eBay Pushes Sellers into Managed Payments Despite Pandemic

By: Ina Steiner

Despite the stress sellers are facing due to the coronavirus pandemic, eBay informed its sellers today that it will enroll them in its new Managed Payments program this year, and announced another phase in the rollout.

eBay sent an email giving sellers the "opportunity" to pre-register: "Once you pre-register, nothing will change in your selling routine. Starting Late July, your account will be activated for managed payments, and we will notify you as your activation date approaches."

A seller who forwarded EcommerceBytes the email she received wrote, "Please tell me this is a joke." The email began by addressing the timing of the announcement:

"We recognize COVID-19 and associated current events are creating unprecedented challenges for eBay’s sellers across the country, and your health and that of your business is our top priority. We’re monitoring the situation closely for our eBay community - our buyers, sellers and employees.

"In these extraordinary times, we want to support your business planning. As you may be aware, eBay continues to progressively enable sellers on managed payments in 2020, and has processed over $2B in payments already. Starting next month, we will be offering you an opportunity to pre-register your business for managed payments. Pre-registration allows you extra time to prepare your business, and for us to secure your enablement date as early as possible. Once you pre-register, nothing will change in your selling routine. Starting Late July, your account will be activated for managed payments, and we will notify you as your activation date approaches."

In a FAQs section of the email announcement under, "What will my rates be," eBay wrote the following:

"Information on fees and how they are calculated will be made available as part of the pre-registration process. Most sellers can expect to see savings compared to their current payments processing fees."

That's a lot of uncertainty to unload on sellers right now at a time when eBay isn't even able to offer phone support.

Let us know if you received the email (see more in today's Newsflash) and what struck you about the missive.

There is something about our current conditions, outside of eBay's narcissistic ways, that makes me feel sicker than ever. To even mention Covid-19 in that email shows how completely the company lacks any kind of human decency, let alone soul.

When there are too much of members of this board sick and utterly tired of this  useless company,  you come out spewing your "I support eBay". You're a drone. Getoverit!

As for AnnG, you didn't even touch what they said they received from eBay.

The response: "...With regards to managed payments, its not automatic you have to pre-register."

Did you miss reading that point?  I may have gotten the email, but myself and thousands of others will give up this insult of an ecommerce site to the world in a second before I stay with them. They are the lowest of the lows and those who support them are even lower. Got it?

In this period of our crisis, my husband and I are trying to help those nearby who may not be able to get out. We have to buy our medications every two weeks. It's quite an endeavor when we are both immune compromised, while maybe not in the upper echelons of age. We take their orders and drop off what they need on the porches. They pay us through interac for the items.

This is reality for people today. That anybody should give a second thought to such a sick company, spewing sick messages is beyond me.

And if they had not have started off with a statement about Covid19, there would be complaints about that.  So to do or not to do would have gained the same results here.

The point of Pre Registering for MP in the email notification is a solid recommendation from Ebay.  There is a process to setting up a seller to be in MP.  To get that taken care of BEFORE the date you are due to be put into the program is PROACTIVE and will prevent any delays in your selling on Ebay.  I know some prefer to be reactive and will want to wait.  That is a decision for each of us to make for whatever is best for our business.  I will be proactive in my response to the email.

I don't know that 1,000's of members received the email.  I have no idea how many received it.

Ebay is likely to do away with that pesky 25 cent transaction fee in MP for each listing purchased and move to a flat 25 cent fee for the entire transaction.  At least that is what is being said in a couple different Town Hall [or some name] type meetings of recent.

So why haven't they done it yet? Seems like something one click of a button changes. If they haven't done it yet, and even ole Jordan Sweetcheeks said it was stupid, then they are not going to change it.

Do you honestly believe eBay would backtrack on their chance to get extra money from sellers? And no one cares if they mentioned doing so in a Town Hall because eBay lies all the time. Heck, where is the seller protection they've been promising for how many years? How many times has a seller been promised help with an issue which eBay never provides? I think most sellers wouldn't believe eBay if eBay stated that water is wet.

eBay DESPERATELY needs to show increased revenue this quarter OR ELSE. Thats ALL this is about.

Or else what? or else some unlucky eBay mafia cronie may loose his/her comfy do nothing job - and that cant happen - not in the San Jose mafia.

So time and plans march on. Covad-19, thermonuclear war, sellers leaving - what ever - as long as we can say to Wall Street "see our revenues ARE GROWING, even on the same sales - we are on the right track".

I think we've all gone 'round the bend discussing why MP is a pig in lipstick - and eBay will never back down (for many reasons)(none of them valid), so theres no point rehashing it atm.

eBay "has no choice" despite the Covad-19 issue - last quarter was %-8 ... this one CANT be worse!

This email (I got it too) was to soften the blow - it lets the eBay brass, eBay Cheerleaders say "we gave you PLENTY of time/warning before we implemented it".

There are some here who are just fine with what ever eBay does. They say they "dont like it", but not enough to "move them" to ever really be critical of the company. Nothing short of DW or JS running them over with their limo (probably) would ever cause them to take any of this SERIOUSLY.

They think we all sit around with nothing to do and just decide to bash eBay, when nothing is farther from the truth. PERSONALLY, Ive been screwed by eBay many times - thats where my animus comes from (and yes Tool - if there was a better place - Id be there (I am on Amazon but its not a perfect fit for many items for lots of reasons)). When eBay lies to you in your face, forces you to get a lawyer to undo the lies, lets other companies abuse you, lets buyers steal from you (and more) - yes - you have pent up anger against the worlds largest mafia.

That being said, its not hard (even if you arent mad at them) to see (with open eyes) when they are out to hurt you. MP was designed 1) to make them money 2) to hurt you, PERIOD.

Coke didnt make Cherry Coke to hurt me. I like it, I drink it, I thank them for creating it. I even got 3 t-shirts from mycokerewards. When it was NEW Coke and people said "we hate it", Coke listened and reverted back to the old formula.

Ford (or other vehicle maker), when they make a lemon and it hurts/kills people - they get sued. When they make GT40s and they are great, they get accolades - but they dont try to hurt their customers

eBay? they do what they want with impunity and (actually) the more sellers they hurt, the more glee they get from it.

Ever talk to them at a trade show? I did. The nasty, smug, self serving attitudes were beyond belief. My wife stood there with her mouth open and then after asked me "you actually do business with people like that?"

eBay will (sadly) continue its march towards MP - because it has to - because they have too much invested in it now, it makes too much money for them now, because they want the control over sellers now ..... covad-19, covad-20, covad-25 ... 'whatever" - nothing will stop eBays death march to MP... nothing will.

I have no idea.  I thought they should have done it a long time ago.  So I guess we will all just have to wait and see when they actually do it.  But I completely agree with you.  It could have and should have been done long ago.

@jack
Yes.  Late certainly, no doubt about that.

@industrystones
That has been address many times on this site over the years.  Often times because I make the choice to stay as informed as I can on Ebay rules, policies and procedures, some always think what you do.  I can't help you with that.  I just take my job as a seller seriously and I stay informed on the rules and regs that affect my job as a seller.  I know, sometimes it makes other uncomfortable because it gets in the way of their venting.

My apologies.  What I wrote to you was a bit out of line and I apologize for that.  Reading it back to myself it sounds like I'm really full of myself and I really am not.  But my choice of words could have been a whole lot better, so I apologize for that.  I don't apologize for staying as current on the rules as I can, but I absolutely apologize for the way that post comes across.  I was wrong for that.

There is one thing about staying current with the rules and another to blindly believe everything Ebay says when we know that they are far from transparent and have made decisions that were completely opposite from what they told us. We've all stayed informed - what we haven't done is put blind faith in a company that continues to not act equally to serve both it's sellers and buyers.

Virus free here and sales are strong. Sister Marie should get out the ruler and start slapping fingers on the keyboard for the obstinance she is facing with managed payments. Toolie is not leaning into the wind of managed payments but bending and slipping, still he thinks he can adapt. Totems both.

ebay is so vile and corrupt it is almost incomprehensible. Yet sellers need to make money. Many depend on it for their livelihood. There really isn't a viable alternative at this time so they stay and take it. A paradigm that didn't exist before the Internet. It is the online equivalent of a drug addiction.

That is another mistake some make here.  If I can explain a rule or policy they seem to think that means I agree with it but in reality all it means is that I can explain it.  And again, you can't speak for "everyone" here.  Clearly that is incorrect as some posters on subjects to do with Ebay don't even sell on Ebay by their own admission.  And they also don't keep up on the rules.  But then why would they, it would be a complete waste of their time as it doesn't affect them.

I don't understand why this section of the email is so easy for some to manipulate. It is actually perfectly clear. Let's take it one at a time shall we?

1. We will be offering you an opportunity to pre-register your business for managed payments.
Notice keywords. Offering Opportunity. Not demanding...not MUST.

2. Pre-registration allows you extra time to prepare your business, and for us to secure your enablement date as early as possible.
Keywords Secure your enablement date as early as possible. So if you don't preregister they can't secure a date.

3. Once you pre-register, Starting Late July, your account will be activated for managed payments.
Keywords Once you pre-register. There is nothing in that paragraph that says your account will be restricted in any way.

Marie, you are fear mongering in your statement "To get that taken care of BEFORE the date you are due to be put into the program is PROACTIVE and will prevent any delays in your selling on Ebay."
There is nothing in that email that even mentions restrictions of any kind.

Tool

1) winners dont use drugs
2) growing MJ is a crime (so is stealing from sellers ...)(looks like you have company theres)
3) "They sold Stub Hub and it's going to show on 1st Q earnings!" - its revenue from the sale NOT from their selling platform - DUH
4) Coke, Pepsi or RC - thats important ? (to you) - and Im sure not our only difference.
5) "(mic drop) " - you could have SOLD THAT MIC on eBay with the rest of your "tools" ... what a waste
6) "You like Ford, I like Chevrolet" - no i own a BMW 7 series (if you must know)
7) You live on the East Coast - not relevant to anything. NY & CA are both the most taxed states - same thing different weather
8) You're anti eBay - Im anti anything that hurts people for no reason. If you are PRO eBay - good luck - maybe its a reflection on who you are as a person. Even if its someone else that eBay hurts - it still bothers me.

Ok. Last year when they forced a bunch of us into MP they grabbed two of our stores. The first store we just pre registered. No big deal. Paypal has the same information. When it came time to be in MP we never noticed a difference. Business as usual. Now on the second story we decided to play hard ass and didn't pre register at all. They emailed us a few times and we just deleted it. Thinking we were smart. Then one morning Bam Store was no longer available. Ebay had stop everything. They told us to register or leave. Well we registerd and it took almost 2 weeks for them to verify every and allow us to access our store. Shortly afterwards we closed both stores trying to be a hard ass again. This go round they got us again. We aren't that stupid to play hard arse with them again. They have their hands on all the controls. Just pre registered.

So those of you who think you won't be put in. Guess again. But don't whine when Ebay shuts you down for a few weeks verifying your information.

It's OBVIOUS what kind of person you are.

It's also OBVIOUS what kind of person I am.

I would venture to say the ONLY things we have in common are we both sell on eBay and we both post on this forum.

Otherwise we are worlds apart. . .
