eBay Shares Shipping News including Weekend Cutoff Times

eBay shared some shipping news this week. Vice President of Seller Operations and Engagement Marni Levine said in a webcast, "We're launching weekend seller cutoff times. Previously the weekends were not included as part of your ship time. We are announcing that weekends are included. Because we all know you work pretty much 24/7, 365."

Levine didn't provide details, but eBay announced this feature in Australia on October 30 and in the UK on November 5th. The feature allows sellers the option of including Saturdays and Sundays as part of their working days and cut-off times for delivery. "Sellers will have more control over their delivery times on eBay, resulting in more accurate estimated delivery dates," eBay told Australian sellers.

And as eBay explained to UK sellers, they can set their "working" days to include Saturdays and Sundays and set cut-off times for each day of the week.

In the UK, the default cut-off time is 2 pm, Monday through Friday. "Saturday and Sunday are automatically considered non-working days unless you manually change this," and it told sellers to expect the new functionality to go live on November 13.

eBay Australia described three benefits of the program as follows:

- Sellers can provide more accurate handling time cut-offs leading to better delivery day estimates.

- Lower delivery day estimates (to be in line with reality) due to possibility of marking Saturday and Sunday as order processing days.

- This change takes into account that you may be processing orders on the weekend, but the last mile delivery by your carrier won't begin until the next business day (same for holidays).

In Monday's webcast, Levine said eBay would also announce holiday shipping cutoff dates this week. "Each year we tell you when is the last date you can almost guarantee delivery before holiday to your buyers." She also pitched eBay Labels platform for sellers to print shipping labels from the major carriers.

Let us know if the new weekend cutoff times feature will be helpful in providing accurate delivery estimates to buyers. Is this as good as it sounds?

Wow. "resulting in more accurate estimated delivery dates". Not when USPS is a mess. Now you understand why Amazon did what they did with shipping.

I am actually thinking about closing from the second week of Dec.- Jan 3. With the way USPS has been, and still is, I dont think I will be able to do Dec. If things get really crazy, and they may, I will literally be lucky to break even. I cant deal with the temporary lost shipments that show back up on radar 3-4 weeks later. You know, the ones you already either sent another shipment, or refunded payment. Those are bound to skyrocket in Dec. And of course to the customer it's always the sellers fault, even though you ship every single day, no matter what.

We have closed our stores on the Friday before Thanksgiving every year for the pass 6. This year will be no different. Buyers operate with no common sense after Thanksgiving and the Post Office is as impossible as ever. We stay closed until well into January. We also ignore all of greedbays so called wants and recommendations on shipping as we have ALWAYS had five business days to ship. Best part is we only ship on Mondays and Fridays. If Greedbay doesn't like that its fine with us cause we ain't changing for them.

I've found that the USPS has improved greatly in the past couple months over what it had been in the summer.  My problems were with items shipped in late July.  Some didn't reach their destinations until the beginning of September.

“”... Because we all know you work pretty much 24/7, 365."”

Go tell it to your MP team, Ms Levine. You know, the one that holds seller funds over the weekend, and tells sellers not to call them, etc.

As to their empty promise of more “control”, any bets on how long it is before someone reports eBay made one of their ‘changes’ to a seller’s selections under the guise of ‘enhancement’ for your own good?

One more note most sellers may not be aware of though (and even fewer buyers) - a significant portion of UPS (and even more Amazon) packages are delivered on Sundays now in the US, by the USPS.

Meanwhile the ‘guarantees’ that eBay keeps insisting upon are only estimates given by the USPS - a service that has not been immune to the same virus and ancillary impact related staffing shortages being experienced globally - while the current and not soon enough to be replaced administration has been cinching the funding handcuffs ever tighter.

And this is further exacerbated by the fact package volume has risen over 40% since March - without pause. Which means that even as the (believe it or not) on-time package delivery rate has been maintained at over 97%, the sheer numbers of those has risen accordingly.

Thus, so have the complaints. Whether valid, or in the case of eBay’s fraud enabling policies, not so much.

Take heart though, USPS hiring of temporary seasonal workers is underway. Those of you most vociferously complaining are free to apply - no experience necessary. Then again, about 4 in every 10 don’t last more than a week or so. It’s not exactly an easy gig apparently. They don’t get weekends off either.

I don't care what ebay thinks or says on the matter because they have NO PART in the service.
Policies from ebay are worth less than stuff I flush down the toilet.
Why would you even waste time coming up with delivery times when ALL CARRIERS do that already.  (better than you)
Oh, it's because all they know how to do is imitate other actions and not DO anything of substance.
How about removing the shipping fee?  It's not your money anyway!

If they wanted to correct the issue then they should take their grief with the USPS themselves.
But to do that, they would need some backbone.
Do they sell that on ebay, Marni.
If you find that out, then you have finally done SOMETHING.

I dont know, I would say the USPS is better than they were a few months back, but I am still having problems,...not as much, but still a few.  I can see it being a nightmare in Dec. They are not scanning all the time, still losing some shipments, and sometimes it takes an extra day for them to get to them in the local sort facility. Buyers are not reasonable. They want their stuff RIGHT AWAY. It's out of my control after I hand it over to the USPS. I just dont need the hassle.

Why is Sunday even in the discussion? Nobody ships on Sunday.
If you have Sunday sales, you ship Monday...just like the last 20 years.
If I have a Friday sale, I run the label with a note that it'll ship Saturday if my mailman has already passed. If not, I ship Friday with a note that "I'm shipping today".
Wish I got paid for thinking up useless "improvements".

eBay's thought processes literally go like this "If Amazon can do it....." and since Amazon does deliver on Sundays, well why not you sellers too?  Whassamatta?  Surely your family vans aren't being used on Sundays!

"We are announcing that weekends are included. Because we all know you work pretty much 24/7, 365."

GEE, THANKS! What a dumb statement.

Yes we do, sort of. But NOT so you can add another "shipping day" to the week. Ya see, someone has to do the work while Marni Levine and her peers collect their six figure salaries and bonuses.

I realize this is a setting that I can control. But really, if I can and choose to ship on Saturday, just let me do it. If I don't, then let me do that too. For me, to ship or not to ship really comes down to quantity. I am not going to twist my Saturday around for 1 package. Bring the traffic, we will get the packages out.

Don't even get me started on the endless down days we experience with the site. My estimate comes in at roughly 20 percent downtime every month.

How about adding a PAYOUT day. That would be something that recognizes the efforts of your sellers. We work 24/7 365, maybe we should see our money just as often?

Bunch of corporate dopes are exactly why I work for myself.

The idiot Marni thinks we all work for eBay.

WRONG

Gotta tell you - Tool is RIGHT about his thoughts - payouts (like Chase Zelle pay) can be 24/7/365 - but they arent .....

It would only be fair right?

My post office is closed Sun and they ONLY do packages (deliveries) then - not sure what they are thinking .....

A delivery estimate is about as helpful as a crystal ball.

Stop trying to estimate what you can't.

@I Must be Crazy

The Saturday and Sunday being included as business days may be optional now but it won't be for long as Ebay is still desperately trying to find a way that all of their sellers wind up having their deliveries arrive as fast or faster as Amazon Prime without putting any of their money or time into it.  This is just another way for Ebay to punish sellers who do not work on weekends like Ebay wants us to.  If Ebay had their way all Sellers would work 24/7/365 while they sit at Walkers West all day (M-F only of course)  laughing at what new policy they can come up with that will benefit Ebay but not cost them anything at all.  Ebay needs to stop creating new policies and program changes and fix what the garbage they keep putting out on their platform due to continuing to use low budget offshore programmers.

@ SIK

Good point.

It reminds me of the time Amazon just recently came up with that very same idea about a month or two ago.
Same old ebay, copy someone else's idea and try to force it on your sellers too.
Amazon can provide better deliveries because they INVESTED in their OWN DELIVERY TRUCKS.

All the imbeciles at ebay are like you said, sitting at walkers.
Marni probably went to the bartender and said,
''HHHEY YOU!  I GOTTA COM- COMP-LAINT!  SOMEONE JUST CRAPPED MY PANTS!''

If Sat and Sun become business days for all eBay sellers then I will change my handling time from 1 to 3 days, because I do NOT work 24/7/365, nor will I ever, not matter what eBay wishes for.
