eBay Considers Radical Changes to Seller Stores

By: Ina Steiner

eBay is surveying sellers about its eBay Stores offering, and some of the changes under consideration are radically different than its current offerings. In addition, the new approach may put pressure on third-party inventory-management services.

Currently, eBay offers five packages ranging from a Starter eBay Store ($4.95/month for an annual subscription) to an Enterprise eBay Store ($2.999.95/month).

One change would be moving toward a build-your-own-store package, as we described in today's Newsflash article.

The survey also presented 30 different Store packages with each showing different features and costs.

The survey itself, and some of the features described, were complicated.

Given the challenges sellers already face in analyzing their eBay invoices, it is hard to imagine how they could determine if eBay calculated their fees correctly for any given month given some of the convoluted discount structures being considered.

For example, some of the discounts described are based on quarterly performance targets.

Some Discounts under Consideration

- 1,000 free listings if monthly sales volume on eBay exceeds $10K. Additional fixed price listings 10 cents each.

- Growth based discounts: 5% discount on eBay final value fees if quarterly eBay sales volume increases 20%.

- 20% discount up to $50 on self-service, cost-per-click ads for individual listings appearing in search results page and on View Item or Product pages.

- 20% discount on eBay final value fees.

- 20% discounts on eBay fees for listings placed on other eBay sites i.e. eBay Germany.

Some Benefits under Consideration
eBay also presented some benefits that are not currently available.

 - Free returns insurance (worth $50 per month)

- Inventory insurance (worth $50 per month)

- Bronze data package: Buyer segmentation insights that help you understand your buyers Behaviors.

- Silver data package: Sourcing insights/opportunities that help you understand what type of inventory is in demand on eBay and likely to sell quickly.

- Gold data package: Marketplace data APIs (eg: real time reporting on your traffic & performance, price competitiveness data, marketplace benchmarks, sourcing insights & opportunities data).

- Access to dedicated team of customer service agents.

- 1-to-1 personal account management: eBay head office lead, 10 hours per month.

Additional Exposure under Consideration
Some of the new plans under consideration describe added exposure, such as the following:

- Listings eligible for Daily Deals participation

- Ability to run Seller promotions (SME)

- Ability to display your eBay listing on other sites i.e. Google search/Yahoo etc. & pay a reduced fee for buyer traffic driven by these sites.

- Seller participation in eBay coupon deals events/ campaigns (you will be co-funding these)

- Live video streaming on store front, news letter targeting to buyer segments.

- Influencer driven traffic for your storefront.

Ramifications for Third-Party Inventory Management Services
Under some scenarios, eBay described the following options:

- eBay will offer cross marketplace inventory management, bringing efficiency in business management, eliminating the need for a third party provider.

- You can onboard inventory to eBay using inventory files from other marketplaces.

That indicates eBay is considering offering more inventory-management services than it currently provides, with the potential to impact third-party services.

Let us know what eBay Store features you'd like to see and how much you'd be willing to pay for them.

The growth related discounts are the biggest slap in the face.  eBay does everything they can to stifle sales.  And then they trot this carrot out?  Mangled Payments has to be the end for them.  Give theme free access to a bank account for the occasional crumb?  You would have to be mad or awfully desperate.

Ebay is a great place to get started. I say again started.

As @RKTOYS says "stifle sales". They dont stifle sales, they distribute sales amongst sellers. They allow you to do well when you start, and sites like Amazon you dont when you start. In that way ebay is good, but on the other side, you are only going so far on ebay.

When you become an established seller you have to have more and more items for sale. The more and more items you have the less and less you sell (but of course your $ sales go up). When you first start about 95% of your items will sell at least one a month. But as you grow that drops, and drops. They want the store fee's so of course thats the way it works.

I have items for sale that are less than competitors...far less and I dont get sales on them. It's a rigged card game. And thats why you are only going so far on ebay.

Ebay knows this, and that is why anything they do, any changes they make are there to make them money, or give the illusion that they are all in for you. Bottom line ebay makes money for ebay, and if it happens to make you money also..good. But that doesnt always happen.

I Beta-tested the New & Disproved (To Work) Mangled & Fan-dangled Shipping interface.
Thought it was crap & told them it was crap repeatedly.
WHY MESS WITH SOMETHING THAT WORKED????!!!.
It [New & Disproved (To Work) Mangled & Fan-dangled Shipping interface.] never worked for my seller account (None of them actually) but I always had the URL Change-out to get to the Classic Shipping Label Site.
I also cannot use the Bulk Shipping interface.

Red-Letter Error mess-ages all the time every single time.
Called each week & reported it & even had someone remote into my desk-top to see it & sent them screen captures, had the matter escalated over & over & over & over & over & over & over & over & over & over & over & over & over & over & over & over & over again & again & again....
That was 3 Years ago.
Last time I stopped calling them was when the October 20th EF3 Tornado in Dallas (Yeah we had 10 Tornado's that single day) destroyed my eBay business warehouse on 1 side of Dallas & then trekked eastward about 18 miles before swerving at literally the last few miles to take out my Condo & Rental Units.
Oh, also got my 401K Classic BMW Car collection.
Finally got the business up & running in June of this year & do you think it's been fixed??
HELL to the HELL NO....my gawd....a tech company that cannot even fix their own Stupid Shipping interface.
I'm back to calling it in (Have been since June 1st.) every Friday & still getting the promise of the issue going to be escalated & resolved.
How feckless...the ghosting of Wenig the Cynic-maker lives on long after the stupidity is gone.

More changes, like none of us expected that.

eBay has so many changes you would think it's a living breathing entity.

Who's in favor of NO changes for just 1 year, just 1. . . . . .

KISS...if that concept were employed at ebay, they'd have 50% less employees and 100% happier sellers.
If I run by Kroger, and I'm FOCUSED on bread and milk and getting HOME, I don't care about the all bells and whistles.
Does anybody at eBay actually SHOP...with a PURPOSE?

There is no way I would trust eBay to manage my inventory. Does anyone remember the times that a massive number of eBay listings were "disappeared"? Or the photo glitches? If not for my third party provider I use to manage my inventory, listings and photos, I would have had a lot more work to do to repair the damage.

NO way would I trust eBay to import or export listings to/from other selling sites.

As others have said, they need to resolve the near constant tech glitches that already exist prior to introducing additional "features".

My biggest issue selling on eBay is the amount of time it takes to create listings. Work on a solution for that instead of complicated a la carte nonsense.

It's just a survey.  They come and go.  It all sounds a bit complex to me and hard to manage.  I'll wait before I get too upset by all this and see if they start bringing any of it to the site next year.  For now my time is far better spent on preparing for the Holiday Season that is upon us now.

I did not see anything that appears to be an improvement, only the potential to cause more work and make selling more complicated.

And, eBay, get rid of the BIN button on fixed price listings.

Perhaps ebay should focus on fixing their broken site before complicating things even more. Just this morning, could not list new items due to ebay's latest "tech issue"  Ebay = Dead Man Walking

Only one thing worse than a change at eBay, that is a change at Amazon!  In my opinion, eBay is a well-oiled machine compared to the big A.  AMZ is so chock full of exceptions, glitches and roadblocks that they really make eBay look like they got it together.  I find eBay pretty consistant overall.  Compare that with one simple example of AMZ advertising where I assume a customer clicked on my advertised $60 listing, yet purchased $7 item (NOT advertised) and AMZ not only charged me for the click ($1.50), but added that $7 item to my Return on Clicks metric when the advertised item was NOT purchased.  So many issues over there, I could go on an on.  But eBay allows me to actually dare speak to my customers before a sale, set expectations and provide technical support after the sale.

No way would I even consider giving more money to Fleecebay. Just anothert way to take more hard-earned money away from Sellers & line Shareholders & other higher ups pockets, while screwing over Sellers.

Not all the options require paying more money to Ebay.  I just think it is very complicated and poorly structured.

Keep it simple.
1) Provide free unlimited listings
2) Increase charges for sales to help compensate the FREE listings
3) Present paid options that will help sellers increase sales

Ugh...another survey. These things are more or less a waste of time. As for eBay, they only give the impression that they care what sellers think.

The points presented seem way too complicated to me. Ebay should be simplifying things; not complicating them. The site is so glitch prone as it is. They really need to fix the exisitng problems first.

Finally, eBay does not need to reward growth. Reduce fees for 20% month to month increase? sounds great but it's like making a promise knowing they will rarely, if ever need to deliver. How many sellers see that kind of growth on a consistent basis?? Not many; probably none. Ebay will throw up the throttle level and the uptrend will reverse. That is baked into the platform. They could avoid this by eliminating the throttles, limits, guardrails and every other of a dozen methods by which they limit sellers. Without that, it is an empty and meaningless benefit.

It is so simple. Fix the platform, let sellers sell. Get out of the way and the numbers will go up. I am happy to pay a reasonable fee for services. Stop making things so complicated.

Curious. Who gets all these surveys that I'm always reading about? I've sold on eBay for almost a decade with probably close to $2 million in sales on eBay. No from eBay ever sends me a survey. Ina, how do you find out about them?

Whats the point of the survey?

Didnt they just hire that idiot from Walmart? Where is he? Is he sleeping like Griff?

It seems like all the hires go to sleep about a month after they settle into the new job. They let themselves be interviewed (read the softball interview with the new CEO over on seeking alpha) and then they turn in for the long cold winter.

The new idiot has no clue - the survey is a fishing expedition for clues on how to "improve the marketplace".

REALLY?

Most of these items have been done already, most could be done without the constant eBay interference and most would have been done - if eBay actually "was a venue".

But like any good Mafia, you back to the same well for more money regardless of how the "civilan" is doing - until they are burned out and go elsewhere (and they admit they watch and got ideas from the Sporanos).

BTW - where IS Sleeping Griff? - isnt it time someone woke him from his slumber?
