eBay Hires Category Managers to Beef up Inventory

eBay is hiring category managers to recruit sellers in the UK to help beef up its selection of inventory, even as the company shuffles executives at corporate headquarters in San Jose, which you can read about in Friday's blog post.

An eBay manager posting on a career-networking site said eBay UK was hiring a "lot" of new category managers in the UK and pointed to a post on eBay's London jobs site.

Category managers might typically be seen as specialized support staff to help eBay sellers succeed, but from the job description, it appears they'll be focused on recruiting efforts to attract sellers - and sellers' offerings.

Under a section called, "The Opportunity," eBay UK explains contracted category managers will "define the category strategy and execute this through working with strategically important sellers, brands and retailers in your areas to ensure that eBay has the inventory to continue to grow this area."

And it continues, "As a Category Manager in the trading team, you will be accountable for both the operational and commercial success of the brand and retailer portfolio and the wider category."

Some of the key responsibilities of the job include the following:

- Lead and develop the relationship with key sellers, brands and retailers within the portfolio and in line with the category strategy

- Build range plans, target merchandise and use levers to get products on site to drive performance

- Build category and market expertise to identify and exploit opportunities for eBay

- Develop an excellent understanding of sellers' business operations and current strategies and utilise insight to find opportunities for growth

Job requirements include a "strong background of driving commercial results through business development and acquisition" along with the ability to "build partnerships and work in collaboration with others to meet shared objectives," as well as being "comfortable to engage at the most senior levels within brands and retailers."

Another requirement: "Background in the retail industry, ideally ecommerce." But oddly, eBay doesn't disclose the categories for which it's hiring - could managers with different category backgrounds be seen as interchangeable?

Interestingly, the positions are for contract workers on a 1-year term. You can find the full posting on this page of the eBay corporate website.

I would like to see category managers on the US eBay site that understand how buyers attempt to search for what they want. The most important descriptor in the Stamps category would be a catalog number. Nowhere does eBay support catalog numbers in Item Specifics for the Stamps category. Instead, required items specifics for Quality and Grade depend on non-standard abbreviations not used elsewhere in the philatelic marketplace. It is also unfortunate that eBay specifies abbreviations that cannot be matched to standard abbreviations or descriptive terms employed by most stamp dealers. Instead, eBay uses a pastiche of terms from the Coins category and abbreviations with non-standard punctuation.

Instead of going to authoritative sources like the Scott catalog, eBay appears to rely on coin experts or large sellers on the site who have horrible reputations on independent philatelic chat boards. One recommended eBay seller had lied about membership in the American Philatelic Society for years until confronted.

I don't understand how eBay can attempt to set a direction for marketplaces it knows nothing about, attempt to impose nonstandard terminology and take advice from disreputable sellers simply because they are large.

Sadly  for eBay they are now finally addressing a problem that began growing well over 10 years ago. Quality Seller's warned them they'd leave if the company kept up the abusive policies and they have. Today the site still has lots of content, but the overall quality has declined precipitously, eBay has become the site folks check last when seeking things online.

The company attitude was and has been for years..."as long as we provide the platform the complaining sellers will stay as they have few alternatives, we are it"  they were wrong of course.

The arrogance has cost them dearly and now have an incredibly tough uphill battle to bring back former sellers, and to get the ones still using the site to offer better quality items. The lack of trust now so deeply ingrained with tens of thousands of online businesses this will take years to mend.  It's too bad...which is why of course the company stock is now trading at about where it was in June of 2017...

cfrphoto, in other words, they have no idea what they are doing and should hire experts like you, but they want you to 'volunteer' your time to 'help them', pathetic.

plcombs, you are right, but it is too late for eBay executives to gain back sellers, this is why a new CEO is needed to sort through the corruption and put an end to it, we have moved inventory to Amazon as a result of Wenig's criminal folly.

eBay did all this to themselves with "here take the loss, its part of business - take one for eBay" garbage.

Theres no reason ANYONE should get ripped off, but when you have your thumb on the scale for the buyer - %99.99 of the time - eventually you run out of sellers to steal from.

I got a 30 day suspension on eBays boards by telling people that eBay acts as if they are the vampires in a castle up above, and when they get hungry - they swoop down and pick off a juicy cow - aka a seller. Not sure why it got their panties in a bunch (as Ive called them worse) but the analogy STILL holds.

The can go "BEEF" (wheres the BEEF1)(god bless Clara Peller) all they want - it wont change anything. Sellers wont commit their precious items with out some kind of protection (paging Griff, paging Griff, come in Griff) and assurances that eBay takes them seriously. I stopped selling anythin over $200 10yrs ago after eBay let some buyer in Germany steal a $300 photo cart from me.

Good luck to eBay and their fantasies,

eBay has enough 'stuff' and 'sellers' - they need more buyers, but good luck with that - anything that will help, may help.

@Purpleiris: "@CanBrit, sorry, English major here who can't help herself. LOL Levers is a noun (person, place or thing). A verb denotes an action. =)"

"Lever (s)" is both a noun and verb.

So , they want someone to show the sellers how to sell stuff on a platform that sells nothing ,and actively works against us doing so by hiding our listings ........
To be fair , Harry Potter hasn't got a lot on , now the films are finished, perhaps rescuing ebaY  could be HP's greatest conjuring trick, and the next film in the series

How are they going to garner more inventory with current policies that have sellers pulling inventory so they do not get fee churned by Temkin and Wenig's automated good til canceled fee churning script that Shenkel has never addressed?

In addition, sellers have options like popular apps Offerup.com and Letgo.ocm which have better technology than eBay where buyers can text message back and fourth.

eBay is way behind the curve, they will never get more inventory with their fee gouging policies and listing fees. New CEO can't be hired soon enough to clean out the stock option cash in criminals they have running the show now.

eBay Shill Buster writes: "[B]ut it is too late for eBay executives to gain back sellers,,,,,"

And that sums up eBay's core problem. When they started all the ridiculous policies, adding fees wherever they could, not to mention rarely siding with a seller in any dispute with a buyer, many good and honest sellers started to look elsewhere for a platform for their merchandise. Those sellers started up their own web site, or set up stores on other marketplaces, where they, happily, discovered there was life beyond eBay. I don't know how eBay expects to lure back sellers they've previously ostracized unless eBay does a major overhaul of their treatment of sellers.

" I don't know how eBay expects to lure back sellers they've previously ostracized unless eBay does a major overhaul of their treatment of sellers. "

How would you have any idea how they treat their sellers today? You don't sell on eBay.

You're running on hearsay! Not experience!

You hear a few people on a few forums complaining and you think that's how eBay is. . .Maybe for them but not for the masses.

I have no problem how eBay treats me as a seller.

And from how much money they bring in I'm far from being alone.

We'll see at the end of the month how eBay did in 2019. . . .

My bet is it did better then 2018

2020 is already in the bag for profits with the sale of Stubhub!

Tool, you missed your calling as a stand up comedy writer for sure.

eBay is doing so great they have to resort to fraud and fee churning to stay afloat, they just fired their CEO a few months ago and still have not hired a new one to replace the criminal they fired, they just inserted his partner in crime in as CEO who signed off on all the fraud and is now continuing the very same programs that are all flops.

Do you need a list: Seller Hub, Promoted Listings that have corrupted search, automated Good til canceled fee churning script that renews unsold listings without permission of sellers that is defrauding Billions in fees as the scam grows by the day, Donahoe's 10 tax on shipping charges that no seller makes a profit on but eBay does. There are many more frauds holding up the house of cards.

You must have purchased more eBay stock Tool.

toolguy writes (to me): "You hear a few people on a few forums complaining and you think that's how eBay is. . .Maybe for them but not for the masses."

I think you should reword that to: "Maybe for the masses, but not for me."

How many people who post here have closed their eBay stores? How many people have related their horrible experiences of being ripped off by liar buyers where eBay would do nothing? How many people have posted how their sales on Amazon (or another marketplace or their web site) are flourishing while their eBay sales are virtually non-existent? How many people have expressed dismay that they haven't had a sale in weeks? How many people have expressed their anger of not being able to find their own listings when doing a search using the word-for-word title of their products? Should I go on? And that's not hearsay; that's the firsthand experiences being discussed by the sellers. And if I may paraphrase Duke from The Isle of Dogs: People talk and I listen, always have.

Excellent comeback. May I add, I am not adding to all of my listings. I don't really care what happens. I've already expanded.

"I wonder if some of you understand eBay is experiencing a death rattle. It's so very sad. This would sell for at least $1500 on other sites. People are only on eBay to get the very saddest lowest priced items because some sellers are desperate, losing their homes, because eBay has messed up the site so badly in favor of China and India. I have no problems with China or India. Some of their people are my best friends and they also hate what's happening. BUT, this has to stop. Buy elsewhere. I will be soon selling elsewhere. I'm trying to educate, not denigrate. Love to you all."

The reason this latest skyrocket will fizzle is not necessarily because, in the big ‘yuuge’ macro eCom sphere (that unceremoniously ignores the likes of the comparatively micro volume specialists who are the bulk affected), the business development specialist per sector approach is inherently wrong. But that it - like so many of the past baker’s decade - is all they teach in MBA school.

Donohoe’s ‘trash’ though IS what was eBay’s soul, just reaching a kind of maturity when pruned. And it didn’t vibrate at the macro frequencies tuned in within the diploma labs, garage benches and burgeoning big boxes at the time. However, those who still have their niche flesh enough to cling to the carcass of the eBay still today chasing the dragon’s tail won’t benefit from anything like the true category specialist needed with a knowledge base of both the market and product such as evidenced by the previously posting philatelist for example. And that‘s just one category (with thousands of potential listers). eBay couldn’t hire enough to be meaningful.

No, they are chasing brands. Mass produced consumer food. And mass production is all about interchangeable parts. Maintaining the churn.
