eBay Pushes Sellers into Managed Payments Despite Pandemic

By: Ina Steiner

Despite the stress sellers are facing due to the coronavirus pandemic, eBay informed its sellers today that it will enroll them in its new Managed Payments program this year, and announced another phase in the rollout.

eBay sent an email giving sellers the "opportunity" to pre-register: "Once you pre-register, nothing will change in your selling routine. Starting Late July, your account will be activated for managed payments, and we will notify you as your activation date approaches."

A seller who forwarded EcommerceBytes the email she received wrote, "Please tell me this is a joke." The email began by addressing the timing of the announcement:

"We recognize COVID-19 and associated current events are creating unprecedented challenges for eBay’s sellers across the country, and your health and that of your business is our top priority. We’re monitoring the situation closely for our eBay community - our buyers, sellers and employees.

"In these extraordinary times, we want to support your business planning. As you may be aware, eBay continues to progressively enable sellers on managed payments in 2020, and has processed over $2B in payments already. Starting next month, we will be offering you an opportunity to pre-register your business for managed payments. Pre-registration allows you extra time to prepare your business, and for us to secure your enablement date as early as possible. Once you pre-register, nothing will change in your selling routine. Starting Late July, your account will be activated for managed payments, and we will notify you as your activation date approaches."

In a FAQs section of the email announcement under, "What will my rates be," eBay wrote the following:

"Information on fees and how they are calculated will be made available as part of the pre-registration process. Most sellers can expect to see savings compared to their current payments processing fees."

That's a lot of uncertainty to unload on sellers right now at a time when eBay isn't even able to offer phone support.

Let us know if you received the email (see more in today's Newsflash) and what struck you about the missive.

"Marie, you are fear mongering in your statement "To get that taken care of BEFORE the date you are due to be put into the program is PROACTIVE and will prevent any delays in your selling on Ebay."
There is nothing in that email that even mentions restrictions of any kind."

OK after I was able to pull myself off the floor from laughing so hard, I'm back and able to respond to this ridiculous opinion.

I try to give those interested correct information.  Certainly sometimes I fail and I get it wrong.  But none of my posts have ever pandered for "fear mongering".

Sorry I scared you so much.  Let's just go to the Ebay policy pages for some clarification.

From Ebay [link below]

eBay will manage payments for most sellers in 2020, and all sellers will eventually be required to have eBay manage their payments in order to keep selling on eBay. Sellers who have been identified as using eBay features and tools that are fully compatible with managed payments will be required to join in phases throughout this year.

Thank you for sharing that.  I hope it helps CanBrit and maybe others that I wasn't and you aren't "fear mongering" we are only trying to make sure correct information is out there so people can make an informed decision about what they want to do.

I think it's obvious that there are many sellers who will be shutting their stores down come July. I'm in managed payments on other venues and have no problem with them. Ayden is the payment processor for the one and we didn't have to submit all the information Ebay is requiring which bothers me - add to that I just don't trust Ebay as a site to be able to handle information given to them.

You are right Marie - I can't speak for everyone - but it's the tone that comes across and the way you say things that stir people up. Reminds me of the teacher's pet who always thought they were right and were protected. You are very knowledgeable when it comes to the rules and policies but you often fail to see what others do because you yourself aren't experiencing them or have had problems with Ebay that has resulted in their no longer trusting the site.

If you are the best voice eBay has against us terrible forum members, well we can see why it's going where it's going.

No Marie, I am not scared, not in the slightest. Not of you and certainly not eBay. That is where eBay is absolutely stupid. They can shut down my American account, sure, but they can't shut down my Canadian account which still has the following payment policy:

PayPal
PayPal Credit
Payment upon pickup
Bank-to-bank transfers (also known as bank wire transfers and bank cash transfers)
Checks
Money orders

Sure, they will come after other countries IF eBay still exists. It won't matter because my own website is only months away from launch. I also have other venues I sell on. My husband is a Canadian, I am American. We own homes in both places, banks in both places. We are retired and debt free.

In the same paragraph you state you want people to have the correct information and turn around and say that you (OMG) make mistakes sometimes. Next post to Froggy, "we are only trying to make sure correct information is out there so people can make an informed decision about what they want to do". The only true voice of eBay. Boy, you must have a lot of mirrors in your home.

I do hope you had a nice giggle but sorry girl, you're the one with egg on your face.

"If you are the best voice eBay has against us terrible forum members, well we can see why it's going where it's going."  Where'd that come from?  Ebay as a company has nothing to do with anything I post.

You said I was "fear mongering" for what I said about MP.  I gave you an excerpt straight from the Ebay policy and the link to the entire policy so you can see that what I said is what Ebay has publicly shared.  And if I didn't scare you, then why the comment?

"In the same paragraph you state you want people to have the correct information and turn around and say that you (OMG) make mistakes sometimes."  Yep I'm human, I make mistakes. That comment was from a different post to a different poster on a different subject, but yes I make mistakes.

But as to your concern over what I said about MP I was not wrong.  The policy I gave in my previous post states that and Froggy attested to their experience which is in line with that policy.

No egg here.

I know Jack. Usually I can contain my irritation but in this current climate I guess we're all a little touchy. eBay doesn't mean a darn thing considering everything people are facing. It just is awful when a company that abuses it's customers to the extent they do have the nerve to even mention Covid-19. Just makes bile rise up in my throat.

That was not what you and I were discussing at all.  I specifically addressed your concern you posed to me about "fear mongering".  You didn't like the answer because I was able to support what I said.  I can't help you with that.  It is Ebay's stated position, but because I shared that here on this blog regarding MP, it somehow concerned you as being a problem.

It is a FACT, not an opinion.  Ebay has said that is what they will do.  You clearly don't like that answer but it doesn't make it any less true.  So while you and Jack are getting irritated, I can't help that.  I'm not going to change what I said about this anymore than you are going to get Ebay to change their position on it.

Oh Marie. You missed the entire point. I was talking about what was in the email. This is what this topic is about. They did not mention at all in the email that there were possibly restrictions if you didn't do that.

I don't care what you read on eBay, we are talking about the email. Please tell me and everyone else, where in that email it states that there will be restrictions if you don't preregister?????

No I didn't miss anything that was said.  But I specifically addressed a portion of your post which was of an incorrect assumption by you about me and I gave you supporting info that supported what I said.

@ Marie @CanBrit. Its going to be so funny that those of you who think that ebay won't shut you down come July. Either cause you live in another country or you want to be a hard arse. We have been there and don't that already. So pardon me while I laugh at you guys who KNOW NOTHING ABOUT WHAT WILL HAPPEN AS YOU HAVEN'T BEEN THERE YET. It going to be an eyeopener when you realize you either sign up by July or start looking for another site to sell on. Good luck with that.

Don't include me in that statement as it was my post saying they would that started CanBrit to post their concerns that I was wrong.  I know you are right and I've said so a couple of times.  That has nothing to do with whether I'm currently in or out of MP.  The policy I posted is pretty clear and again reinforces what both you and I said previously.

I think I ran into a seller in Managed Payments this morning. I purchased two items at auction and paid for them. But I did not pay the seller, I paid Ebay, and now the payments are both pending in my Paypal account until Ebay processes them. So I imagine that is why the delay in getting money to the actual seller. Seriously, how will you as a seller ship items in one day that take two days or more for payment  to clear? I have never shipped an item until I was paid. Will we expected to ship the items before we see payment?

For the skeptics here is copy of the two emails I received this morning.  The first one is from someone who bought something from me.  "Instant payment received from [blank)."
Here is the second one where I paid for the item.  "You have authorized a payment to eBay"  So the seller did not get my instant payment nor did I get any information as to who the seller is?

What are the chance the Chinese sellers will be forced into Managed Payments to continue to sell on eBay?

While that was in my post, it comes from what Ebay has stated.  I did provide a link earlier in the thread.

The MP is currently for US sellers and they are starting to bring it to Germany too.  Beyond that, I don't know what their plans might be.

I thought Germany had fully been changed to MP?
I know UK business sellers will all be in managed payments by the end of 2020, eBay have said that.
I do not know about private sellers though; looks like 2021 for them maybe?

ebay is Jekyll and Hyde...it all depends on who answers the phone.
That being said, don't list anything unless you accept the probability that you might lose 100% of the value 1% of the time. Your mileage may vary.
ebay rents pixels. If you're a small-time seller, you are a number, not a customer. There is no concierge service on ebay for you.

It isn't that I don't think they'll shut me down, it's that I don't care if they do. I am already on two other sites plus building my own store. Come July I plan to be on holiday in our trailer for a month, IF covid-19 allows it. If we can't, we'll just move into the trailer and pretend we are.
