eBay Holds Seller Funds in Another Apparent Payout Glitch

By: Ina Steiner

eBay is holding seller funds today in what appears to be another payout glitch. "Quite a few people are posting that eBay managed payments payout is being declined this morning. I myself am included, and it is a higher payout than usual," an EcommerceBytes reader reported on Ecommerce EKG.

One seller glommed on to a thread from December 2nd when eBay had experienced a similar payout glitch. "I am seeing one of these today where it says payout failed and eBay will retry," the seller wrote this morning. "Nothing has changed with my bank account. Is there anything I need to do or should I just wait for eBay to retry?"

Sellers are also reporting missing payouts today on industry discussion boards.

In the December 2nd incident, eBay initially failed to disburse sellers' funds but blamed the problem on banks.

As a result, many sellers spent a lot of time contacting their banks to try to resolve the problem until eBay published a post later that day acknowledging the problem was on its end.

Update 1/12/2021: An eBay moderator acknowledged the problem in the "Payments" section of its discussion boards and updated the thread at 1:23 to state: "Our payments processor has confirmed all impacted payouts have been processed successfully. Members should see their payouts processed as expected without delay. Please remember depending on bank policy it may be 1-4 business days before the bank will process these funds."

The problem is the banks, the problem is the sellers, the problem is Paypal ..... funny how its never "the problem is eBay" when we all know IT IS.

Can we PLEASE get like a week where everything on eBay actually works like we are in 2021 and they take ecommerce SERIOUSLY ?

We all knew this would happen when we were forced into Mangled Payments.

I received a message from eBay stating that my bank ''declined '' their transfer into my bank account.
Called the bank to make sure the problem was not on my end.
Bank said nothing is wrong on their end & it is eBay that has the problem.

As long as we are on the subject....you can change the eBay money distributions into your bank account on a daily basis but....even if you do that....they never transfer the money daily....they send it when they feel like doing it.

Now we all know how scary Managed Payments are... as eBay can even take money out of your bank account without your knowledge & then claim it was a ''mistake''.

eBay is now in control of everyone's money {& bank account } & they now do whatever they want with YOUR money.

@DZT

Now we all know how scary Managed Payments are... as eBay can even take money out of your bank account without your knowledge & then claim it was a ''mistake''.

eBay is now in control of everyone's money {& bank account } & they now do whatever they want with YOUR money.

Which is why IF I were to ever actually be in Mangled Payments that account would be a separate account from all of my other banking.  I would make sure that i transferred every last penny out of it each and every day just so they could NOT manage to get any of my personal money with one of their all to normal glitches.  Etsy did that a couple of years ago to their sellers and caused them nothing but grief trying to ever get the money back where it came from as I heard some were only given credit on their account for future invoices.  Not sure if that is in fact what happened as I was going from what others said (did not happen to me as i never sold on that site and never will as long as Silverman is the CEO as he is another former Ebay employee who learned how to steal from the sellers before moving there), but I would not put it past them as Ebay does some of the same sometimes and then make it as difficult as they can for you to get the money back rather than use more of their services.

Being in total control of everyones business was exactly what Wenig wanted from the moment he became the CEO as he felt he knew more about how to run our businesses than we did.  Of course this is the CEO that led Ebay to a huge loss in 2017 (if I remember the year correctly) and continued to lose marketshare every year to his competition while reaching deeper and deeper into sellers pockets every chance he could as he felt that Ebay should make more money on every sale than the seller who sourced the inventory, paid for the inventory, managed to figure out how to get it shown on Ebay even when they preferred to hide anything that was not from China and packaged and shipped the item to the buyer, while all Ebay managed to do was find more ways to hide the Sellers listings, show their competitions items on the page that we paid for with our insertion fees and manage to screw over so many people that the BOD had to have him fly in the Ebay jet everywhere he went due to the level of security necessary for his safety.  I am not sure if there was ever a CEO who was hated more by his customers than Wenig who couldn't even manage to avoid running the business his dad left him into the ground.  The problems Mangled Payments is still having now are due to his leadership or should i say lack of leadership and doing everything on the cheap, except when it came to having Walkers West built.  If not for that outside contractor who posted on one of her accounts about how nice it was and managed to post a couple of pictures of it, nobody other than the privileged few would even know that it existed.  What a legacy to have the world remember you by and the massive Golden Parachute Overpayment which he received.

I never thought that Ebay could be put out of business, but if Wenig had stayed there I actually believe he would have managed to do it.  Who knows, since his finger is still in the middle of all the problems with Mangled Payments, maybe he still will manage to do it.

eBay executives see the high volume of payouts they have decided to withhold and know that the longer they delay that volume of payout, the more they will earn on the float.

Wonder why eBay partnered with an overseas bank for mangled payments?  It is so that they can use the process for their own advantage and to sellers disadvantage while hoping to be out of reach of Federal Regulations and investigations.

This is all part of the eBay management scheme to retain and use seller funds for their own advantage.  They could care less about the negative ramifications for sellers as they trot out the tried and true excuse that there is a  ' glitch ' .

''eBay is now in control of everyone's money {& bank account } & they now do whatever they want with YOUR money.''

Only if you let them by signing up for managed payments and providing a bank account number.

Likely aware of eBay's long history of user policy shenanigans, presumably, after accessing all of the potential risks, a rather small group of sellers chose to voluntarily sign up for managed payments.

Apparently, regardless of the potential peril, the only consideration for many was the continution of their eBay sales.

Not sure why these early adopters now feel like they are entitled to complain about the very issues that they were forewarned about.

Selling on eBay and complying with the venue's high-handed demands are choices that each seller makes.

Despite what many individuals think, freedom of choice results in both positive and negative outcomes.

With my hand in the air I say:

Our payment today was marked "declined"

Now MP says it's "complete" but there's no money in our account.

MP is nothing like Paypal which worked in seconds, not days!

There are no "glitches", any more then there are aliens in area 52, yetis, bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster or a sane explanation for the Kennedy 1 bullet theory.

eBays Managed Payment System was the final salvo in the war - the final push in the war against its sellers.

And they won.

They dont care if you leave, they dont care if I leave, they dont care if 10 thousand sellers leave - they just dont care.

They dont care because for every sold listing - they are %100 in control and can do as they please.

With ZERO justification - they can take your money, your item, your money AND your item, and even assess you a fee "just because" - and short of leaving eBay - theres nothing anyone can do about it, period.

And, thats they exact way eBay wants it to be - because its some lame parody of what Amazon does.

SIK's explanation was brilliant in its scope - but (and I hope I have his permission) I'll take it a step farther.

When Pierre put eBay together - it was just supposed to be (in his mind) a super duper fancy classifieds section aka Craigs List plus - with eBay earning its FVF on the sale cost of the item in return for doing the SEO and hosting a site. After all, how many people knew what SEO and site hosting was back in 1995 ?

As eBay grew, the board members and the CEOs realized that eBay could be more then some large but dinky site - it could "print money" because the internet let people reach out to sell goods to others FAR AWAY from their local areas.

Right up until Megs time (and for the record - I never had an issue with her) UNTIL the FVF started being applied to shipping.

THAT was when the theft started - it should have been nipped int eh bud THEN, but too many people were making too much money (eBand larger sellers) to even be bothered with it.

Then came JD.

JD is the "carny type" of CEO - always looking for an angle - not being straight with anyone.

Being a carny (no disrespect to REAL carny folk - they are awesome people) type person, JD realized that there was untold potential ie money being left on the table table that could belong to eBay.

So, he set eBay on fire with VERO.

There is nothing honest or forthright about VERO. They werent created to tell the truth (as we know - eBay isnt about the truth) about listings, they arent there to be policemen/policewomen, they arent there to uphold any laws - they are there to remove listings and squeeze people as directed.

JD realized that eBay would NEVER become Amazon - its just not possible. So if you cant grow in size - do the next best thing - squeeze your sellers till their money runs out and they leave.

JD is a hustler - hiring fellow con artist Griff to head "seller protection" when there isnt any - to lure sellers in and give them a false sense of security. "Go ahead and sell your items - we have your back" ... right.

So JD turned to VERO to extract money from manufacturers via the now defunct verowatch.com. Ask Skullcandy and Casio about it - I know I did. Once they joined the "club", all they needed to do is pay the entrance fee then direct eBay to pull listings at will - and they did. This went on for some time until too many people got wind and it shut down.

eBay after that realized the "power of the TOS". Not liek Huey Lewis said "The power of love", but the power of the "Shrink wrap license". Want to know why he like Wenig got golden parachutes? Easy, cause each one furthered the cause of eBays greediness in his own way.

"You can get anything you want at Alice's Restaurant", and you can do anything you want to a seller as long as its in the TOS. Since eBay has social media and many pages on its site - all it has to do is publish SOMETHING SOMEWHERE and thats enough notice for the law. Its like (for those who still ready newspapers) theres a section of legal notices. Those notices are enough (legally) to make declarations - mostly its of corporations opening and closing - but its the same point as here).

eBay says they can do X, and its now in the TOS -and your signing on is tacit agreement that you are "all good with it" and that your agreement means you wont sue etc.

eBay got Cassini classified as a piece of shrinkwrapped software and used the Autodesk case as president.

As for Wenig, he was the engineer of taking the war against eBay sellers and putting it in public. Full speed ahead, damn the torpedoes and lets start taking things (control among other things) away from sellers. Remember when top rated sellers got %10 back?

Under Wenig - there was no more "no returns", no more 14 day or 21 day returns. Sure you could say it - but NO Returns means nothing. eBay created its money back guarantee using SELLERS funds - in what world is that a guarantee? And wheres Griff (aka King of all seller protection) ??? NO WHERE - off eating wings at Walkers if I had to guess.

These kinds of things are why Wenig got the money when he retired - he was willing to do the dirty work - he was the guy that stretched the rubber band as far as it would go - with MP being the last straw.

MP does what no other program can - it gives eBay %101 of your business.

eBay cant grow its marketplace - it was designed circa 1995 and cant accommodate/is not set up for REAL growth.

MP gives eBay revenue streams that it never dreamed of. eBay dumped Paypal (who was too mice to sellers - they actually let them win cases) and now with Adyen (and theres zero oversight to what they do or dont do and you cant contact them should you need to) they get to keep the float, keep any extra points they dont feel like passing on (remember that wording about saving money ???? it was %100 BS) and pay you when THEY feel like it.

Its all a con game that the Wall Street people clap like trained seals for. "eBay is growing" so go buy some more over priced stock.

eBays free cash belongs to its wronged sellers and not Walkers when the scotch runs dry.

eBay is now free to do as it pleases when it pleases - they ahve enough large accounts (those refurb sellers for example) that it doesnt need smaller sellers like us - and therefore doesnt care what any of us do or dont do.

Its either sell on eBay and try and stay 1 step ahead of them and their thieving ways or go to Amazon (not much better control wise) OR any other platform that works for you.

Ridiculous that it has to be this way in 2021.

I just found eBay double dipping on a $160 refund.  Sold the item Dec 29, got paid.  Buyer elects to return it, resulting in eBay putting a HOLD of $160 on Jan 7.  I would have had $261 coming to me that day, but only got sent $101 after the debit for the hold.  That's taking it out once.

Got the item back, and completed the return.  Had $900+ coming to me today, but got debited for the same $160 again, only getting $750-ish.  Got paid once, gave it back twice.  Looks like they acted on it as if the hold didn't even exist - credited the FVF, but charged the proceeds.  Hey, what about the first $160 swiped out???

Now I have to chase that down, a long conversation I'm sure, if I can survive being on hold that long.  I also have to go back and check any other refunds to find out if they were doubled up.

Twenty years with PayPal, never a hold, never a mistake, 100% correct, easy-to-follow format, money instantly available.  With money clearing in different time periods after the sale, NOT in chronological order, it's hard to make sure each sale actually HITS a payout transfer.  So glad things have ''improved'' with eBay's shell game versus a blindfolded ''contestant''.

You have to match up items sold per period with individual entries on the corresponding payout, and verify that nothing got skipped.   And that refunds only got removed once, which is a paper chase with the hold function (or dysfunction).  Then confirm that the payouts were executed correctly to the bank account.  A real chore each week, or each day if you are high volume.  Too many moving parts.

Watch EVERY TRANSACTION, folks!

Thats why Ebay wanted everybody in Mangled Payments because there are a lot of people selling on here that will have no idea when they do or don't get what they are entitled to.  Ebay is counting on that to once again show growth because they cannot true growth as there is none.  I can't wait until Ebay gets some type of banking or other governmental audit and finds out that there are a completely different set of rules that they know nothing about out there and the fines are extremely hefty when they catch up to them.  I would not be surprised to see something happen soon as I am sure that many Sellers are contacting their government representatives about what is happening and are either getting directed to the correct agencies or the representatives are contacting those agencies to find out just how many policies and rules that Ebay has been and will continue to break until being told they cannot do what they are doing.  It already happened to them when they owned Paypal and were told that all the money that they were holding had to be kept in a non interest bearing account so they did not profit on it.  I am sure they are going to try and claim something along the lines of that was different but hopefully these officials are not elected so Ebay cannot once again buy their way out of trouble.

eBay once again doubles down on a bad idea.

I can't think of anything that's more likely to drive away or at least cause sellers to do a lot less business on the site than this dumb ill-conceived program.

Twice in two months running, is very damaging, if it happens again...listing volumes will decline if they haven't already. Trust is very hard to earn back once it's been violated.

@Lightning

I think I might have something similar happening with one of my returns.

Received a return request on Sat. Item is defective. Fine, I know the issue and told the buyer to toss the mirror. I issued an immediate refund.

It is still appearing as a hold/pending return. Now I have processed a refund and received a confirmation from eBay. Why is it appearing at all? My guess is, the same slow speed with which we receive payouts go the other way as well. Buyers don't get their refunds as quickly either.

How long before buyers catch on and only want to deal through Paypal? Is this happening already? I know that I am losing sales due to Managed Payments for a myriad of reasons. Yes, buyers can pay with Paypal, But I don't think it is the same.

Managed Payments stinks through and through.

Well, I have to eat some crow here.  The held funds showed up today, without my having to chase it down.  EBay got it right, albeit a bit on the slow side.  I forgot that they are quick to take, slow to give back.  Still, shoddy accounting.  I'll have to find a way to beat them up as payback.

I have sold on e-bay for 17 years with near perfect record.. E-bay only cares about their profits. If I'm wrong then I must be wrong about the following. You list something on e-bay and do all the work selling shipping returns and on and on all the work. The final value fee for higher end items is already ridiculous yet they charge you another fee on the cost of shipping to your customers. They also demand you have free shipping  threatening your listings with lower exposure if you don't do it.

They give buyers money back for fraudulent returns without your permission taken by force out of your account because you use managed payments. They also charge you even more money to use this Managed payments by forcing their way into your banking relationship. Is there bounced fees to the Bank because of E-bay?

Good luck  if you get what your supposed to in that managed account on time or ever? Better do the math every sale and watch out. They take your ability to leave negative feedback away yet allow customers to use it to abuse you and do nothing. So now they are saying they need more money to exposure your items for sale or they will hide them??

Wow sounds like we would get better treatment dealing with the MOB.  I'm leaving and from what I've heard when the pandemic is over sellers will start flight by the thousands.

I just received this: “
eBay
You missed the deadline to update your account details, but don’t worry-we’re giving you more time. Update your account details by January 20, 2021, or your ability to revise or relist existing listings, or create new listings will be disabled. Don’t wait!”

DON’T WAIT,? ...😂

I was an early seller on eBay.... watched my volumes drop from heavy 5 figures.... to 3 figures last year.....while amazon grew to mid 6 figures....same items...same prices ...NOT FBA.

No way on earth am I going with managed payments ....things like this, search nonsense algorithms, etc are why on the 20th, the few items I bother listing there are gone..... EBay is a failing platform as far as I can see.... don’t even buy there anymore. Dinosaur comes to mind.

We have been on MP since mid September.  Due to comments such as those above, we opted for daily payouts.  We monitored the transactions very closely, and all was good.  No issues on payments, FVF, promotion costs, or refunds.  So we changed to weekly payments to cut down on the number of transaction on our business bank statement.   Again, no issues whatsoever.  Every charge accurate and all deposits accurate and on time.  We have been on eBay for many years and all is running smoothly.  The only major gripe we have had is the FVF charge on shipping (we charge shipping on every listing).  We were also miffed at that ridiculous $.30 per item charge, a ripoff if I've ever seen one.  As like most businesses, when our cost of doing business goes up, we pass it along to the customer by raising our item prices and shipping charges.

@Westport Will
There is no $.30 fee per ITEM on MP.  It's per order, per transaction.

And that $.30 will NEVER go away, as it what the credit card company is charging, presuming the buyer used a credit card, and passed through by eBay.  EBay charges it on every transaction, just like PayPal does, even if there is no card involved, just because they can.  Expect it to go up soon - it's been $.30 far too long for them NOT to tap it for more money.
