eBay Sets AI Loose on Sellers with No Warning

eBay added a new icon in the listing flow on mobile apps, but a seller who clicked on the icon to see what it did discovered it replaced her entire product description with different text - and she had no way to recover her original description.

It turns out eBay unleashed generative AI (artificial intelligence) on its mobile apps, but did so without informing sellers and without labeling the icon.

"A weird thing that happened today," the reader told us. "I was writing an eBay description, had it just the way I wanted it, when I noticed a little icon and clicked it just to see what it does. It rewrote my entire description based only on the title and item specifics in some weird, seemingly AI-generated text."

What was most concerning - "There is no undo button and so I lost everything: the condition description, the details about the decoration, the likely maker, which I did not put in the title or item details because it's just a guess, & more. It didn't even get the measurements right!"

In this case, the seller had entered a description *then* clicked the icon, but the premise of the tool is that it can provide a description based on the least amount of effort on the seller's part.

eBay CEO Jamie Iannone gave Wall Street analysts a heads up it was working on the new capability in early May. As we reported at the time, the CEO said eBay was in the process of integrating the ChatGPT API into the core listing flow.

Iannone explained sellers would soon be able to pre-populate categories and item specifics from a single photo, "enabling them to spend less of their time inputting inventory and more on growing and managing their businesses."

eBay promised long ago it would not introduce features or policies without giving sellers advance warning but has not been sticking to that commitment; it has yet to announce a Spring Seller Update where news of the AI feature might have expected to have be announced. (See second update below.)

The seller who found out about the feature the hard way today told us, "I'm not sure if this is eBay or my phone, but people need to know they click that button at their own risk!! I could find no info online about this phenomenon."

Update 5/25/2023: Sharing an image below of the eBay AI icon on the eBay mobile app (image generously provided by the seller).

Update 5/28/2023: We noticed today that while eBay didn't inform sellers about the (unlabeled) AI icon that suddenly appeared last week, eBay did mention it would be testing AI features. It was buried in a post on the Seller Announcement Board by the head of eBay US Adam Ireland about eBay's first-quarter earnings published 3 weeks prior to the icon appearing:

"Many of us have heard of Generative AI, like Chat GPT, which is certainly a hot topic in the news. We're currently in the process of creating a plug-in that will allow you to auto-generate item descriptions based on content already available across the web. And soon we'll roll out tests for sellers to pre-populate categories and item specifics from a single photo - so you spend less time creating listings and more on growing and managing your business."

The post was titled, "eBay's Quarterly Business Results," with no indication it included news about new future testing of an experimental technology. Make of that what you will, but it seems pretty clear AI testing will continue.

eBay can't find a way to increase their sales on a selling platform, that tells you that the CEO is a fake, not an expert, fee churning fraud in the form of pay per click promoted listings has not increased sales, they have destroyed sales as sellers pull billions of dollars of ghosted listings off the failed marketplace.  This was not written by an AI Chat Box Jamie, this is your reality, step down now for your own good.  I'm sure like Wenig you are waiting to be canned so you can collect your 50 million bucks like he got.

They are going to coddle laziness just like they coddle theft and abuse.

If you are just going to derive the description from other listing data couldn’t you just 86 the whole description? Wouldn’t that be the real time saver? Feedback rendered irrelevant, now descriptions rendered irrelevant. What a total waste of resources.

The problem here is that someone put the words INTELLIGENCE and EBAY in the same sentence - when they are clearly polar opposites.

Truth be told - if you have item specifics and pictures - why do you need a description to begin with?

Its 2023 - are the pics and prefilled bullet points (item specifics) not enough?

But never let it be said that eBay has EVER innovated - unless it has to deal with stealing sellers ideas, money or items.

“ Truth be told - if you have item specifics and pictures - why do you need a description to begin with?”

Selling OTS mass produced items common and ‘unsurprising’ attributes?  No argument.  And clearly that’s a ‘best match’ to eBay’s myopic eCom bandwagoning over the past decade.5.  No doubt for a majority of sellers now, new and second-hand.

But there are (much less these days, by design?) still some who would brave the gauntlet of trying to list an item with ‘specific imperfections’, or certain attributes like those inherent to the difference between true vintage and modern.  Elements that no robot can predictably assimilate and more importantly appropriately apply, no matter how many virtual synapses they byte-stick together.  And that all assumes a benefit of doubt favoring eBay’s ability to actually parse out appropriate item specifics for a given item as a baseline.  Jury’s still out on that one.

Anyway, those folks of the truly unique, OOAK ilk need free form space to ‘describe’ their wares.  Because pics and inapplicable attributes alone are prime ingredients in the recipients for SNAD stew.

Now all this surely also encompasses the possibility of developing some kind of listing filter that provides the ‘removal’ of a description, under item conditions that wouldn’t require a redundant ‘description’, with an ability TO include a description if the seller thought it was needed for items where a check box list isn’t enough.

But that would also require eBay to actually do something really innovative to support a wider, more disparate marketplace - with clear demarcations (think classic vs new Coke) - than they have neither competence nor care to do.

So now, those sellers, and you know who you are, are Andromeda, tied to a rock.  And eBay is no Perseus.  They’re the ones who released the Kraken.

I can understand the trepidation of listing non common/older items that need a REAL description - my rational "arguing for it" was, to save everyone time and space - and because I dont think that eBays "bang on" AI even bothers to look at anything beyond title and MAYBE some item specifics.

eBay doesnt care for them (long form listing descriptions - as you could put ANY 5 words there to satisfy their D- listing robots and (heaven help you if you make a mistake in the listing - ie the pic and the item specifics say one thing and your long form description say another - thats a SNAD sir!).

eBay could care less if ypur item listing is detailed, if it includes links to manuals or other important data, and customers aka eBay snowflake buyers - just ignore it all too ... so ....

Personally I dont care wither way - its about making sales - and what ever it takes to get there except for eBays clickbait money trap.

When it comes to AI with eBay you can bet there will be problems.  AI is only as good as the information it is fed.  eBay with their vast amount of glitches and employees that do not have enough experience to sell on line, or the knowledge of eBay systems and procedures end up with G.I.G.O. (Garbage In, Garbage Out).

I have another name for AI - ABSOLUTE IDIOT!!!
I type in a couple of letters on something to see what AI will come up with
such as the name of a company and I get everything but the company.
If you type in say RO for robert kaufman, you get yardage, fat quarter,
wilmington pritnts and so on.  Maybe, if you are lucky about half-way through
the list it might throw in roberr kaufman.  Dumb from the get go!
I would love to meet the person that developed it so i can punk him.  Worst
thing ever!

What is the RIGHT way for ebay to have began this program?

First, I would have started with DESKTOP not mobile.  Adding the feature that shows the Generated Text along with the one you manually created, allowing the lister to CHOOSE none, all, or part of the information.

Desktop is where most businesses list from.

And of course a really big HEADS UP would have been appropriate too.

@Scott Brown

eBay's mind is wrapped around the buyer, hence the focus on mobile

I don't buy or sell on eBay with mobile myself

My search returns on average 6500 items in listed order

I see very very few promoted listings

Right now I don't see any

eBay would have no reason to hide listings unless the seller is a BAD seller

I've used ChatGPT for some time now...it's pretty interesting, and the Elementor editor in wordpress has added it as an option. I was in a training online event and watched it generating CSS and HTML code from a description in a flash. apparently it did a pretty decent job, but it always needs editing. With descriptions for products it often gets details wrong... it's good for a first draft.. but be careful

*** ChatGPT ***

ChatGPT is scary interesting….and is the future. It’s time for Sellers to understand that AI is about to explode within all industries. For example…very soon, customer support will no longer be with a human, but rather a robot.

We don’t live in the 80’s anymore.

Stone Cutter, AI is garbage just like eBay management who are working smoke and mirrors scams in a vain attempt to keep their jobs a little longer, the founder placed his right hand assistant on the Board of Directors.  It is just a matter of time now where the entire upper management team is escorted out the door for following Devin Wenig's fee churning business plan,  Numbers don't lie, eBay has lost sales volume for 8 consecutive quarters, no AI can spin lies to cover up the massive failures of Jamie Walmart and his team.

You do realize that Shripriya Mahesh has been involved with eBay since 2001, she's been promoted to the Board of Directors. It's not like she doesn't know everyone on the Board. . .

You say "AI" is garbage, "AI" can fly a 747 all day long without fatigue something a human pilot can't do.

"AI" can make a decision in nanoseconds, it takes humans microseconds to seconds for the same decision.

The richest men on Earth know "AI" is coming and most are afraid of it because it can think faster and make better decisions than humans can. .

@Tool

I copied your Leatherman search and pasted it into my browser.  I got 2 Sponsored listings at the bottom of each page.  Not bad, though, considering that there are 120 items per page.
