eBay Gives Sellers More Free Listings

By: Ina Steiner

Sponsored Link

eBay is giving sellers more free listings each month beginning August 1, 2020. The number of total free listings per month vary depending on a seller's Store subscription status and whether or not they are enrolled in eBay Managed Payments.

The change applies to insertion fees and does not impact Final Value commission fees.

A seller with no eBay Store subscription currently receives 50 free auction or fixed-price listings. As of August 1st, that seller would receive 200 free auction or fixed-price listings.

Basic Stores will get an additional 100 fixed-price listings; Starter Stores will receive an additional 150 listings, to 250 auction or fixed-price listings.

Sellers enrolled in Managed Payments receive a bigger boost in the number of zero insertion-fee listings. For example, a seller with a Basic Store using Managed Payments will receive 10,000 fixed-price listings in select categories; 350 fixed-price listings in all categories; and 250 auction listings in Fashion & Collectibles.

You can find the details on this page of the eBay website, where eBay also posted a Frequently Asked Questions section. Among the FAQs of which to take special note are the following:

Will I receive the additional monthly zero insertion fee listings in select categories for managed payments if I am not signed up for managed payments?
No. You will not receive the additional monthly zero insertion fee benefits starting August 1, 2020 unless you are signed up for managed payments. Non-Store sellers and Starter Store and Basic Store subscribers who are not in managed payments will still be eligible for monthly zero insertion fee listings starting August 1. Basic Store subscribers and above who are invited and signed up for managed payments will receive additional monthly zero insertion fee benefits in the select categories starting August 1. We are inviting more sellers to join managed payments every day.

Why aren't you changing the monthly zero insertion fee listings for auction listings in select categories?
Auction listing is a premium listing format and we are not changing monthly zero insertion fee auction listings. Use the auction listing format when you don't know the true value of your item and want the market to determine it. Use the fixed price listing format when you're confident about an item's value or require a certain price. We'll continue to evaluate and make adjustments as we identify new opportunities to improve the benefit.

The full announcement is found on this page of the eBay Announcement board.

Sellers discussing the news on the eBay boards were generally pleased except for those impacted by some of the category restrictions. Let us know what you think and how you'll be impacted, and how you think this impacts eBay.

Wreaks of DESPERATION when eBay has to bribe sellers with free listings and bonus free listings for being enrolled in Mangled Payments.

I guess eBay will make so much more money from sellers enrolled in Mangled Payments that they can afford to give away free listings and not feel a financial crunch.

Every time I read the news here I am happier that I left eBay for good five years ago.  And I am not a bit surprised that in those five years there has not been a single attempt to lure me back as a buyer or as a seller.

Then again, when I closed my store and shut eBay down, I told their exit survey that if they gave me a million dollars cash up front, I still would not return.

I find it interesting that most of the benefits are aimed at smaller sellers.  No real change for premium, anchor, and enterprise stores unless they sell in those limited categories.

Smaller sellers seem to have been the most vocally opposed/resistant to Managed Payments.  Looks to me like this is meant to be a little salve to try to smooth things over.

Glad to see good news for some sellers, but it would have been nice to see the benefits spread a little wider.

Sounds so good 10,000 free fixed price listings - EXCEPT. Yes Ebay is giving basic stores 10,000 free fixed price listings but the ten select categories are not very broad - Stamps, Toys & Hobbies only Card Games, Home & Garden only Party Supplies, Crafts. Just like giving ice away in winter.

I could be wrong, but with a premium store, unless your in certain categories, nothing changes. I dont need an anchor store (10,000). I need as of right now about 1200-1300 listings. But because of the price difference between the premium and anchor I wont bite. So listings will be below 1000 a month. For now it's better to use existing inventory and list on several platforms than carry more items / pay more for ebay listings.

So a basic stored that runs peanuts a month compared to an anchor store, is now going to get the same number of monthly free listings as an anchor store?  I  understand that it is in specific categories, but if I was paying all of that money for an anchor store and Ebay did that to me, I would find out the categories that are included in the extra free listings and immediately drop my anchor store down to a  basic store and sell in those categories almost exclusively.  I am banking that one of those categories is collectibles as Ebay seems to target that category over and over when trying to entice sellers to use free listings, especially the free auction listings that come with each store.  Another stupid move by Ebay which is beginning to show more and more often that no matter who they select as their CEO they do not understand what needs to happen at Ebay, or are being told by the BOD not to make those changes as they want to maximize the stock price so they can bail out with a profit instead of a loss and what Ebay needs would cost more money than they are willing to spend and more time than they probably have.

Passing out free listings and credits for signing up for Mangled Payments earlier than necessary just solidifies the notion that Ebay is not getting the conversion rate that Wenig had been touting with his my way or the highway rants.  Evidently more and more Sellers are taking the highway and selling on other sites rather than allow Ebay to have their banking information and to control their money.  It will not come close to putting them out of business but it will wind up having a big negative effect on their stock price when 3 rd quarter results are announced and Ebay is not coming close to the numbers that shareholders and Wall Street had been promised by Wenig.

if eBay were truly magnanimous, it would PAY sellers to list...not give away listings that cost them NOTHING.

So I see the categories now. Why toys and hobbies but only collectable card games? why not just toys and hobbies?

I'm happy to note that the select categories include collectibles.  Not that I can ever use 10,000 listings.

Looks like more money for ME for a change.  I usually have about 250 listings running, and ALL in Collectibles.  I used to have 600, but recently found I could do just as well with fewer. better listings, higher amounts, larger average sale.  I was just considering going to a Basic store, but now I could see it working with a Starter store.  $5 per month instead of $60.  Like it.

While it appears it won't help many sellers that have posted here, there are LOTS of sellers it will help.  It is kind of nice to see them go outside the the Fashion and collectible categories.  That is refreshing.

To me it doesn't seem like anything other than Ebay was paying attention to the categories that have sold well during this Pandemic.  Lots of people at home trying to find way to be entertained and not lose their minds.

I don't have a store.  I'm happy with auctions ONLY limit 50.  Ebay has been good about increasing the free limits to 100 and sometimes 200.  I don't ever again want to have a store.

We get 1,000 free listings a month here in the UK, free auto relists as well.
I hate new eBay announcements though!
If it is going to become unified globally, that reduction would hurt a lot of people, me included.

Obviously not enough people accepted their "invitation" (see FAQs above "We are INVITING more sellers to join managed payments every day").  It was more like threatening (to avoid disruption to your account you were "invited" to sign up by a particular time. hahah
I have no interest in listing high amounts of BIN which are now automatically renewed.  Imagine the headaches and time required when eBay decides to not offer that many free listings and you have to MANUALLY cancel thousands of listings or pay a fee when it renews??

This will change. Too easy to operate 2 or 3 free accounts and drop the store.
One poster here mentioned they need a store level at just below 2000 listings per month. That seems like a level one person can handle yet eBay seems to be unaware there needs to be a store level somewhere between 1000 and 10,000 per month.  Thanks for nothing with the categories given for the new free listings for stores. I don't want to sell thousands of baseball cards.

I love this website but one thing I can't stand is the people that are constantly bitching and complaining, then I read that they no longer sell on ebay, or they only list 25-50 items on ebay.  Please stop!  No one cares about your salty attitudes towards ebay. How do you actually expect to make any money selling 25-50 things on a website that has millions?

Anchor stores are not being left out of this according to ebays page.

Despite the July 15th cut off for being able to make new listings if you don't join MP - I know people who haven't joined MP and are still listing today. With the changes - after my vacation - I expect to let go of my stores and just list 200 on each account. Being sales are already non-existent on Ebay for me - I'll use their freebies and list elsewhere where sales are happening.
