eBay International Seller Update Includes Category Changes

eBay announced a "June" Seller Update this morning in certain countries, including Germany and Ireland, with news of category changes coming in September.

Here's what eBay told Irish sellers, where it made the announcement June 15:

"This month's update is packed with new features built to help you connect with customers, make your listings more discoverable, and increase security.

"First off, we have an update on the latest category changes rolling out in September that will help make your listings easier to find in search both on and off eBay.

"Your Shop is the perfect platform to build your brand and grow your business. This month, we're announcing new features like improved newsletter templates and updated category navigation.

"Finally, we've added extra security to your eBay account and more flexible payout options.

"These are just a few of this month's highlights. Read about all the new features, tools, changes and updates by clicking the links below."

Clicking through to the category-changes page, eBay told Irish sellers:

"We will release updates to our category structure from 20th September 2022. This is to provide a more intuitive buying, selling and search experience. Check back on this page after 18th August to see if any of the categories you currently list in are affected."

Whether or not eBay announces a Seller Update in the US or UK this month, category changes are platform-wide, so sellers everywhere can expect to see an August announcement about September changes to categories.

Yeah, good luck with that! Have you ever actually tried to make sense of those jumbled charts. Can nothing just stay the way it is for longer than a few months at a time? They literally update categories multiple times a year. Are they ever going to get it right one of these times?

Ha! Been trying to grow my business on eBay for 20 years. Easy peasy during the Whitman years but once Donahoe came onboard, and every CEO after, it has been impossible.

Stop the BS eBay--small sellers know that you have most of us tethered with hidden selling limits. 15 years of patterns don't lie. Just when you think that you are gaining traction after a few days of great sales its crickets until your sales go back down.

No matter how many listings you list sales stay about the same about every month. And I also see a pattern of sales falling anytime a return is opened. If it is isn't a pattern it is a heck of a coincidence. And eBay's never ending fee rises ensure that sellers are peddling backwards.

Rexford, you're absolutely right. In 2008 Donahoe gave a "pep talk" telling the eBay faithful ("sellers") that the new upstart that was threatening to compete with them would be "squashed like a bug" (paraphrasing). This got the attendees as excited as if Knute Rockne was cheering them on.

Donahoe and the list of CEOs hasn't delivered on that promise.

That "upstart" competitor? Why, that was AMAZON, in case you hadn't guessed. Amazon long ago surpassed eBay by having revenue of 469.8 billion USD (2021), while eBay had 10.27 billion USD (2020; it's lower now). Bezos could purchase eBay on his Amex card now, and Donahoe is of course known for starting eBay on its slide, in part by fudging the feedback system to make it useless.

The largest buying audience is now the Millennials and they go to Amazon for everything. Ebay is grandmas website filled with outdated products.

Rexford is 1000% correct. Once JD initiated rolling blackouts and undisclosed selling limits, not to mention hiding listings and then having the gall to add to the TOS wording that just because you paid for a listing didn't mean anyone would ever see it, sort of put the nail in the coffin of growing a business.
