eBay Kills PowerSeller Program: 'A Sad Day Indeed'

By: Ina Steiner

It came without warning in the middle of the night - a notice of the death of the eBay PowerSeller program. Memorial tributes quickly began pouring out from longtime sellers.

"Just received this message from eBay that they are retiring the PowerSeller program, see below. I have been an eBay seller since: Oct-27-01, and a PowerSeller for most of that time. This is a sad day indeed."

The eBay email subject line read: "(User name), we're retiring the PowerSeller program."

The subheading read: "Thank you for being a PowerSeller-learn what's next," followed by the eBay logo and a header reading: "We're retiring the PowerSeller program."

The email came from not one manager or executive, but from "Your eBay Team," and here's how it broke the news:

Dear (User name),
As a PowerSeller, you're one of eBay's most trusted and valued sellers.

While the PowerSeller program is part of eBay's heritage and has provided a meaningful badge for sellers, it now exists alongside eBay's Top Rated Seller program.

Because the Top Rated Seller program offers more meaningful seller recognition as well as a wider set of benefits, we have made the decision to simplify our seller programs and retire the PowerSeller program and badge as of June 20, 2021. It's been inspiring to see how PowerSellers have shaped eBay since the launch of the program more than 20 years ago and we now encourage you to continue your eBay journey as a part of the Top Rated Seller program. Learn more about what it means to be a Top Rated Seller.

So that you don't lose the benefits of being a PowerSeller, starting June 20, your 7 calendar day grace period for negative and neutral feedback will now be included in the Top Rated Seller program.

In recognition of your contribution as a PowerSeller, we have created a special certificate which you can personalize and download here.

Thank you for being one of eBay's most active and long-standing sellers, and for contributing to our heritage. We look forward to supporting you as you continue to represent the best of selling on eBay through the Top Rated Seller program.

Your eBay Team

Those sellers who took the trouble to follow the link in the email to get their PowerSeller certificate said they were unable to print it. Others wondered if eBay would be closing the PowerSeller board.

One seller, "my-cottage-books-and-antiques," summed up their reaction in a post on the eBay boards as follows:

"Power Seller status hasn't really been meaningful for many years. But my guess is, eBay hesitated to close it down sooner because they figured it would rile up a lot of people.....but its been so many years now, that I think very few people are really going to be upset about this. Maybe a little sad, for those who have been on eBay since the early days, but I doubt a lot of people will be saying that they are going to leave eBay because of this change....at this point, it's just a bit of Marie Kondo like cleaning out....kind of like the way some of the Community Boards will soon be closed down...."

The PowerSeller program had its genesis in 1997 when eBay hired Karen Stahl, according to Adam Cohen in his book about eBay called "The Perfect Store."

By 2002, eBay had Bronze, Silver, and Gold levels and added two levels, Platinum and Titanium. In 2008, eBay added a new tier called the "Diamond" Powerseller for those who sold $500,000 a month. But the eventual demise of the PowerSeller program seemed inevitable once eBay launched the Top Rated Seller program in 2009.

Leave your tributes here - what did it mean to you to be a PowerSeller?

eBay actually calling any seller "Powerseller" when everything that they do appears to reveal how loathsome they view their sellers and how  untrusting they are of their sellers.

Just remember, actions speak far more than a tiny meaningless badge.  Sellers need an Aretha "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" moment.    "Don't bite the hand that feeds you" is lost on eBay senior leaders.

we were given the link to "create" our own certificate. And the link was broken, completely a dead end. PATHETIC.
I am not a TRS as I only promise 2 days handling but I mail same day or 1 day 99.9% of the time. But I worry about the constant eBay glitches like when they counted Monday National Holidays as a business day for 2 years before someone finally fixed it. Or major snowstorms where eBay does not amend the shipping delays.
I am now at the point where I hate eBay as much as I hate Comcast, a level I thought no corporation could every reach!

@railady

PS has nothing to do with MP.  And you don't have to "respond" to the email they sent notifying us of the retirement of the PS program.

PS hasn't had a badge for a few years now, so you would not have seen a badge on your listings telling anyone this.  It was something that was ONLY known by the seller and Ebay.  There were no public badges or statements that told anyone other than the seller they were in the program.

Nothing lasts forever which includes me and my business.

Change is the name of the game and those who embrace it tend to prosper and those who don't tend to fade away.

Remember when PowerSellers got a 20% fee discount WITHOUT offering free shipping?
Then they cut it to 10%.
Then that went away in lieu of TRS 10%, contingent on offering free shipping.
Well...there ain't no free lunch...or free shipping.
Free shipping has no upside in a competitive market for used items.
You either add the shipping to total cost (in my case $10 shipping per item avg) and become non-competitive, or eat the shipping and take it in the shorts.
...and ol' ebay collects 12.35% no matter what I decide.
I decide to tack on shipping.
Amazingly, I do quite well charging $9-$12 shipping.

6 month's after I started selling, I became TRS. Some of my buyers ;like to see that little flag but more impotently they read the feedback regularly and email me about it. i I thought I might have a bit of reticence about moving on but all I feel is a great sense of relief

My sellers seem to be able to find me,

These soulless wonder's  are who leaves the real stink on you.

FOM fortune magazine " better understand why so many people mistrust business, read David Streatfield’s masterly explication in The New York Times of the federal case against several eBay employees for viciously, if incompetently, harassing and intimidating two benign critics.

The story is lurid and pathetic. The then-CEO of eBay, Devin Wenig, didn’t like the reports in a husband-and-wife newsletter aimed at people who sell wares on eBay. Wenig sent texts documenting his ire to his head of communications ("Take her down"), who egged on the company’s head of security ( want to see ashes"), a drunk-on-power operative charged with cooking up sophomoric stunts to frighten the couple ("I've been ordered to find and destroy"

There we have it. LURID, PATHETIC, SO[HOMORIC STUNTS. DRUNK ON POWER.  Do you have any regrets for  your support of them Marie? Personally I'd make sure there was no, non ZERO, affiliation to them no matter what they offered. Everybody has the choice to dance with the devil. I choose NOT.

20% went to 10, then had to do free shipping, and then free returns.....

I just said enough is enough. I will do things the way I want. If I sell on ebay and do well ok, if not thats ok too. I said to myself I am not going to think about any business I loose not doing this or that. It started with ending intl. shipping. No free returns, no free shipping. If I loose I loose. Ebay is not as profitable as it once was. It is still good, but there are other opportunities out there that are just as rewarding. And if all else fails....Amazon FBA, and bye ebay! It would be an adjustment, and would have to do slightly more volume to make the same $$, but I think just doing FBA would make up for that. Buyers like Amazon FBA.
