Keeping Up with Changes to eBay Feedback

By: Ina Steiner

eBay feedback changes used to be few and far between, but the company made some significant changes to feedback during the last quarter of 2023 - a time of year sellers loathe to see any changes as they're busy with holiday orders. (As any longtime seller can attest, change precipitates glitches.)

On November 1st, we reported that sellers had been unable to find recent feedback, and some said it suddenly appeared as if they had not left any feedback for buyers ("Sellers Report eBay Feedback Is 'Messed Up'").

A week later, eBay confirmed that the changes users were seeing were intentional and were not due to a glitch. "We recently updated the default sort to highlight the most relevant feedback for your potential buyers."

eBay also began allowing buyers to upload images when leaving feedback this year, though it did not make the images publicly available. In early November, eBay began allowing sellers to view those images, though they were still not viewable to shoppers.

That changed this month - on Monday, eBay announced it had begun making buyer-uploaded images available publicly for multi-quantity items. In its December 18th post on the Selling board (not on the Seller Announcement board!), eBay wrote:

"Over the past few months, we've been working to improve the feedback experience for buyers on eBay. We are making these changes in order to give potential buyers better insight into your products.

"Starting last month, eBay sellers have been able to preview images on their sold multi-quantity items feedback. With the success of the program thus far, we are starting to make those images available to buyers as well. We will continue to test images on feedback into 2024.

"Richer text and images in feedback can add credibility and drive sales by instilling additional confidence for interested buyers as they shop. To date, we've already collected almost a million images and the vast majority are associated with positive feedback and showcase the great products and positive experiences buyers have with our eBay sellers. Existing policies related to feedback and feedback removal will also apply to images.

"These updates will help to add trust to reviews, increase buyer confidence and drive conversion for your listings."

As we previously reported, eBay revealed in a FAQ that it had built an "AI driven moderation model to ensure no inappropriate photos are displayed on eBay."

We've noticed threads on the eBay boards from users reporting they're unable to leave feedback on some transactions - it's not clear if eBay's latest tweaks are leading to those glitches.

No doubt we'll hear much more about the pros and cons as eBay continues to roll out the images in feedback feature in the New Year. Feel free to leave feedback below about changes to eBay feedback this year.

"AI driven moderation model". Have fun and good luck, sellers! eBay's fabulous, magical AI has been a dismal failure so far.....

Ptui! @ AI

Like everything else fleecebay does its useless. They aren't capable of doing the simpliest thing without screwing something else up. Whats with the HELPING THE BUYER ON FEEDBACK. The sellers are again treated like useless noise. The arogance will never end. Fleecebay is one dirty, arrogant, slimy, miserable company. Their moral compass is so screwed up its a wonder they can find the bathrood without a flashlight and a roadmap.

%100 out of touch

Every stupid idea they have to “fix” things (that don’t need fixing) cause more and more problems

The reasons buyers and sellers leave isn’t because of pictures in feedback or anything like it.

Very very poor management…. But who knows - maybe this and balloon animate Jaime’s magic can do???

With all the things needing correction or attention on Ebay a group had to work on this? Feedback has become just about one in twenty sales left for me. I do not leave FB for a buyer unless they leave for me first. As a buyer I leave feedback when item is received and I am satisfied with the item. On the rare occasion that I have a problem I contact seller first then Ebay directly. This year my Ebay sales are about the same as last year; but my Etsy sales have exceeded Ebay’s for the first time.

Negative feedback NEVER goes away now. That makes me mad enough quit! I already quit. I double quit!
They can make the images visible but they won’t make the seller replies visible. Effin d-heads.
They better start looking for some stuff to sell after they drive off all the sellers. They can “improve the experience” for buyers all day but that won’t amount to a hill of beans when there’s nothing to buy.

I tried to leave FB for a seller the other day and there was no 'leave feedback' button. At first I thought it was because even though it was delivered, ebay's tracking still said out for delivery, but after the tracking updated there as still no 'leave FB" button. So my seller misses out on a positive FB from a buyer. wtg ebay.

The changes Ebay made are definitely negatively impacting small guys.
Barely any buyers leave feedback and Ebay made it count a lot in algorithms to get you sales or no sales. On top of it you may sell 30 items but have 2 feedbacks left- how do you think this affects your sales? What do you think prospective buyers think when all they see is that you got 2 feedbacks. Do they think they can take advantage of you because you are inexperienced and sell a little?
All the changes Ebay is making within the last at least 2-3 years are only helping bigger businesses and partners.

We got our first picture on feedback two weeks ago. The picture is about as X rated and pornographic as they come. The picture is still there after 2 weeks for all to see. I am real curious to see how long it takes before ebay gets in trouble for the distribution and proliferation of these images. Also on a sidenote way to trash up your marketplace ebay.

No, your posts here are not tax deductible.  They have no, uh, monetary value.
