eBay Gets Warm and Fuzzy in New Seller Survey

By: Ina Steiner

eBay routinely surveys sellers asking them to rate the company on how well it serves their needs. But a new survey is different, with questions asking sellers on whether they think eBay shares their values and if eBay cares about them:

Thinking about eBay, to what degree are each of these true for you?
(Scale: Extremely; Very; Somewhat; Not too much; Not at all)

- I feel like eBay and I share the similar values
- I feel connected to eBay
- eBay is a brand that "gets me" or understands me
- eBay is a brand for someone like me
- eBay is a brand that I can depend on "no matter what"
- I feel impacted by eBay's successes or failures
- I'm confident that eBay would make things right if something went wrong
- With eBay, I have confidence that the experience will consistently be what I expect.
- eBay is a brand that cares about me
- I believe that eBay's intentions are good
- eBay has my best interests at heart

Basically eBay is asking about its brand perception among sellers. If it finds problem areas, will eBay set out to repair them? Will it launch a marketing campaign to improve its brand? If the findings are positive, will it herald those findings in a brand campaign?

The survey also asks sellers to rate eBay's performance on the nitty gritty of selling, such as the following question:

Thinking about your most recent selling experience on eBay, how do you rate eBay's performance for each of the following?
(Scale: 1 - 5, with 1 being Poor and 5 being Excellent)

- Seller feedback mechanism
- Ease of creating a listing
- Ease of finding right category to list under
- Ease of paying my selling fees
- Ease of receiving and managing payments
- Policies to protect from fraud
- Guidance to choose right shipping option
- Promoting listings
- Managing returns
- Ease of updating tracking information
- Value added services available to enhance offerings
- Pricing guidance
- Standard for seller evaluation

The purpose of the survey matters. For example, when eBay asks sellers to rate its performance on the "Seller feedback mechanism," is it asking because it wants to take remedial action if sellers rate the feedback mechanism poorly? Or is it just benchmarking seller attitudes?

It's easy for eBay to learn where the challenges are for sellers without having to conduct a survey by mining the following to see what sellers are saying:

- Customer Service chats;

- eBay discussion boards posts;

- Social media posts;

- eBay weekly chat board posts.

It's always interesting to review eBay surveys to see which companies it feels are its competitors. When it asked, "Which of the following online marketplaces other than eBay have you used to sell products online," it provided the following possible options from which sellers could choose:

- Amazon
- Etsy
- Craigslist
- Facebook Marketplace
- Newegg
- Walmart/Jet.com
- Overstock.com
- Your own company website
- Other (please specify)

It's also interesting to see how eBay classifies sellers. In the current survey, it asks sellers to describe the type of seller they are, offering the following options:

- Merchant (purchases stock from manufacturers or distributors, has multiple of the same item for sale)
- Reseller (sources from various stores, websites, inventory is mainly one of a kind and not all are multiple quantity)
- Other (please specify)

The survey contained additional questions, including the following:

Thinking about your last 30 days selling on eBay, how satisfied are you with your overall eBay selling experience?

How likely are you to sell on eBay in the next 3 months?

Did you have issues or problems when selling in the past one month?

In what areas, if any, would you like to see eBay make improvements?

The survey also asked respondents to indicate their gender, age range, and how many people work as part of their online selling business.

Do you think the survey provides clues as to what changes may lie ahead or areas in which eBay may focus its attention?

I think the entire survey is being used just to find out one thing; what type of seller are you? They are looking for sellers doing retail arbitrage...

I've literally been getting this exact survey for more than a year.  (I can't say how long beyond that-the first one is lost somewhere beyond my saved messages.)

Maybe it's something tied to managed payments accounts?  I noticed they show up most frequently within 48 hours of me calling Merchant Support over eBay's latest screwup.

I agree with @Ric in that these questions are likely worded to generate some useful response for executives or investors.

I mean come ON.  eBay "gets me"?!

Obviously not.

Of course, if the survey results are collated using the same code they use to run the rest of the site, it's possible they're only seeing some of the results some of the time, or that the information comes out in such a garbled, recursive CSV that it's near impossible to get anything meaningful from it even if you try.

From what I can see, this survey isn't new, it looks like a carbon copy of one I got over a year or two ago. It seems like they use it to gauge how much more than can get away with to extract money form the sellers and buyers.

In other words, if you're still happy, eBay is greenlighted to take a bit more from the users.

I would say that Ebay could do a lot better than they are. The have done things to loose biz to Amazon. But I still sell on there, and I wouldnt say I hate ebay. Where else could I go and get this much biz this easily?

But, I dont do the survey's. Survey's are made for 1 reason. To benefit ebay!

BINGO! Or, if they dont like your answers you go onto the "s**t seller list". (oh, they would never do that!,.....Just like they would never harass, and creep Ina, and Stan?)

Removing all my  listings was one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. I didn't realize how many people actually had my real email address. or my link to Etsy. Looks' like I'm going to be busy for a while. Managed Payments won't though.๐Ÿ˜น๐Ÿ˜น๐Ÿ˜น๐Ÿ˜น๐Ÿ˜น

@ CanBrit

Congratulations!
There was nothing more liberating than leaving ebay so I could do business on my own terms, handle my own monies, shipping, and customer issues.

Corporate monsters are incredibly dependent on consumers (including sellers).
They hide this notion because they are insecure, lazy, stupid, and overall incompetent.
They know that they couldn't hit water from a boat.
And as all bullies, they are making up for major shortcomings, in this case, many of them.

@postbuster THANK YOU!!

So I did a few little experiments. I have a duple of old accounts That  are still connected to PAYPAL.Oh joy oh Bliss. So I figured I'd list just a couple of things to see how it works for sellers these days. Both listings defaulted to a checked BUY IT NOW Box. Three times I went over the listings to make sure nothing extra was checked, but low and behold both were. After I pressed List It.

what a bunch of idiot good for nothing manipulative losers. This just proves the absolute lack of intelligence they all possess. Do they really think that if I get a best offer, that I didn't request and it's 90% less than the asking price I'll accept it?????

@ CanBrit

The corporate mindset is turning into a culture of people who are increasingly trying to exploit people into a fantasy world where buyers can become more abusing and churn out money for them.

They will hire as many people as it takes to further the distance between us and them.

Lately their practices have become more illegal and underhanded the more desperate they become because their stocks keep falling.
They really do live in fear of the world because they're cowards who will cheat anyone they can.

As long as they stay away from the reach of the law, they end up becoming executives for other major companies.  (Wymer is one of the worst cowards!!)

It really is treason to the country from the executive branch.
False perception of value and actual revenue, so they steal money to make their statements seem large to investors.  AND they didn't pay taxes??

Maddoff wannabe's.
They are the ones responsible for running everyone into poverty.

Pay Close attention to the DHL shipping small claims suit.  heir crooked scamming behavior is the same as eBay's global and International shipping. Scam Unfortunately,, a lot of people aren't aware because you have to receive international orders to know.

I wonderful how maybe sellers have noticed a drop in their international orders since this BS started. Some sellers have smartened up and figured how to bypass that utter crookery and be REAL sellers to their customers. Send your business card with an order. EVERY SINGLE TIME! Send extra's so they can hand them out. There is no better referral than a happy customer.

It's non wonder they are cracking down on information sharing.

Ebay has turned SCAMDEMIC, BIG TECH, CALIFORNIA LIBERAL! I HATE eBay so bad, I relish in the idea of their company collapsing. But alas, they've been paid by SOROS. To create total chaos in the US/World's biggest selling platform. This company and ALL their upper crest, can die.
