Your life is good BECAUSE of who has lived in the White House for the last 4 years (and who will continue to live in the White House for the NEXT 4 years!). Since you seem to have amnesia, let me refresh your memory. Among other things, President Obama has:

• Overhauled the food safety system.
• Advanced women's rights in the work place.
• Ended Don't Ask, Don't Tell (DADT).
• Stopped defending DOMA in court.
• Passed the Hate Crimes bill.
• Appointed two pro-choice women to the Supreme Court.
• Expanded access to medical care and provided subsidies for people who can't afford it.
• Expanded the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP).
• Fixed the pre-existing conditions travesty in health insurance.
• Invested in clean energy.
• Overhauled the credit card industry, making it much more consumer-friendly.
• Created Elizabeth Warren's dream agency: The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
• Done a lot for veterans.
• Got help for people whose health was injured during the clean-up after the 9/11 attacks.

And that's just for starters. Read on!

• He's killed Osama Bin Laden.
• Eliminated several other Al-Qaeda leaders.
• Ended the War in Iraq.
• Begun the drawdown of forces from Afghanistan.

And even that isn't everything, but these are some VERY important points to remember. Also remember that the Republicans tried to block nearly all of these achievements!

RE-ELECT PRESIDENT OBAMA!!!

I wish I had not tweeted this article!! since some have used it for political propaganda.  Why is this allowed?  Could have been a good discussion.

Thank you sierra - well put!

Back to topic of storm prep which is different rural vs urban.  I'll comment on rural since that is where I live.

Make sure there is nothing loose in the yard or on the house.  That cute garden plaque can take out a window if airborne and statues in gardens fly.  Check for branches of trees that are dead or diseased and remove them. DO NOT TRIM BRANCHES NEAR POWER LINES!!!

Put BBQ in barn/garage and stow loose propane tanks in barn.

Have big pails, buckets and kettles full of water for toilet flushes and lots of bottled water for drinking.  Fill the tank on your car and tractor.

Make sure equipment such as generators, sump pumps and flashlights are working - buy more batteries than you think you'll need.  Know where both candles and matches are - one does no good without the other.

Land line with no cell or cell without no land line is not safe these days as either system can go out.  Emergency radio and small CB radio are good ideas.

Even if the whole house is not on a generator, a small generator can keep well running and keep fridge/freezer running.  And we all know that if the power goes out, do not open and close fridge doors.

Don't forget the pets.  Make sure to have needed supplies and plenty of fresh bottled water for them too.

Stay safe indoors - leave the outdoor live shots to the professionals who know when to beat a retreat.

Sierra - right on.  I can add to your post but this isn't the place.  Its amazing what the president has been able to accomplish in spite of that obstructionist House of "NO".

Being a lifetime East Coaster I am used to the Northeaster Storms and Hurricanes that visit us every year. The blog that I posted to http://dsrsofourlives.blogspot.com/
has some "must dos to prepare for hurricanes" as well as some added ideas from the people from a Yahoo group I belong to. If this is your first East Coast storm be sure to read my Blog Post and BATTEN DOWN THE HATCHES

Thank you, Sierra! ❤

Sometimes I wish this site had a feature that would allow us to permanently ignore certain posters. Not that I'd automatically block someone that I disagreed with once and awhile... (after all, who wants an echo-chamber?) But there are definitely a few sour-apples who consistently make this a less desirable place for all, and who take ordinary conversations WAY off track.

@Sierra,   please take your political pandering elsewhere.   This is not the place for more propoganda, and millions of us are tired of hearing about it.   At least have the courtesy to list some of his many failures, since you seem so keen on listing his 'successes'.   (And HE didn't get Osama... our MILITARY did.)

By the way, MILLIONS more of us will be voting for Gov. Romney.   We believe he'll be more careful in spending OUR money than 0 ever was. Unsustainable spending and record government debt coupled with judicial appointments who think legislating from the bench, rather than interpreting the Constitution... is a recipe for socialistic disaster.

Do not forget that a government large enough to 'give' you everything is also large enough to take it away.   And nothing can be given to one person without first confiscating from another.

~ tired of being robbed by government

I'm in Florida for heaven's sake - on any given day ONE of the candidates for Pres or VP are popping up here. Then the political ads are non-stop back to back to back. Tampa Bay area has the 3rd highest saturation of political TV ads in the country. There is NO escape.

@Beth
- I took a look at your blog. Like the name.  Refreshing! I bookmarked it for later exploration!

One thing I did not see mentioned. Have a car charger handy for your cellphone, smart pad, etc...
It comes in handy if your power goes out for several days. Also, some cars will charge your phone while they are turned off, others have to be running for the charger to work. Found this out during an ice storm in the Midwest several years ago.
