eBay CEO Devin Wenig Discusses the Future of Business

eBay CEO Devin Wenig has been working to raise his profile of late. He published an essay in Fortune in July on "Why We Should Teach All Students to Code," and last week, he participated in CNBC's feature, "The Future of Business."

The feature included a Q&A. Some revelations: he is a big fan of social media, and his favorite apps are eBay, Headspace (a meditation app), and news sites. He uses Apple IOS Messenger to communicate with friends, family, and coworkers.

CNBC also published video snippets, and one of the more interesting is one where Wenig shares his thoughts about advertising. He said advertising is fading into the background and said people don't want intrusive ads.

"I think people don't feel comfortable when their data is used to target them with advertising that they don't want."

"Advertising is moving from this third-party pop-up, intrusive environment to something that's more native and seamless," he said; "five years from now, advertising will look very, very different than it does today."

His thoughts on advertising are particularly relevant given eBay's own focus on growing its ad revenue by pushing sellers to advertise their listings beyond the insertion fees they pay. While eBay Promoted Listings are not in the form of the dreaded pop-ups Wenig abhors, some users are complaining that sponsored listings in search results are harming the shopping experience.

When asked about cryptocurrency, Wenig said he was not a fan of today's crypto because of its volatility but said, "I'm a believer that crypto could play a meaningful role alongside fiat currencies."

He also said eBay was "exploring and experimenting with a lot of different things."

"I think that if we found the vehicle where we believe that we can create stability and a currency that people would value, we could move $100 billion of eBay's business in that direction. We're not quite there yet. But I'm an advocate of cryptocurrency. And I'm a believer that it will play a role in the global economy as we go forward."

Cryptocurrency is getting more attention since Facebook announced its Libra initiative.

Wenig also answered questions about data's effect on ecommerce; the on-demand economy; sustainable shopping; the evolving concept of ownership; and the future of cross-border commerce.

Devin is not a moral guy. Hes a wannabe corporate raider. I think he takes joy in smashing mom and pop businesses, even when it loses them money. They just pull revenue temporarily from other streams and cook those books Id bet. I think I hate this guy more than anyone on the planet right now and thats pretty hard. Meditate app my arse.

Watch the next few years when he can sell his shares off. Do you remember when talented people got rich off of good ideas vs race to the bottom raider capitalism? Its been a while. Guys like him are the opposite of elite.

"eBay CEO Devin Wenig has been working to raise his profile of late..."

Wenig's jetting about in the eBay corporate-jet-cum-Uber, posing for selfies with state dignitaries, having essays penned for finance mags, ramping-up the interview circuit, and speaking awkwardly about blockchain ("THE blockchain") and Cyrpto ("..blah blah FIAT CURRENCY blah blah...).

And why?

Well because StubHub is about to find a new home, and with any luck the classifieds group to follow not too much longer afterwards.

Wenig was actually quite fortunate to have Elliott come along and provide him with a strat plan of what needs to be done - he clearly had no *#%$ing clue.

The new eBay Marketplace (sans StubHub & Classifieds) is going to need a non-Wenig CEO, so Wenig is going to jettison a-la Donahoe with his massive golden parachute tucked safely in his offshore accounts, and move on to other things (or maybe take a year to 'find himself').

This media blitz and fluffer routine of his making extra-special nicey-nice with MSNBC and Business Insider (and of course many others), is all part of his self-orchestrated ceremonial pomp in order to 'promote his own listing' for better black-book retained executive search firms to net his next cushy deal to further display his incompetence whilst being significantly overpaid.

Well, that's what we hope, anyways.

Fingers crossed!

Wenig sure said a whole lotta nuttin in that interview. About the only thing he managed to accomplish with it was to make himself look even more ignorant than he already does.

"Wenig is a pathological liar and a hypocrite to boot."

Was he reading from a teleprompter?

Devin is dumping out his delusions on Wall Street investors and trying to act like a business leader which he is not, he is selling a delusion to investors is all making a highly false proposition that eBay could dump 100 Billion dollars in business to crypto.

Ebay does not even do 100 Billion dollars with real currency now.

He is talking this trash like he talks eBay payments lunacy, that is going to break millions of small sellers on eBay.

Once the Federal Government smashes the advantages Bitcoin had which was privacy and tax avoidance few will even trade it down the road as it will be outlawed.

But Devin can keep talking because talk is cheap and that is all the man has left, eBay is heading toward total destruction under Wenig and he has to be fired and replaced with a software engineer.

Wenig's ideas for growth for eBay is to clone Amazon, that is not innovation, but he thinks since Amazon market cap is one of the largest in the world that the Amazon model will lift eBay also which is false. In business you have to innovated, trying to copy someone who is better than you in all aspects of the craft leads to failure, that is like trying to compare the Monkies to Led Zeppelin.

The only reason students should learn to code is to be able to write their own software once all of the commercial options are completely ruined.  We're quickly approaching that day between the H1Bs and rental licenses.

I had to laugh at an article I read on LinkedIn today about using blockchain for hiring.  Good Lord, this the the fight I have at my day job.  If you don't track the right metrics, or have good data, or understand what they say, you can throw blockchains, clouds, ITIL, anything you want at it and not get anywhere.

He fails to recognize that sellers are sick and tired of selling on eBay. eBay is NOT THE ONLY GAME IN TOWN.

"...hope the board pressures him..."

The 'board' chooses to remain as willfully ignorant of the bilge processes as 'Cap'n Dev' does.  Free drinks, don'tcha know.
