Stunning News: eBay Kills off Adult Only Category

By: Ina Steiner

eBay is eliminating the "Adult Only" category in a stunning development. It emailed certain sellers on Thursday, and the new policy can be found on the eBay website where it states:

"Effective July 15, 2021, the Adult Only category will no longer be available for new listings."

However, the email eBay sent to sellers on May 13 shows a date of June 15; it's unclear if eBay decided to move up the date or if one of the dates was published in error.

The text of the email follows:

We have revised our Adults Items policy. Starting June 15, 2021, items showing sexual activity, sexual content or sexually suggestive poses will no longer be allowed on eBay.com. Everything Else > Adult Only will no longer be available as a category. No new listings will be allowed in the Adult Only category and good-til-cancelled listings will be ended upon their renewal date.

If you still have items in the Adult Only category on June 15, we will begin removing them. You may relist items that comply with the updated policy.

Please familiarize yourself with the updated policy. Not all Adult Only category items will be allowed to be relisted. To determine which items can be revised and relisted in an appropriate eBay category, please see below.

The email included charts showing which items sellers would be barred from selling entirely and which items sellers could move to other categories. Some key provisions include the following:

- Items including adult DVDs, magazines, video games, and domain names will no longer be allowed on eBay.

- Adult art and collectibles may be relisted in a category outside of Adult Only if they don't contain sexual content and if they follow certain guidelines.

- Adult clothing, jewelry, sex toys and accessories can be revised and moved to other categories if they follow certain guidelines.

- And adult books and music can be revised and moved to other categories if they follow certain guidelines.

Some sellers wonder if the ban on adult items has to do with managed payments - initially eBay prevented sellers who were enrolled in the new payments program from listing certain items such as Adult Items, and Coins and Bullion. But in February 2020, former eBay executive Marni Levine, in addressing questions about Managed Payments category exclusions, said they would all be included eventually.

One seller in a thread on the eBay boards said they believed the problem stemmed from payment processors, writing in part, "Even though eBay reps repeatedly told me it wasn't going to be a problem. In my opinion, this was pressure placed on eBay by banks/VISA/MC to get rid of categories with high incidents of fraud. Never mind that it's digital adult content that has high fraud and not tangible items. Unfortunately, in my experience with high risk merchant accounts, the banks lump all of it into the same category."

A seller on a Reddit thread about the new policy said, "I think it has to do with managed payments," but another seller responded, "It did in the beginning, but not now. I sell adult items and am on managed payments."

On eBay's site describing the new policy, it published the following:

Why does eBay have this policy?
We want to make adult items available to those who wish to purchase them and can do so legally, while preventing those who do not wish to view or purchase these items from easily accessing them.

The overwhelming question from sellers on the boards (on and off eBay) seems to be, where else can they list such items?

With this new assault and the endless wave of equally stupid insults from eBay over the years, I was remembering how I felt many years ago when I realized I was really stupid for building my business that THEY controlled and I have zero, no, none, not one say so in it.  How happy I am that I quit eBay all those years ago.

Wish there was a place to just sell my stuff and enjoy the whole process without eBay and eBay-like crap.

I read ecommercebytes and cringe with every edition.  THANK YOU INA FOR ALL THE WORK YOU DO TO PUT OUT SUCH AN INFORMATIVE PAPER EACH TIME.

My comment was going to be "well, this is a great business opportunity for someone to create a adults only/sex site then" but it seems there's already someone on here doing this & I'm sure they'll have plenty of competition once the word gets out, so get out there fast!! Business wise it's not a smart decision but I appreciate the notion of attempting to distinguish true art vs porn because there is a difference, and it would take more words than I feel like writing to explain, but as an "artist" myself just trust me on this & because there was a controversy about this exact notion when I was in undergrad art class years ago.

To be honest there should have already been a site up & running for videos, sex toys, etc., anyway. The "special request" panties & well-worn socks communities already have their own sites up & running & many are connected to prostitution as I discovered on Poshmark when I went down that connected rabbit hole one night. Believe me, Poshmark IS a social app & if you don't think so just start poking around more & you'll see what is really going on aside from selling clothing. Lots of "hit me up" especially around the men's jockstraps posts & women's well-worn socks & panties which they're supposed to not sell or promote but they still sneak it in & they also are promoting personalized videos, etc. for more money, the whole "bundle an item & we'll talk". But it turns out the bundles are not private like everyone thinks they are. Still, they have Serena Williams as their frontwoman who has a ton of baby clothing sold in her closet & yet they still allow this allegedly banned behavior to occur by not strictly enforcing. They remove them & then they just come back, repeat.  Maybe eBay is trying to follow suit as Mercari as well as Poshmark doesn't allow sex toys, videos, etc., to be sold.

On a side note, I received an eBay survey the other day after browsing as a "customer" and the survey asked about their image, etc., and a lot about sneakers & whether I considered myself a "sneakerhead" um, NO eBay, just, no. Just an FYI.

To Rexford and SpikeSoleil,

Thank you for defending reason from a ''misinformed'' individual who is trying to blame the President for ebay's stupidity.

Plenty to be annoyed at - I get it... but I, for one, am happy to see a site put forth a more "family friendly" image. I'm for free speech and the legality for people to make and consume porn, but I think its horrible soul-sucking trash, so I'm glad it will be off of eBay. As for the "suggestive stance" or whatever, yes, it's annoying that they aren't more specific, but I think we all know what they mean.

I don't sell in the adult category, but the words "sexually suggestive poses" are concerning. Many videos, books, posters, etc. may have covers that could be interpreted as "sexually suggestive" -- depending on who is censoring the items.

This can't end well.

"this was pressure placed on eBay by banks/VISA/MC to get rid of categories with high incidents of fraud. Never mind that it's digital adult content that has high fraud and not tangible items."

This is just not true! The highest fraud categories on eBay are actually ELECTRONICS (computers, fancy phones, etc.) thanks to eBay's buyer-worship mentality that encourages buyers to commit return frauds.

Ebay removing this category has nothing to do with concerns over FRAUD, if eBay cared about fraud they'd crackdown on other categories where Fraudulent listings are as much as 80% of the entire category like Asian and Chinese Antiques are all misrepresented as "Antique" when they are clearly new.

The issue I suspect is the PC WOKE crowd object to the Adult Items and just you can't have those snowflakes upset. So to appease, eBay genuflects and dumps the entire deal.

The reality is, there are over 1 Billion websites in the world. Among the TOP ten of that 1 Billion 2 (or 20 percent) are adult sites with 7 Billlion visitors combined in a month. Which is 1 Billion more than TWITTER gets according to GOOGLE.

So, for eBay to turn away from this market, the only explanation is clearly not a lack of demand from a business standpoint, but one of Political Correctness. Cancel Culture strikes again.

“ ... the words "sexually suggestive poses" are concerning.”

Sure are.

First, has anybody at eBay ever seen a TV commercial? Does the phrase ‘sex sells’ ring a bell? Have you ever seen an auto show that didn’t have some ‘suggestive’ model next to it on it’s revolving platform? Not just cars either. Everything screams use this, and you up your odds of bumping uglies.

While eBay listings themselves (that are not necessarily ‘adult’) don’t typically try to attach something ‘suggestive’ to them, there are plenty of products out there that already do in their packaging, subliminally in most cases - but others are blatantly obvious. And there are lots of items that have nothing to do with the genre’, but may just happen to exhibit a pose, or flash of thigh, whatever. Clothing, underwear, beach wear, lipstick, perfumes, lots of ‘hygiene’ related products in fact.

In fact, some non-adult products are presented more ‘suggestively’ than some smut rag content is.

Are those to be subjected to this scrutiny and possible removal too?

See, it’s not the ‘idea’ of a ‘G’ rating restriction that is the issue. Private entities have every right to try to keep their own little enclaves all unicorns and rainbows if they want - even to their financial detriment. But it comes down to where and when to apply the grade. Who decides? What is the ‘criteria’? Where is the ‘line’?

Kinda important to have that all clearly defined - so, you know, anyone who wants to list something can avoid appearing to be all perverted and such, and probably sanctioned. But - good luck with that. See, mankind (well, some of the more ‘Puritan’ among them) has been trying for thousands of years to dictate precisely what constitutes ‘inappropriate sexuality’ and hasn’t managed to nail that down yet.

The best that’s been done has been to have some currently empowered anti-smut czar somewhere declare that they couldn’t define it - but they’d know it when they saw it.

Sounds a lot more like opinion than fact will rule this particular ‘enhancement’. That, and a questionable sales decision to purposefully forego significant income potential based on those ‘opinions’. One thing for certain though, whether they close the back room or not. Based on almost a decade and a half of past performance, many will stand accused and will be convicted undeservedly. And many who may be ‘clearly’ inappropriate and get ‘reported’, will still get a pass somehow.

Because like everything else eBay, it’s all about sacrificing substance in favor of appearance. A facade of eCommerce, soon to be “sanitized for your protection” but nevertheless, still the dirtiest.

There's a ''history'' here and it goes back to the early days of eBay + PayPal. First: I don't work for eBay and can only guess at their actions. Before retirement, I worked in the Adult industry (retail to consumer) for 20+ years and know that business like the proverbial back of my hand....

Back in the days when eBay first bought PayPal from Elon Musk et. al, there was a vast difference in the boards of the two companies. eBay was the more liberal on selling adult products and PayPal was the more conservative. Because the PayPal folks *really* didn't want to get in bed (as it were) with the Adult industry, they worked to keep eBay from accepting PayPal for anything in the Adults Only category, which is why (to this day) a customer can still mail in a check or money order (etc.) for products purchased **in that category only.**

Of course that didn't last and PayPal was the ''standard'' payment everywhere across the service. I'm not sure why the ''cash'' payments lasted for the category. Habit, maybe?

As time passed as the larger industry went more toward digital, Visa/MC/Amex (etc.) wanted to get out of processing those sales as there *is* quite a bit of fraud. They've been mostly successful at staying away: much of the processing has gone off-shore, and there are a few major cc processors in place who stepped around the Visa/MC wall by setting up their own system.

From years of reading about this change in the Adult industry news since ~2000, I'd say that the core of eBay Managed Payments (EMP) has the same difficulty: their credit card processors don't want to be in ''that business'' because of said fraud (which wouldn't exist in hard product any more than selling sneakers or cell phones), plus any legal issues with selling the material in question. I'm guessing they allowed it as part of the EMP initial set up, and then gave eBay X number of days to get OUT of that business. A second guess would be that the payment processors set the processing fees for the Adult Only category extremely high so as not to be cost-effective to eBay, short of jacking up the Final Value Fees to sellers to the point as to be cost-prohibitive to them.

I'm interested in knowing why eBay even bothered to open the Adult Only category to EMP for only a couple of months before closing the category. That was a bad move in seller relations.

If I were King of the Universe, I suppose I'd try to figure out another way of accepting payments there, even promoting the old school way of accepting checks just like the 1990s! Possibly set up a separate payment processor (the Adult companies mentioned above) for that category only, or, print out the number of dollars passing through that category daily, and put the thumbscrews to their current VISA/MC processor.

eBay has never been kind to the Adult category. It's almost a dare to the customer to try to find something there because those items are not included in the ''regular'' index and I - after all these years - don't know how to find something there in a search. Given the lack of promotional support, even behind the ''curtain'' of the Mature Audiences click-through page, It just seems like another sad loss for eBay. And the worst yet there for Adult products.

I was easily able to find the adultstuffonly website through Google.  I don't think much of their design work (!) but the site looks like an absolute winner and I can't wait till it's up and running.
