After another case of an eBay default setting changing due to an apparent glitch, sellers may want to make a habit of checking their settings before performing routine tasks.
An eBay moderator chimed in on a thread about an incident that occurred on March 2nd where sellers printed shipping labels and discovered eBay used their PayPal account as a funding source instead of their preferred source.
The original poster said they noticed eBay started charging their connected PayPal account for shipping labels instead of available funds "sitting on eBay's books" or at least their Visa debit card they'd set up as their preferred method of paying for selling costs. "Any ideas on why this would change,"
the seller asked.
The original poster checked the default settings on the advice of other sellers and said it had mysteriously changed. "I changed it back on my next shipment and it is now deducting funds from my money on eBay."
Another seller confirmed it happened to them as well - "It happened with several labels before I caught it." That seller said the same glitch had happened to them twice before and made a point of noting they were a decades-long seller, an IT expert, and an eBay Community Mentor before adding, "I did NOT change it myself."
They also said, "There's usually a year or so in between these instances, so it's not an everyday problem, but it causes a big mess every time it's changed without our knowing it."
A third seller confirmed it happened to them as well. "Glad this was posted. It's happening to me too, out of no where, and I didn't change any settings."
A fourth seller confirmed it had happened to them in the past. "I've had mine changed from Pending Funds to Pay Pal once. Now, I always check to make sure it's right before continuing."
On Monday morning, the eBay moderator said he would report the issue and would return to let sellers know if he heard anything back.
There have been similar issues reported over the years where eBay settings mysteriously change - and they also tend to be chronic issues. Two such examples involve default settings for the eBay Global Shipping Program and default settings for accepting offers, though usually there's an accompanying debate over whether such issues are glitches or are done purposefully as part of an unannounced policy change.
Such incidents are often more than minor annoyances since they can have major ramifications to sellers.
