eBay Turns on Business Policies by Surprise

A couple of sellers are wondering if eBay is experiencing a glitch related to its "Business Policies" feature after they discovered it had turned on by itself on newly created listings.

One of them sought help on the eBay discussion boards after noticing a change in their "Immediate payment Required" settings.

Once another seller said it appeared that it was related to Business Policies, the original poster said that did appear to be the case:

"Thank you!  It appears that you are right. I followed your instructions to opt out. Initially I was unable to opt out, as I still had 8 listings (from this morning) with those business policies. So I ended those active listings, opted out, then relisted them. That seemed to work, and my listing page is back the way it was before. Thanks for your help on this."

A third seller said they had just stumbled into the same problem with a new listing - "I never have before, nor have I ever used business practices," they wrote.

eBay Business Policies can be a useful feature, but not when it mysteriously turns on by itself.

Does it turn on immediate payment or turn off?

Apparently the Business Policies feature was activated without the sellers' knowledge, which turned on Immediate Pay.

The person responding to the original poster wrote, "It appears your account was opted in to using business policies without you realizing it. If you edit that payments policy at the link below you can disable immediate pay on the payments policy," and the OP said that was the case.

Ah yes.  Another example of eBay grabbing hold by enabling an option, instead of lending a hand by offering the choice first.  Another red light you have to switch OFF if you don’t want it, instead of the other way ‘round.

Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.”

This is a bad problem. Encountered this problem this weekend from Buyers asking why they had to make immediate payment in order to purchase from me which I never selected. Went to my policies and it is not selected, so this is happening throughout Ebay with no input from the Sellers. I have had other Buyers who have not run into this problem so it's intermittent. Wait a minute, considering that some people that come here to post claim that Ebay has no problems with its site, I guess we're all just imagining this.

eBay needed money to pay for its New Year party and was short cash - they need what’s on hand to pay stockholders and pay off the Wall Street people who keep recommending the stock.

So they went to their piggy bank - sellers - and turned on immediate pay so that buyers HAD to pay immediately and therefore the money would flow NOW into eBay’s bank instead of a few days from now.

The answer is always simple and always the same - San Jose Mafia tactics

The software didn’t change “by accident “.

Hard to tell whether the issues with IPR are Business Policies or ebay's new autopay for offers and auctions.

Not sure what the big deal is, I've required immediate payment on all sales for years and I am very happy they are forcing immediate payment for auctions.. I might actually use them again.
I don't have time to be chasing people down to get a payment.

I wonder what the percentage of buyers/bidders back out once they're required to choose a payment method.

I know I have and I'm a typical eBay buyer. . . .

I only bid on this item because it DIDN'T have that requirement, otherwise I would not have bid on it.

I hope I get this one!

Business policies are one of the most irritating features. The seller can't create a duplicate business policy but the system automatically creates as many duplicates as it likes. Another half-baked idea bought to you by eBay.

Why would a buyer NOT want to turn on "immediate payment"?

"Why would a buyer NOT want to turn on "immediate payment"?

If you mean seller instead of buyer, I don't want immediate payment, because most of my buyers purchase multiple items and don't do it all at once.  Just had someone purchase 26 books and it took about 3 days for them to complete the search of my store which had almost 1,000 books listed.

And because it's my store and I should be able to set up how my customers pay for things without Ebay's interference.  If you chose to have it, that's fine if it works for you.

All your buyer had to do was "add to cart" and once he was done sorting through the 1000 books you have completed checked out...

@DailyDorisUK
"The system works" --  except for when it doesn't.

This is not the first time this issue has come up.  My account which I never set up for business rules, as our API automation sends the data at the SKU level, has often been dumped into "business policies" - and my API feeds after that won't correct it.   I have to go in and manually disable.   It can become a pain when the global switch doesn't work - as I have 35k listings.

The company is less "fragmented" than Amazon. It is always a wonder why so many changes are made that affect so many systems at once.  Is there no sandbox 'testing' being done?

"All your buyer had to do was "add to cart" and once he was done sorting through the 1000 books you have completed checked out... "

They then risk losing the book if someone else decides to buy it while in the cart.

My question is why do some sellers get so bent out of shape when other sellers want to run their store their own way?  If you want your buyers to pay immediately, then do it.   Or make snarky comments such as your 1,000 books as if they don't believe it.  A lot of book sellers on Ebay have hundreds of books in their store and not just the mega sellers.
