Update on eBay Overbilling Glitch

By: Ina Steiner

eBay overcharged some sellers in a glitch related to how it tried to fix a problem with its Good Til Cancelled (GTC) mandate. The company has not published an announcement on the Seller Announcement Board nor on the Systems Announcement Board about this or other GTC-related glitches, but an eBay moderator acknowledged the over-billing on a discussion board on August 2nd as we previously reported

During yesterday's weekly chat session, a moderator provided an update on the problem. The eBay discussion board post follows:

I'd like to begin the chat with more information about the Good 'Til Cancelled fees that were incorrectly charged on some listings. The appropriate teams were engaged quickly, and the issue has been resolved. Any credits due to impacted sellers will automatically be completed by the end of this week. Since this will be automatically credited, Customer Service will no longer be able to credit these fees if you call in. Please let the automated process complete the credits by the end of this week.

As a reminder, Starting July 1, 2019, we changed the Good 'Til Cancelled renewal schedule from every 30 days to once per calendar month. The August renewal date for Good 'Til Cancelled listings is now based on the listing initial start date or last manual relist or sell similar date. For more details, be sure to review the Spring Seller Update.

That's not the only GTC-related glitch reported. Some sellers say they are getting their allotted Store listings removed incorrectly. See posts #46 and #54 in this thread on the eBay boards, for example. An eBay moderator had addressed the over-billing question posts #34 and 37, but didn't return to address the problem Store owners were having.

A seller who reported GTC billing glitches in July wrote to us again today to say a customer service rep told him that eBay was currently processing millions of accounts in batches in a process that would go on until September. He said the rep told him that the revised invoices would be rendered sometime in September for July invoice amount.

eBay's decision to change *all* fixed-price listings to automatically renew was a major policy shift that many sellers did not welcome, and the glitches related to the GTC mandate rollout only make things more difficult for sellers. As always, better communication would go a long way to helping sellers cope.

There is a reason Devin Wenig is saying nothing about a possible 500 million dollar plus billing error, he and other top eBay executives are selling stock so fast because they know the company is way overvalued based on the investments from Singer and Starboard.

Weing would not dare say anything on this billing fraud because he just sold 6 Million dollars worth of shares all while this billing fraud was taking place, nor will other top executives say anything about this mess because they are selling as fast as they can too.

That is why they will not make an announcement on this, that is exactly why they will not get back to you Ina.

Nice to see you back ShillBuster.

When you break down the core functions, from an application development standpoint, of eBay, it's amazing that A) they employ so many duhvelopers and B) those duhvelopers get it so wrong so often.

There is no way you can grow a business on eBay, first they do not have the traffic since Google cut them off years ago so you are wasting time paying for promoted listings on a marketplace with no eyeballs, second when you have to spend more time ending listings since you know you are going to get ripped off on automatic paid GTC relist fees sellers are wasting time and money on eBay.

So instead of listing new items daily sellers spend their time removing inventory from eBay. Wenig's schemes are killing eBay, the only way to reverse this trend of sellers ending listings is to end the policy of automatic relisting which is highly idiotic in the first place.

Maybe the only way eBay can end this policy is to terminate Devin Wenig who thinks all his dumb ideas are moving the marketplace forward, everything he has done at eBay is a massive failure, Seller Hub, Promoted Listings, eBay Payments, these are all flops no seller wants to deal with.

Speaking of overcharging. It looks like USPS's constant price increases aren't working.

U.S. Post Office Q3 net loss $2.26 bln vs. $1.49 bln a year ago.

When are companies going to learn that there is a line, a breaking point that customers have and will only take so much before the turn and run.

ebay, USPS, Etsy, US Govt, etc. They all think that the answer is price increases. Historically, that has proven to be a failure. Economics 101...You want to generate income. Put aside your endless greed and LOWER prices to give buyers MORE money to spend, not less.

Maybe USPS should hire Wenig. I'm sure he can think of 1000 more ways to screw the customers. Until there is no one left.

I resolved the GTC drama months ago - premium store - 1000 listings.  Now when I hit 900 I delete 100 more - first 100 to expire - I never go over my limit - I do not buy into any of those tricky promotions - so what was the end result for me on ebay? I end up with a minimum of 100 less items per month. I don''t care anymore - at least I knew I have 100 fresh new items per month and more and more I'm listing elsewhere - my website is doing ok - just ok - and I spend no money on advertising. It is what it is. And be careful about wishing DW away - in my 20 years there each and every new guy just made it worse.

@Whatever, so even though the team is losing you want to keep the manager who is not leading the team properly, in baseball they fire the manager who loses, at eBay they engage in more fraud and financial engineering to cook the books for Wall Street investors.

Donahoe never engaged in the amount of fraud that Wenig has invented with his never ending fee churning schemes, no one is buying the 'New Coke' the delusional man is selling, yet he keeps trying to force the same failed programs that sellers have rejected like Seller Hub, Promoted Listings and eBay payments along with this Good Til Canceled automated fee generation script that they can't even code properly.

All Donahoe did was rip off the seller universe for 10% on shipping across the board to book cook, without that money grab the Titanic would have sunk years ago because of massive GMV decreases that those fees have hidden for years.

Who trusts eBay that they will effectively refund everyone affected? I say the chances are near zero! They will make a huge mess of it like they do everything. Let's now wait for huge the wave of sellers saying that they HAVE NOT been refunded and even more of those that didn't know anything about this.

@thievesBay, I have 3 accounts with overbilling on them that were due to be processed to the bank on 8/1/2019 that eBay billing has never put through, those are bills for July with fraudulent fees on them, eBay is holding up those invoices until who knows when at this point.

So sellers are still in the dark about how much they owe eBay, you know that Devin does not want to go to jail over this fraud, if the invoices were actually charged to sellers accounts he would be guilty of Federal Charges in overbilling maybe 500 million dollars or so.

In the mean time eBay is dead and we will start ending hundreds of listings tomorrow once again, so until the next free promotion starts, sellers will be pulling millions of items of inventory off of eBay all over once again.

Devin Wenig's ideas and policies are working mass destruction on the eBay marketplace and eBay employees have no idea what to do because they can't even make statements for fear of getting fired, because all of the top executives are simply at eBay to sell their stock off, not to effectively and honestly run the company.

@eBay Shill Buster I believe eBay said that refunds would be processed to all affected by the end of the week. Not happening. eBay is so messed up there's no way for them to identify everyone. And it's probably still just those that have contacted customer service. They don't do complete corrections. Just more lies from eBay trying to get people off the scent for a few days until it blows over. Also get this, they said after these refunds are all processed automatically that customers won't be able to contact customer service anymore asking for refunds. eBay are pretty much and endless scam.

Another Ebay glitch that lines their pockets and if the Sellers do not catch it they have additional revenue for the 3rd quarter.  But even overbilling Sellers for non existent charges is not an original idea.  He learned that one from his buddy over at Etsy,. where they evidently still have not finished repaying all sellers from what I have heard.  Nothing like an interest free loan from your Sellers to help stem the continuing reduction of cash due to overspending by Wenig.

"I believe eBay said that refunds would be processed to all affected by the end of the week."

You are mistaken, eBay has stated it could take as long as the middle of Sept. to process all the refunds. . . .

@Silver Ice King

As of June 29th eBay had $4.48 Billion in cash

Why would eBay need a seller loan?

@Toolguy

Because it was $9.5 Billion  a couple of years ago, but Wenig keeps blowing the money on all of his useless ideas, like Seller Hub and all of the Stock buybacks that Ebay has been doing to try and keep the price propped up.  As I remember, Ebay had around $6.5 Billion budgeted for Stock repurchases this fiscal year and $4.5 Billion (if that is what they still have) won't cut it.  The reduction in sales that Ebay has admitted having so far this year also will not supply the necessary cash, but a nice half a billion dollar over billing of Sellers is a nice way to help finance these plans.  Wenig still seems to think that all Sellers on Ebay are brainless and that he can get away with anything he wants to try.

Funny though how when Ebay under billed Sellers for FVF they were able to fix the errors and have the revised invoices out in a couple of days so that they didn't miss a beat.  But when its a big over billing of Sellers, now it may take up to a month and a half to fix and refund the money?  Is Ebay going to pay interest on this $500 Million Loan from its Sellers? Or is it going to be another one of his rip off of Sellers?  I am sure that Wenig never thought he would get caught and Ebay would suddenly show a huge growth spurt and he would say that the GTC change was a great idea that paid off handsomely.

Cash
Apple 256b
Microsoft 126b
Google 92b
Facebook 48.5b
Alibaba 31.5b
Amazon 22b
Walmart 7.7b
Twitter 6.2b
ebay 4.5b Woop Woop!

If you're as large as ebay and cant even out-cash the likes of Twitter, that is pretty darn bad. Heck they just showed a profit for the first time last year and managed to save 6.2b. And Alibaba (closest thing to ebay) is killing ebay with a GMV 500% higher in addition to having 600% more cash.. 4.5b only shows what a dismal failure ebay is year over year.

@toolguy No, you are incorrect. Did you bother to READ this article which quotes from an eBay moderator on the board? Of course not, you don't read. It twice says THIS WEEK.

@toolguy eBay burns all their cash on Buybacks and doesn't use it to improve the marketplace or workforce. Looking short term as always trying to pump the stock. That's the reason for everything eBay says or does. Long term that's a recipe for failure. eBay is already well on their way to failure.

If Wenig was not cowering under his desk you guys would not need to be arguing about a date, he nor his right hand man Temkin, the Keystone Cops who came up with this automated fee churning Good Til Canceled script should make a statement.

This has been going on nearly a month and sellers are still in the dark, but that is the way Devin wants it so he can cash out his stock, say nothing lest the press picks up on this.
